  • I carry unsalted mixed nuts in a snack baggie in my purse at all times. They are substantial and don't need refrigeration. You can usually find them at most convenience stores too.
  • Congratulations!!
  • I don't know. I have seasonal allergies (grass) from May - July. I haven't noticed a change in my numbers, but then again I'm medicated  I know that fighting a cold can increase your glucose levels though, so it seems possible.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! This really helps me not feel discouraged when faced with only fast food options.
  • My rewards are linked to (and paid for by) my exercise goals. I get money back from my health plan when I log visits to the gym, and then use that to save toward things outside my monthly budget, like a new pair of shoes, work-out clothes, or things related to my hobbies, like yarn, quilting fabric, the latest book in a…
  • Here's one recipe that our whole family eats: Zucchini Pancakes http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Zucchini-Patties-with-Feta-238266. It's the third or fourth summer we've had these and I'm delighted that they are still on the menu after T2 diagnosis. Like potato pancakes, serve with sour cream (me) or applesauce…
  • Congrats!
  • Congratulations!

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I have tried the shiritake noodles (available at my local chain/Kroger & Safeway near the tofu) and they are fine, but the texture doesn't go over well with the family. I've also tried the "lower carb" pastas and have had some success with those. My general strategy is to just eat less of the…
  • Yes! My initial a1c was over 12 and after 4 months down to 5.4 through low carb eating, increased exercise and metformin. It can be done, but everyone is unique and takes their own path to living healthy.
  • I'll throw in a quick recommendation because I have found that the glycemic index/load matters for me. The type of oatmeaI matters less than what I eat it with, so I combine it with fat/protein. I've had some success with baked oatmeal, both for not spiking BG and still tasting good. There are lots of recipes out there,…
  • Congratulations!
  • I also had a difficult time getting enough calories when I first cut out a lot of my usual carbs. similar to previous post I snack on: Fage 2% greek yogurt dark chocolate mixed nuts jalapeno string cheese or sharp cheddar KIND bars (only the "nuts" ones) - when I need a sweet treat on the go sliced apple & peanut butter…
  • Same here! I'm so pleased that Ghirarelli makes these individually wrapped squares. In addition to the 72% you mention, I also like their "Midnight Reverie" which is 86% cacao, 4g carb and only 1 g sugar.
  • Congratulations! You should be very pleased. Good luck with your surgery.
  • I don't know. I'm only 6 months since diagnosis. I have no family history of diabetes, but do have a family history of obesity. My extra weight around the middle, put on steadily (and post-pregnancy) at about a pound a year through my 30s, still put me at the upper end of normal. I ate very healthy, but not stringently for…
  • Congratulations & good work!
  • Congratulations! That's great motivation to keep up the good work.
  • Hair loss (along with weight loss) when I was eating nutritionally and healthily and trying to maintain my weight was a symptom that led to my unexpected diagnosis of high blood sugar and Type 2 diabetes. My body was no longer getting nutrients from my food. Like other posters mention, if you aren't eating enough calories…
  • I love baking, and the T2 diagnosis has put the brakes on that for the most part. But I am slowly exploring low-carb baking and have found a few recipes that satisfy that craving while keeping to the plan. Low calorie they are not, and expensive ingredients, but a good indulgence. I have a 9yr old son, and I'll ask for a…
  • Thank you for the feedback! I suspect meeting with a nutritionist and testing my blood sugar for response to specific foods will happen after I get my next bloodwork done in mid-November. This is all brand new for me, and I'm trying to make gradual, sustainable changes. I'll call my internist with the "how much fat is…
