  • What You Need Ingredients 1 teaspoon butter or olive oil 1 cup steel-cut oats 3 cups water 3-fingered pinch salt 1 cup milk (optional) Tools 2-quart saucepan Instructions 1. Start this the night before you want to have steel-cut oatmeal. • I remember how horrible I felt every day when I was 300 pounds. Also, I think about how much money I have spent on clothing and bicycling gear and how I do not want it to have been a waste. Plus, I have a cycling buddy that I enjoy spending time with. We hold each other accountable.
  • That's a tough one. I was given advice of "do not lend money to a friend unless you can live with the possibility of not being repaid". If you are not in a position where you could make it a gift instead of a loan, simply explain your circumstance and hope the friendship is enough to overcome any hard feelings. I hope it…
  • I found some at a local store, so I figured I would try it. I found it to be a little bitter and I do not think I would eat it as a sandwich. I'm gonna give it another chance, though, and try it with my oatmeal.
  • I have switched to steel cut exclusively because of their texture and nutty flavor.. In a 2 quart saucepan, I pour a teaspoon of olive oil and pour in 1 cup of steel cut oats. I stir them over medium heat until they start to smell toasty (about three minutes). At this point, I pour in three cups of water and a pinch of…
  • The day before I was to start back to college after a seven year break, my wife told me she was pregnant. It gave me incentive to work as hard as I could to get finished and get a better job. It was tough for both of her, but especially for her since I went to school at night. We made it work though. At that point in my…
  • Welcome Jen! I'm a roadie myself. Feel free to add me if you'd like.

  • I gave it up for Lent about 5 years ago. After Easter, I started drinking non-caffeinated soda. Two years ago, I gave those up too. Never regretted it at all. Just drink water now.
  • The crazy church lady was my favorite!
  • I get really bothered when I am in the checkout line at the grocery store. While I am waiting my turn, I can't help but to look at other carts. It really bothers me when I see a mom with young kids and nothing but frozen dinners. One time, and I am not exaggerating, the lady in front of me had thirty dinners. She told the…
  • Too cold/wet here for serious miles, but I did manage 365 for the month (cycling). Longest ride was 95 miles and shortest was 12 (spin class).
  • Mine is set a bit higher, but on weekdays I usually stay close to 1300. My food diary is open if you're interested in checking it out.
  • My standard is steel cut oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar. Just under 300 calories. My diary is public if you'd like to check it out.
  • Great show, but haven't watched tonight's episode yet.
  • Head due north. Lots of good climbs in north GA. We've got a few of our own in south TN as well. Love the climbing!
  • Mine is open. Feel free to look/comment. (The weekends are a little unique, but Monday through Friday are pretty steady).
  • You should be able to ride 70 comfortably by that date.
  • I would love to do this ride and have even considered teaming up with my brother who lives in Omaha. Just can't spare the time off work. There's always next year....
  • Also, your 13-15mph is very impressive for a beginner. Nice!
  • Yes, most of my rides include at least one riding partner. It helps the miles and hours go by easily when you've got someone to talk to.
  • I am not fully aware of any ride training programs, but I would recommend checking out active.com or bicycling.com. Also, I'm sure Google would be able to yield some returns. As of the hand/finger numbness, visit a cycling shop and pick up some gloves with good pads in the palms. The pads are placed in a way that provides…
  • Mine are snug, but I don't have to work very hard or struggle to get them on. The idea is that you want them tight enough so that the pad stays in place. If they are too loose, the pad will shift or sag and they can become quite uncomfortable.
  • 2010 was my first year of cycling. During that year, I rode exactly 4,000 miles which included four century rides. My longest ride was 123 miles. It was on gravel on with 20mph winds. It was a miserable, but very memorable, day. During 2011, I rode 4,479 miles and only did two centuries. I usually ride in the mornings…
  • I find Performance Bicycle to be very comparable.
  • Mike, at my heaviest I was 300 pounds. I earned 121 pounds of weight loss through diet and exercise at the age of 39. It can be done, but it has to be a complete lifestyle change. It is tough to get started, but easy to maintain focus once you start seeing and feeling the results. Good luck to you in making the change for…
  • The town I live in has a curbside recycling program. They provide 3 bins: cardboard, paper, and plastics (numbers 1, 2, & 5). They make it easy to recycle. If it weren't for that, I probably would not.
  • Thanks Stu! I feel empowered now that I understand how to post the pics and the correct size info.
  • I can't get the link to work. Can someone please explain this to me? :frown:
