If you're worried about the calories, you can get Nuun hydration tablets. Also, check your logs to see how much salt you're getting per day. They limit it to 2500 mg, which is generally good, but if your hair is wet at the end of your work-out, along with your clothes, you probably need a little more. I have found that if…

Thanks, guys! I have been working with balancing. Unlike some, I really have to eat before working out, or my body complains a lot at me. Still, I usually start relatively modest and then sit there at the end of the day,, thinking, Wow! so many calories under and so little time! I really don't want to eat junk food, but…

Interesting posts. Here's my addition: 1. Studies have shown that people who eat just one meal a day tend to be fatter than those who eat more. (just had to get that out of the way) 2. Different levels of exercise burn different types of fuel preferentially. If you are exercising at Phil Maffetone's MAF level and going for…

Feel free to add me, both of you. I have reached my goal, but the hard part is the next bit--keeping from backsliding. I need help with that and will gladly help support other people here.

Thanks, folks! I've actually got a relatively new strap and a pretty new battery in it, so I don't think it's that. In retrospect, I realized I'd carefully rinsed off the strap after using it Sunday, so there was almost no salt on it when I just wet it with water. I checked out amazon to look for HRM gels, and reading the…

Look out for the sugar alcohols, though. if they're high protein and low effective carbs, they often have sugar alcohols in and it can give you killer gas.

I just ditched all of mine due to what happens with the teflon compounds as the pan ages. My new steel pans are working fine. Also, dropping fat intake too low tends to drop HDL cholesterol, which isn't good for long-term cardiac health. I usually add a little olive oil to the pan when cooking.

myfitnesspal has casual walking listed, but the best way I've found to add that to my diary is with my fitbit.

I found it got a whole lot better when I dropped the gluten/starch stuff and continued with exuberant metamucil use (I take it 3 times a day). You may be missing the caffeine. Maybe some green tea?

I found it started shrinking faster when I ditched the gluten and DIDN'T substitute in some other grainy starch. I primarily eat fruits and vegetables. It also seems a little tighter since I started running, but you can't spot reduce fat by working the surrounding muscle. I think it was more that the loose bits got tighter…

How are you calculating this calorie burn? I work pretty hard at exercising myself, and rarely get that high. Sometimes the burn levels in myfitnesspal are, shall we say, a little over-enthusiastic? If you're really certain about the burn, you should eat back some of the calories, though maybe not all. Otherwise, you'll…

Here's the program I instituted at the start of the year: 1. Weigh myself everyday, and post the weight to my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and daughter, as well as tell my husband. Keeps you focused. 2. Use myfitnesspal to write down EVERYTHING I eat, the good, the bad and the downright ugly. 3. I love to eat more than I…

Already sent you the request you requested! I'm a bit older, and am already at goal (more or less), down around 17 pounds. Any lower and I'd get all wrinkly. However, I am willing to give support and meet new folks!

It's normal and exciting initially. Usually it's due to shifting water. You are likely eating less salt and carbohydrates given the healthier foods, plus you're washing the salt you do take in out with the extra water. The biggest problem is that people get really excited and think the pound a day loss will go on for the…

I have used a Jawbone Up, a Fitbit, and a heart rate monitor. I find that the Fitbit can work great for just walking, and it will monitor your sleep as well, if you're interested in that. I work off a Mac, so I sometimes have to reset to get it to sync properly, and I'm really annoyed that I can't get it to sync to my…

Drink enough water before the run. Add a hydration tablet to your water for the run to replace electrolytes. Eat a low glycemic carb (I have 1/2 cup trail mix) an hour before the run. Protein is good, too, but you don't burn that. The best time for protein is right after, to help build strong muscles!

I have a Fitbit which I love, but there are exercises it doesn't really calculate well. For instance, Zumba class, circuit training, bicycling, skiing and karate. I estimate calorie counts on the skiing and exercycling, but I find the HRM I also have works much better for the other stuff. It would probably work better for…

Carb before, and protein after, if you're going to work-out heavily.

I'm pretty active, but I tend to low-ball the exercise calories and high-ball the food and undershoot calories for the whole day just to be sure. Still losing weight, so I guess it's working. Not sure about the set-up for DDR, but I find Wii Fit to have 2-3 minutes of exercise, then you stand around for a minute or two.

I've been skiing Sunday River, ME, 4 days straight now. It was sub-zero one day, and today it's in the 40's (!). Amazingly for this year, there is still natural snow in the hills. It's going to freeze up early this evening again, and then be cold. I am praying for excellent grooming, but I expect ice the next couple of…

Don't hesitate to order just a small amount from some of the starters and ask the waitstaff to bring it with dinner. For instance, the Mediterranean Messe could be good, if it appeals to you. Or a salad, provided they actually have a healthy one. The sea bass looks reasonable. Not sure how it is in the UK, but in the US,…

I log the whole time. When I compare the per hour rate to what I do with something like Zumba or running, it seems reasonable. You can also pick intensity. I figure if there are lots of lines, or I ski like in Zermatt where my husband stopped every 2 minutes to take photos, is light skiing. If the conditions are fast on…

Hi, folks! My name is Birgit and I'm a physician. I have been in practice doing family medicine since finishing residency in 1983. I have always had a keen interest in science, but most of my "research" has just one subject--me! I run little projects on myself to see just how well my advice can work. For instance, right…

Ha! You guys out west had it nothing like the east! It would snow and inch, then rain 2 inches It was so darned warm, they couldn't even make snow and keep it on the mountain. It's a bit better right now, but it's been a real slog for the ski areas. So far, I've made it out 7 times. I had hoped to be a bit further by this…

I'm from New Hampshire, born in Germany, and learned to ski 51 years ago at the age of 4. My husband and I were recently comparing crappy ski equipment stories, like the old farts who had it rough in the Monty Python routine. I started skiing in New Hampshire and practically grew up at Gunstock, right next to beautiful…

I found a specific calculator for Zumba calories on zumbacalories.com. You can enter in how vigorous it is, your weight, and how long, and they'll tell you how many calories. I think you can then create your own exercise that includes that information. The range of exercises goes from "Can sing while doing it" to "barely…
