  • Dairy stalls some people so I guess you just have to work out what's best for your body. I eat a lot of dairy as I don't eat meat but have to admit, my consumption of yummy double cream will have to be pulled back soon as my weight loss slows :grumble: But, without dairy I couldn't low carb. Greek yoghurt and cheese are…
  • Quick tip as you're in the UK... don't get your peanut butter from H&B... Waitrose has an essential wholenut peanut butter that has NO added sugar just whole nut. It's fab and the whole jar costs £1.40. And as someone else said, none of the grains are low carb :( Mind you, if you don't need to go ultra low carb (50g or…
  • Vegetarian........ but I loooove meat! It's just ethical with me. Partner's a meat eater and son's a vegan which makes for very interesting mealtimes
  • Rubbish. Once your glycogen stores are depleted your body then switches to burning fat stores. When you change to low carb eating you immediately start depleting your glycogen stores so you initially lose a lot of weight. You also get what's known as carb flu as your body adjusts. Once you're in ketosis, your body will…
  • There are low carb groups on MFP you can check out and ask questions. There's various low carb diets so it's just a case of research, trying out and finding what suits you. Paleo is one, or just counting carbs but even then you have to choose your level. I aim for under 50g per day and am usually under 30g but then I don't…
  • Thanks guys I managed to hang on so far today and pleased I did. Maybe it's just time to change things a bit? I'm wavering over joining a gym not cos it won't be good for me but because of confidence issues I guess. I just do a lot of walking for exercise at the moment as I've been too embarrassed to go swimming etc…
  • Me too....... I love leftover dinner for breakfast especially cold spicy cabbage :) Also, porridge, soya yoghurt and fruit with omega seeds sprinkled on top, veg omelette, scrambled egg, MIM (low carb muffin made with flax) toasted fruit bread (altho can't have this at the moment) Mmm, making me hungry
  • So MFP recommendations are crap? Possibly but they seem to work for many people. I'm 5ft 1in, 50yrs old and a moderately active female. By any recommendation I shouldn't be losing weight on 2000-25000 calories per day. Looks to me like you do weights or go to the gym or something.... I walk. Still, it's always calories in…
  • Oh, and I eat a ton of veg and plenty of berries and all my tests for cholestrol, bp etc are normal now.... result!
  • For some people this isn't true, just like one size doesn't fit all........... My calorie limit to lose weight according to MFP is about 1400, I regularly go waaaay over, sometimes up to 2500 and still lose weight. Why? Because it suits my body to limit my carbs to less than 50g per day, usually I'm at 30g per day. Yet,…
  • I feel for you.. I've suffered migraines since I was 12 and I'm now 50. My mum also suffered so badly in the end her GP gave her injections to use at the onset of an attack. I think you just have to work out what's best for you, find your trigger if you can. Sometimes it's hormonal and there's nothing you can do. For me…
  • I'm sure our nutritional requirements aren't set for a 24hr time frame on the dot! The body's a complex organism. I have favourites that I eat for days/weeks on end then go off them and find something else. I guess as long as your favourites aren't 80% junk it doesn't really matter.
  • There are different forms of IF. The one the OP is referring to is the 5:2 where you only eat 600 cals (500 for women) on 2 days of the week and eat 'normally' the other 5. You're referring to more leangains I guess? Or there's Warrior and probably loads of others.... just find what suits you personally
  • You have to grind the flax so it looks like flour or the seeds will just pass straight through you - they also don't 'absorb' any liquid so you wouldn't bake as such. I buy the seeds in bulk and use a coffee grinder to mill them when needed. You can buy them pre-milled though but I think this is more expensive. HTH :)
  • Hi, I had high bp and was diagnosed pre diabetic earlier this year. I'm also vegetarian (not vegan). I tried the low fat way of controlling weight for many years but it just didn't work for me. Now I count carbs instead. It's a bit more of a challenge doing a low carb diet as a vege but it's certainly doable with a bit of…
  • Hi, I aim for less than 50 carbs a day and am usually around 30. My calories are waaaay over what MFP has set them at, sometimes over 2000 which is maintenance weight. I've lost 40lbs since the middle of April. What I will say though, is that I'm anticipating a plateau at some point and when that happens I'll keep an eye…
  • Any fast food, fizzy drinks (soda) apart from carbonated water :) Takeaways, doughnuts (bleurgh), nutella, and icing (especially icing with marzipan) Anything else........... I have no stop button!
  • Hi, Brighton here :)
  • Thankyou........ very interesting :)
  • I've been researching IF since watching the Horizon programme and have just decided to start tomorrow (work day so I'll be busy). I'm sticking to low carb still as it suits me but will do the 5/2 just to mix things up. If only I'd known that for years I'd done fasting without even realising it. I never ate breakfast and…
  • What are pottasium rich foods? I'm a low carb vegetarian so I do worry I'm not getting enough of everything :)
  • Atkins isn't 'no carbs' it's 'low carbs'. We all have to find what works for us as all our bodies are different! Maybe the first step would be to consult your doctor OP?
  • It's so hard to switch your mindset when low carbing..... fat = fat in my mind.... till I discovered double cream and chocolate MIM for an indulgent, rich dessert. Mmmmm
  • Hi, I don't know what you eat but if you're diabetic you may find it helpful to count your carbs rather than calories? In April I was diagnosed pre-diabetic (insulin resistant) and started limiting my carb intake. Since 12 April I've lost 40lbs and my cravings have gone as has my insulin resistance. When researching how…
  • It's not too bad eating healthy on a budget... you just have to plan ahead. Obviously it helps to have access to stores/markets etc but if not, you can shop online monthly for the basics and just buy fruit/milk/bread etc regularly as you need it. Buying very little to no prepared food is the cheapest thing you can do (and…
  • Yes it can work just as well, you just need to plan more. Your protein sources are gonna be eggs, cheese, soya/tofu and to a certain extent nuts. I also make protein shakes for breakfast sometimes just to boost protein levels. No doubt it's easier as a meat eater but definitely doable as a vegetarian.
  • Thanks for the replies ladies. Funnily enough, a more mature lady just posted her success story on here and it's inspired me no end! If she can look toned and fit in her 60's then I sure can too.... I just need to put in the work. Maybe I'll do swimming and an exercise regime on DVD at home first though :)
  • Thank you for posting your pics... you look amazing! I asked a question today on the fitness board about the best way to tone up my wobbly bits. I was beginning to think that at 50 it would be too late. You've shown that it's never too late. If I don't get to a gym I'm definitely getting a serious DVD plan going. Thanks…
  • Nuts... I love macadamias. I'm vegetarian and keeping my carbs below 50 is a challenge but doable. I eat a ton of veg, soya yoghurt (just because it's low carb), avocados, cheese, babybels and no sugar peanut butter for snacks (pb on celery's good). Almonds and walnuts are low carb. Also I have 85% dark chocolate…
  • The best thing you can do is just START. If you mess up, forget it and just carry on. It's a daunting prospect having so much work to do so don't think of it like that. Think of it as starting a new phase in your life, a healthier phase. You want to change what you've been doing because what you've been doing has got you…
