  • don't look back!
  • i also advocate natural sweeteners. chemicals are not worthwhile.
  • real food = real taste and real nutrition
  • if you haven't already, try making the switch from "diet" products that contain artificial sweeteners, to fitting small quantities of real sugar into your diet. it took off the last five for me.

  • give yourself a day off every week, as recommended by the Body for Life program. it keeps your metabolism from adjusting to a lower-calorie diet, and gives you the motivation for the other six days of careful eating. works for me!
  • try chilled soups! you do have to turn on the stove, but you can make a huge vat once a week and spend the rest of the week having delicious chilled dinners.
  • you can change your tradition to what my mom did -- see if you can make your halloween candy last until next halloween. we were champion trick-or-treaters, so we got to eat a good amount that night, but after that, we could have about a piece a day and just about draw it out to next halloween :) i also noticed that my…
  • when i worked at Starbucks people would order giant frappuccinos with whipped cream for their children. some of them have more than 2,000 calories each! apart from the fact that they were giving espresso to small children, many of the children were already overweight. it's difficult to see people making bad decisions for…

  • it's not ideal to eat before going to bed, but if you're within your cals and it doesn't happen often, i don't think it will hurt. i think it's better to be in the habit of regularly eating your calories - not more not less - than to let a late night break up your plan.
  • be aware that losing your period can also be an indication that you have lost too much weight, or too much too fast. if your body thinks it's not healthy enough to be fertile, then it could be telling you that you are putting way too much stress on it.
  • red, orange, and yellow peppers, sauteed in a pan for a LONG time in lots of olive oil. or just raw. best vegetable EVER.
  • i go over once a week. on purpose. for two reasons: 1) i read in Eating for Life that this prevents your body from adjusting to a low calorie intake by metabolizing slower 2) i can put off sweets the rest of the week knowing that I can go over on Tuesdays, and when I go WAY over, i don't have to "get back on track" since…
  • you're at a healthy weight for OUR height. congratulations! sounds like you are doing all the right things to keep it off.
  • Sit down and make a list of rewards. A lot of time, food is a substitute because we think we don't have the time for other pleasures. But at the end of a long day, you deserve to take the time and do something truly enjoyable. Even if at first you think of them as consolation prizes when compared to chocolate and lounging,…
  • i think part of the reason it's harder to run outside is because your body fatigues from impact as well as from burning calories. i'll take just the burn and leave the impact by sticking the the elliptical!
  • try actually comparing the two things at the moment you make the decision: do i want the milkshake more? or do i want me minus five pounds more? if you stop to think every time, you'll make the right call. plus, you can always settle for a good fruit smoothie and you minus three pounds...compromise has been my good friend…
  • Girl, it's almost summer, so instead of pressuring yourself, get motivated with something fun! If you're 55 lbs down, you know you will be looking better in that bathing suit than you did last year, so relish the thought. Get a new suit. Be like the yogurt commercial and hang it in your kitchen. Get pumped about your…
  • i am the same height, and i have had to listen to my body to figure out the right weight for me. if i stay on course with a healthy diet (not restricted, just leaving out the sweets), my body stays just around 127. i have found that when i force myself to go lower than that, i end up binging, or having to obsess about…
  • DON'T QUIT!! you said you are working out far more than before, which means you are swapping fat for muscle. it's not a cop-out to say that muscle weighs more than fat - it's true! i have sometimes lost sizes and gained pounds. so don't worry. there is nothing wrong with you. stick to what you're doing, and you really will…
  • meet yourself halfway. incorporate some less lethal sweets into your healthy eating. i am always tempted to go for one extreme or the other -- all healthy, or all crappy. but i strike the best balance when i let them blend a little with substitutes for sweets like dark chocolate, light ice cream, italian ice, whole wheat…
  • Good luck, you guys. Whatever that is, it sounds terrible. I hope you all succeed.
  • Good luck with your new lease on life!
  • i'm not a parent, but my parents did a great job with all my siblings, and i had to handle many of the same attitude issues as a high school teacher. your daughter probably didn't come up with this act on her own; friends, schoolmates, and characters in movies and on tv all give the impression that it's ok to behave that…
  • as a high school teacher, i was DEFINITELY at least lightly active. in fact, i would put the next level up. i spent all day walking back and forth, gesturing (probably wildly, since i love history and english), writing on the board, running up and down the halls to the copier. i know it was exercise because when i began…
  • about 300 is good, especially because those aren't wasted calories -- they start your metabolism and allow your body to pace itself until your next meals. try using Aunt Millie's light wheat bread, or another light whole wheat bread to replace the one your using now. usually they are about 35-40 calories per slice, so you…
  • I have become a big believer in breakfast. Eating it puts your stomach at a healthy pace for the rest of the day. I have four favorites that are all 300 calories or less, and keep me full for a long time (if you work out early in the morning, eat after working out): 1) plain nonfat yogurt, a handful of almonds, and…
  • thanks!
  • thanks!
  • I like a little something sweet in the evening. Jell-o sugar free fat free puddings are a great option, and they have flavors that can be mixed with different things to make a wide array of low-calorie desserts. For example, the vanilla cheesecake flavor with some crumbled Nilla wafers tastes just like cheesecake, and you…
  • ditch the scale for a few days, but stick with healthy habits. then you will get to know all the other rewards: the way your clothes fit, the way your body feels. these are even better than watching the number go down. i weigh in once in a while, but weight loss is a simple calculus: calories in, calories out. as long as…
