  • I wonder if one of you could explain these numbers then For six weeks I ate 1500 net cals per day, including 100 grams carbs. I lost no weight. Now I eat 1200 net cals per day, including 50 grams carbs. Protein and exercise are the same as before. I am losing 3 pounds per week. 300 calories lower x 7 days = 2100 calories…
  • Yes, I am aware that the study was about weight GAIN. That doesn't necessarily make it irrelevant though. If all calories aren't equal where weight gain is concerned, maybe they aren't where weight loss is concerned either. The proportion of people with some amount of insulin resistance is not overly small. If you have…
  • This is a small study both in length and in number of subjects, but it does indicate that calories are not necessarily equal: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19396658/?i=11&from=bmr%20insulin
  • FOR ME, a calorie is not a calorie. I have severe insulin resistance. When I eat higher carb, I am more sluggish, lethargic, etc. I am pretty darn sure that what I eat actually ultimately changes my BMR. I can feel it when my body is and isn't working properly. I tried counting calories for years and years and years. I…
  • I don't know, it's all just averages, and therefore impossible to know what your own BMR is specifically. I think I would focus on trying to improve the insulin resistance (& therefore raise your BMR). What seems to be working for me is to be strict about the carbs, and also doing interval training (which is known to…
  • What works for me, really, is more meat and seafood. Going for more volume and variety. In terms of fruit, I mostly stick with strawberries. A cup of strawberries has half the sugar of a cup of apple.
  • Different ranges of macros work for different people. Those who are on a low carb diet, and eat moderate protein for example, can eat 50-60% fats or more, and lose weight.
  • I lost 100 pounds a few years ago, without exercise, and have kept it off (I ate lower carb primarily). I'm now working on losing the remaining excess. Again through lower carb, and also exercise. Exercising doesn't need to be 45 mins on the elliptical at the gym, or similar, though. When you are ready to try some…
  • IMO I don't think adding the last 500mg of metformin sooner will help the hunger. Are you eating enough calories? How much protein/fat?
  • Lower carb is the only thing that's worked for me to lose weight. I am insulin resistant with the PCOS.
  • There's no shortage of demonizing meat OR grains out there. Personally I have been eating mostly paleo, in large part because I am insulin resistant with PCOS (poly cystic ovaries). I'm sure many would be horrified that I am eating more meat and more fat to lower my weight and blood pressure, but it works for me.
  • I have pcos, and I aim for under 100g carbs and over 100g protein. I don't eat potatoes, grains, or sugar except for the occasional treat. I do eat some fruit though, as well as veggies. And lots of eggs, fish, chicken, pork, etc. I also do interval training (just with jogging) 3x per week. I have lost 20 pounds since the…
  • Insulin resistance can be diagnosed with blood tests. I have insulin resistance and poly cystic ovarian syndrome. I can tell you what works for me. I don't eat potatoes, grains, or refined sugar, except for the occasional treat. I aim for less than 100g of carbs a day, and more than 100g of protein. it means not being…
