  • Mine survived 10 mins in the washing machine last night!
  • Looks pretty good to me. Only things I'd suggest that help me are cutting the sugar in tea/coffee (but take it gradually so as not to notice) and that fizzy drinks tend to make me crave other sweet stuff which does add the calories.
  • Gosh, other side of the world - south west England!
  • vouchercodes.co.uk is pretty good. The tricky bit is not being persuaded into buying stuff you didn't really need in the first place. And remember the supermarkets have a higher margin on junkfood, so they're more likely to be reduced/bogof etc than healthy stuff.
  • Welcome! 30lb is a pretty good start, so congratulations on that first of all! With a bit of luck unloading your hip will ease your symptoms a bit too! I've only just started using the site too, but finding it very useful so far. Where are you based? Jen ps feel free to add me
  • Yes. A heavier person, say 30lb overweight, is carrying that extra weight as they walk, so the "equivalent" for the one at target is carrying a backpack... However, if the "in shape" person has more muscle mass, their BMR will be proportionally higher than it would if not, too, so not quite that straightforward.
  • Your BMR is the absolute minimum your body uses to do things like breathing and keeping your heart beating. All movement needs more energy on top of this, so your actual calorie requirements for the day is significantly more than your BMR.

  • You probably are adding muscle. You're right that it does weigh more than fat, think the difference in size between a pound of lean steak and a pound of butter. It metabolises more quickly too though, so you will start burning calories quicker, even at rest. If everything else is going the right way (it sounds like it is)…
  • Fried macaroni cheese actually sounds foul, especially on a burger. Maybe I've turned a corner with the dieting thing? Could you claim vegetarianism/dairy intolerance/come clean to your boss about the slimming?
  • To a degree it would help to infuence me definately, but not be the only thing I look at. The cafe at my gym does this for their "diet" foods, but not the rest of the menu - would make more sense to me if they did the lot!
  • BMI isn't the be all and end all that it gets touted as, true, but it can be a handy tool for getting a "ball park" of your proportions, and doesn't need to be used in isolation - I find using it in conjunction with body fat% and dress size works pretty well in monitoring ^trends^

  • Could you get a couple of pots and grow your own? Herbs are pretty easy to start with, I've also got going with tomatoes, peppers and chillis this year. Mum has a pick-and-come-again type lettuce planter. I have no outdoor space, and little time, it really is easy. Agree about the frozen veggies, but also do things like…

  • Things like thyroid problems can affect your metabolism, and muscle and fat have different metabolic rates, so yes there will be a variation dependant on things like body fat % I agree there's a lot of misreporting though - why being able to write everything down works so well
  • I'm in Bristol
  • I know what you mean - people always seem to think I'm about 3 stone lighter than I am (would put me roughly where I want to be) so don't get why I still want to lose so much weight! Last time I weiged what I weigh now I was 3 dress sizes bigger, too (and some old stuff kept, so not just new lines being made bigger! I…
  • Not a huge fan of DVDs tbh. I always like the idea, but never really use them much. I find booking into a class (whether BMF, circuits, Body Attack, dance, whatever) is far better for me to actually get off my backside and Do Something. I have had reasonable success with a very old LP done by Felicity Kendall bought in the…
