  • There's also this book called "The New Rules of Lifting for Women". You should check it out. ;)
  • Niner - you always have great advice on the forums. Thanks for that!
  • It's true: men do burn fat more quickly, but don't discount us. Some of us are working just as hard to try to drop some weight, so reading "They don't have to work as hard" is kinda offensive.
  • Hahaha i started this exact topic earlier today, except my experience is that MFP seems to put lower goals than what other calculators come up with. But you are right to be weary of calories burned. Some of the MFP preset calorie goals seem a little bit high. I'd recommend just watching your own numbers (waist, weight,…
  • Jens: i feel your pain. Right now I'm balancing job, relationship, school and trying to get this whole "weight" thing under control. I've discovered the best thing I can do right now is watch my eating. I don't go to the gym but I do try to go for a short walk. Even during my classes when I get a 10 minute break, I take a…
  • Hiya TeenaDe! Great job and welcome to MFP! You do tend to have an initial larger burn than you will see in coming weeks. The important thing is to keep that enthusiasm you have now and to not completely trust numbers. In the next few weeks you'll see that the scale says you've only lost 1lb, or that you haven't lost any…
  • Hmm... upon further review, I think that Mike may be correct. I've just found a couple different calculators and played with some settings and a lot of them are calculating some sort of extra exercise and not giving just a base maintain rate. Interesting
  • xray - Agreed, because the calculators I've found online don't have a metric for workout calories, so that's where the confusion comes in. I don't understand how MFP says I should consume 2000cal/day and other ones say I should consume 2800cal/day to reach the same result from the same point. I've noticed on a day to day…
  • That's a good point. Btw, great job on the 76lbs lost!
  • Sure, I see where you're getting at but I mean just the base calories ignoring exercising. You're right though, as you exercise your calorie allowance increases but I'm more focused just on that base calorie starting point for the day.
  • Yikes, a lot of that depends on how hard you were going. I'd be inclined to trust your machine over what's in here. Did you pre-progam anything into the machine (ie. Weight, age, etc.)?
  • Hahaha the worst part about it, is it's catchy. It found its way into my gym playlist O.o
  • Crazy, lots of great ideas! A lot of my stuff's been coming from OCRemix, so things like Megaman 2 - Project X style, and an electric guitar remix of One-Winged Angel from FFVII, but my brother introduced me to Anamanguchi, and YMKC (?) and they've been doing well for me :)
  • See, and that's what I was sort of doing. Just eating a piece of fruit or something small, just enough to get a bit of energy, but I was wondering if that was super unhealthy, or if fat burning would work better on an empty stomach. I get the whole "Starvation mode" thing, but... I dunno
  • Yeah, I'm looking for more lower back exercises I can do at home without weights, isometric style. I know there's tons for upper back and abs, but if anyone had favorites for the lower back I'd be super interested to hear them
  • Keep at it. You hit plateaus every now and again. I usually find that means it's time to shake up the workout routine a little bit. Maybe toss a bit of interval training in there, or do some unusual isometric type exercises. Don't get discouraged: even if the scale is pointing at the same number, your pants are probably…
  • Cardio and eat smart. Lol, I know, revolutionary thinking, but just remember: your body doesn't target specific fat when you work out, so cardio will burn it where ever it finds it, but it'll also burn protein, carbs, and pretty much anything it can get its hands on. Focus on an all around work out and it'll happen. It…
  • That's a great story! I think that's something we all need to keep in mind: sometimes the scale isn't moving, but we're still losing size. Congrats =)
  • Hiya Martinne68! You're in the right place if you're looking for motivation. Lots of great people with great ideas seem to congregate here!

  • Yeah, do your homework on them. I've heard they're great, but then I've also heard they change the natural arch of your foot so you actually can't really wear normal shoes any more, so be careful. Seems a bit gimmicky imho, but this is a completely uneducated, unexperienced opinion. Just seems like the "magic pill"
  • Hiya Sammi! Love the enthusiasm you're coming with! I think the toughest part about working out is reining in the enthusiasm in the first few days. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is: start small! I know, I know! It's completely counter intuitive, but the easiest way to get discouraged is to go hard the first…
  • Nice! Even changing something like that makes a huge difference in the long run! Same with switching from regular pop to diet. If you find something that can substitute and you can stand the taste, run with it!
  • Personally, I'm a fan of eggs. I know you said "No" to canned foods, but tins of tuna actually help out quite a bit too, just have to watch the mercury if you consume too much
  • Hey, congratulations!! It's great to see those numbers go up! New Top Score :D
  • Haha, here's my current playlist for the gym, it's great for cardio: Black Betty - Spiderbait Glitter Freeze - Gorillaz Evacuate the Dance Floor - Cascada Take Me On The Floor - Veronicas Numa Numa (When You Leave) - Basshunter and Alina ***Feel Good Inc*** - Gorillaz No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age Untouched -…
  • I say change up your routine! Hitting a plateau sucks, especially when you know you're putting in the effort, so keep it interesting, and keep your goals in mind. Personally, to stay on track, I hung up a shirt on my wall that's too small for me, and when I bought it it was too small even back then, and that's been my…
  • Haha! I think it was just that kind of week last week! Grab your shoes, get in the car and start driving to the gym, or walking, or however you get there. It's surprising how much better you feel once you get there!
  • Start small! And yeah, do things like taking the stairs. When I decided I was going to make a change, all I started with was 10 minutes a day. Whether it was a 10 minute walk, or step, or whatever. Then I started seeing places I could get exercise in my daily life, like taking the stairs. You'll start to feel better and…
  • Hey Kaeloe! Good attitude! Keep that mentality and you'll hit your goal before you know it! If you need support, or want that little push, remember us :)
