I think that they can be a bit off due to a variety of factors, but if it helps you get active then it is a good thing. We all have to find our own way to be healthier in our daily lives. you need carbs too just not a whole lot and mostly whole grains. I try to get more to eat more protein because you are right it does take more protein to build muscle. I don't eat my exercise calories I just tally them up because I'm not sure I have the numbers set right. I have been eating at my bmr for the past month.
