  • So much joys comes from metal + working out. Favourites have consistently been: Devin Townsend Project Strapping Young Lad Opeth Meshuggah Maiden O.S.I. Ozzy
  • Maybe in the interim, try reading up on running form and posture. You might be able to reduce the knee soreness. A common tweak that yields less knee pain is not leaning forward too far when you run. Warm ups, post-run knee specific stretches and using a foam roller also can help. Let us know how you do on your Spartan.…
  • That was my biggest concern as well. 9 feet walls are hard to jump over if you've never done it before. Fortunately there are steps on the far sides of the wall (support beams). And, if you have trouble, someone usually lends a hand to help you up and over. If that doesn't work, practice your burpees ;)
  • Anytime! The Spartan race's are a fantastic way to ignite your passion for running (if you enjoy this type of race).
  • Like many others, I only run outside. And for whatever weather amusement value it's worth, I live in Canada. Learning how to run in any weather from +40C to -40C takes time of day experimentation and layered clothing choices. On the latter, basic core layer wicking fabrics are good choices all year round, which are pretty…
  • First off, right on for signing up for a Spartan Race! I’ve completed a number of them over the past 4 years and it’s truly an incredible experience that’ll put a big (muddy) smile on your face. My advice comes from having just recently completed the Trifecta: Beast (25km), Super (10km) and Sprint (5km). Some general…
  • Born to Run is awesome and I found myself quickly caught-up in the advantages of the minimal shoe buzz. There are, however, a few small disadvantages that are commonly brought up: - little detailed info is given about body type/shape in relation to barefoot/minimal running benefits (slight emphasis on benefits accrued by…
  • Sounds like you've found the perfect pair of running shoes for the terrain and distances you enjoy. Right on. I agree: running shoe advice = personal preference running shoe choice = personal preference heel drop = personal preference running surface comfort = personal preference
  • Have you tried any of the shoe finder tools to inform your selection choices? Try this one: http://www.shop.runningroom.com/ (you have to click the button on the 3rd tab down that's above the scrolling images)
  • Not to be rude to the quoted poster, but be VERY careful with exploring minimalist shoes. This warning comes from the advice of my chiropracter and person experience. This is a debated issue, so interpret it as you wish. If you are running on UNNATURAL surfaces (i.e., pavement, concrete, track rubber) regular running shoes…
  • Right on! The Spartan races are a fabulous way to keep yourself motivated -- it's a well deserved finisher's medal :)
  • Here's my prescriptive and really simplified $0.02: unless an injury is coming on, your body is dumb and can deal with the soreness (or stiffness). Your issue sounds like you're going through a case of negative self-talk. As per your above quote, you used the words "kinda dread" and "don't know if I will be able...". Not…
  • Another contributing factor could be environmental -- the weather. Summer running, for instance, slows me down by 10% at least. Running in the Fall and the Winter, on the other hand, is where I've logged my fastest times.
  • Same story as you circa April 2011. Have since progressed to running 2 half marathons and a full-marathon in the span of 1 year. First step, as you will hear over and over, get fitted properly. If you have something like a Running Room (Canada), it's worth checking it out. Second step, get some motivation. If you need help…
  • Work out for 30 days and then look for a difference :) Not every few days.
  • Others have said it -- your outlook (based on the way you respond) reads as the real issue here. It started with your thread title. Why couldn't it have been "How do I learn how to enjoy exercise and healthy eating?" So start with positives, rather than the "I hate XY&Z" thinking.
