Too much junk in it for my taste. There's plenty of whey protein brands that are better quality. Optimum Nutrition is widely available and a good choice. I also like myprotein.com for the price.

At a certain point I decided alcohol wasn't worth the calories or money outside of very occasional (once every 2 months or so) trips out with friends. It can certainly work for calories in, calories out weight loss; but it makes getting proper nutrients for the day harder because it's pretty much just empty calories.

Some folks have found intermittent fasting to help with the last few pounds in your situation. Definitely doesn't work for everyone though.

Local crossfit competition, the event was: 5 power cleans @ 135, 50 double unders on the jump rope, and 15 pullups; as many rounds as possible in 8 minutes, followed by 5 minutes to hit a one rep max clean. My previous max on the clean was 185, hit 225.

Pickled vegetables or homemade vegetable chips (dehydrated or baked, not fried) are something you can eat plenty of without too much worry. They're very low calorie and filling.

Any raw vegetable will fill you up quickly. Be careful with nuts. While it's a good source of protein and fat, they are very calorie dense. Not a good source for something that you can just go nuts on. If you're not concerned about sodium, pickled anything is fantastic. Doesn't have to be cucumbers... okra, cauliflower,…

Generic creatine monohydrate. Other forms are alright, but monohydrate is cheapest and just as effective as the others. Easiest is to buy a big tub of powder that you can mix into a protein shake or pre-workout. I believe that technically it's taken by the body best with carbs, but honestly it doesn't matter much. Take 5g…

If you enjoy sour, look into sour beers. A gose is refreshing and generally in the 100-125 calorie range (similar to most light beers).

I was already active (gym 5 days a week, yoga most days) but have found that going for a post-dinner evening walk with phone in hand is a nice way to cap the night off.

As long as it's doctor prescribed and monitored, I see no issue with pills that assist with weight loss. If it gives people the jump start they need to make healthy eating a lifelong habit, then great! The issue is over the counter pills that are either a) huge doses of caffeine that your body quickly adjusts to and become…

Something else to keep in mind is that you're going to trend towards being strong in some areas and weak in others. I can rep out cleans all day, I can row/run at a high rate for extended periods, but I fall apart on thrusters and snatches. Crossfit is very good at highlighting your weaknesses. You can either accept those…

Bahama breeze is just the Olive Garden of Caribbean food (owned by the same company). Eat good local food while you're here. We have excellent Vietnamese restaurants here that can be relatively healthy. Check out 4 rivers. Get some smoked turkey and green beans for a bbq meal that doesn't bust your calories. Or even…

Some people I know use a slingshot (google slingshot + bench press) to help them break through plateaus. It will help you bench more weight than you could without it and keep your form tight.

Why not try counseling? Your commitment to being healthy physically is awesome, but it seems that mental stress is dragging you down. Talking it out with a professional might do you a world of good and give you a good toolset.

Crossfit involves strength training, which requires protein. Are you vegetarian or vegan? If milk is OK, whey protein will help you meet your protein needs pretty easily.

Erin, after you fully recover, I'd recommend looking for a Crossfit gym that offers an on-ramp/foundations class. The goal is to teach each movement in a small group or one-on-one setting, while easing you into the workouts. They'll also teach you to scale movements to your ability level.

Rule #1: If the coaches don't advertise their certifications, it's probably a bad box. Rule #2: If their only certification is Crossfit L1 (a weekend course), they're 99% likely to be a bad box. Luckily, many of the worst gyms are starting to close down as bad coaching tends to drive people away.

Don't go back to that gym, for the love of god. Angie is an awful workout for a first timer. If you don't have rhabdo you're incredibly lucky. Continue to monitor your health, drink tons of water, and if the soreness increases then go back to your doctor. Coaches that let a new member jump right into something like Angie…

My wife likes yoga by adrienne. I do romwod but it's subscription and really more focused on range of motion for lifting.

Normally a few days, followed by 1-2 weeks of taking it light (try not to sweat crazy or do something that would end up in fabric rubbing it a lot). Personally, I'd play it safe with the tattoo. You can make up a couple weeks of gym time, it's not so easy to make up damage to a tattoo.

Just personal preference.

Caffeine is the best pre-workout. Beta Alanine is supposed to have some positives as well, but that's more tenuous plus it can freak people out due to feeling tingly after taking it. But really, all of these your body gets used to and aren't effective long-term.

Man, it's almost like some people want to work on conditioning and strength building at the same time! Any intense exercise carries risk of injury. I've done Crossfit for 2.5 years, and have no injuries to report. Meanwhile, at least half of my friends who run or do cardio classes have ended up at a PT from overuse…

Regular yoga helps me with soreness.

It happens. Crossfit can make you ravenous, and it's sometimes too easy to justify a bad food choice because hey, a few hours ago you thought you might die of thrusters. But like any sport or fitness regimen, you can't outwork a bad diet. I've found that it's easier to control cravings and keep my calories in line by…

I'd be wary of doing it on a calorie deficit. But if the cardio is low impact, you should be fine. I often do two a days during summer (teacher so i'm off), and I'll usually do crossfit with deliberately lighter weights and then do a heavy lifting session later that day. Just remember your muscles (and joints, while we're…

wait, are you exercising in dress shoes? please stop doing that immediately if so. You need to find someone who knows what they're doing and go to the gym with them, or at least watch some youtube videos that can help give you some cues to do exercises properly.

It depends on you. Generally speaking, some carbs eaten 30-60 minutes before the workout works for most people. Post-workout, something with protein and something with a bit of sugar or simple carbs. Me, I don't do pre-workout meals because there's a chance I might not keep it down. Post workout I'll usually grab a piece…
