Scales are not linear.. zigzag.. even if we maintain calorie deficit consistently.. due to harmones.. muscle gain.. water retention

So lets say the fix up your daily calorie requirement as 1800 cals.. so when u logg ur exercise with 500 calories burn.. it will automatically adjust your intake level for that day to 2300 cals. Is it clear now

See when they ask your profile, u have to ignore your exercise routine. Apart from that if u are doing 12000 steps then write very active lifestyle :) Understand the purpose of asking: It is aimed at fixing up the calories intake allowed any day, when u dont do any exercise.

Ya still u cant say study is incorrect.. it might be based on general theory and exceptions are there.. Lets say for example I find very easy to skip breakfast despite of 5 km run.. while my wife start fainting if she doesnt eat till 10 am..
