  • Sorry to hear you're having problems. No one here can accurately diagnose you without a) being a trained health professional and b) meeting you face to face! I suggest you go to your doctor or a physiotherapist to get checked out. There are several reasons for sudden inflammation, some of them minor, some not so minor.…
  • Following the last two posts, I also have iron defieicency anaemia. It's under control now, but really kicked in when I stopped eating so much meat and ate quorn instead (iron free). I have had insomnia almost all my life, get about 4-5 hours per night, and don't have a problem with tiredness. But when I'm anaemic I can't…
  • Crepitus normally gives no indication of disease or injury, it usually occurs when the ligaments are a little more lax than they were previously, but can (as previously stated) be an indication of osteoarthritis. If there is pain along with the cracking, that is a different matter and you should get checked out by a…
  • Well done! What a great achievement, and a great feeling! How are your legs? I did a half marathon last April, nearly killed me but worth it :) Not running any more due to knee problems, but keeping up with the exercise. I agree, C25K is a great way to get started for anyone. Congratulations!
  • I'm in the UK so have no idea about the gyms, sorry. I had a personal trainer just for a single session so that she could show me what to do with all the free weights (the machines are pretty self-explanatory). From that we worked out a pretty good workout to start off with, and I am building up from there. I now have the…
  • ^^ This. Great advice, thank you !
  • ^^ Sounds interesting, haven't heard of nutirional yeast. Just a warning about LoSalt (the potassium chloride replacement for sodium chloride): if you have a heart condition you shouldn't take this as high levels of potassium can disrupt the heart rhythm. Strange that it's advertised as heart healthy!
  • Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is a natural part of strengthening exercise. It's usually worst around 1-2 days after a workout, as your muscles are repairing after doing some microdamage through exercise you're not used to. However, it's this that makes your muscles eventually stronger as they start to bulk out;…
  • Hi Meike I would very strongly recommend you see a rehabilitation physiotherapist - it's amazing that you were able to get up at all after 15 years in bed, well done! They will be able to test your muscle strength and advise which areas need working on first, and how to regain your muscle strength and endurance. All the…
  • I think Jamie Oliver has shares in Olive Oil. He uses sooooo much of it in everything. I even saw the other day he'd made a lovely butternut squash soup, served it up, then poured oil all over it. Why? WHYYYY?
  • I wear ankle socks, put the key near the top of the sock and roll it down - you can carry both keys this way. I used the other sock for a map when I was running long-distance. Only problem: kept forgetting to take the map out and ended up with a whole lot of washing plus tiny bits of paper. MP3 player - armband as before.…
  • I just put in that walk to MFP, and 43 mins at 3.0mph (moderate pace, walking dog) comes out at 174 cals. I weight 162lb, am 34 (although the site thinks I'm older) - did you use the same type of walking? In which case, it does take weight into account.
  • I decided last December to sign up for a half marathon on the 1st April 2012. That gave me 3 1/2 months to train. I hadn't run for around 16 years, was overweight, and when I started I did the C25K thing as well. Very disheartened to start off with, I managed 12 mins on a treadmill, and only about 6 of those were actually…
  • That's incredible, you're an inspiration!
  • In theory it could work, although it didn't for me. I know this isn't about health, but having an "unhealthy" diet (lots of carbs, esp. sugar, and fat) leads to all the nasties later in life - diabetes, heart disease, atheroscleroma, stroke etc. So surely it's better to get into a healthy habit now rather than exercising…
  • I'm in London, feel free to add me! Lots of people from the UK (as you'll see from the number of Tesco/Sainsbury's foods), but yes, a lot of US people here too. Kate
  • I'd love to join in if there's space please!
  • I'd love to join in if there are still places!
  • Thank you for your reply. This looks like being a long-term thing; I've had headaces for 11 years and for the first time ever I'm hardly ever getting them, it's such a relief that I can't imagine going back to that again. Let's hope the side effects subside as you've suggested. Shame about not having the loss of appetite…
  • As said by Starla - pelvis floor exercises will strengthen you so that you are able to hold it in longer. Loads on youtube. They're easy to do, as no-one can see what you're doing :)
  • A close family member had no periods for 10 years. She was anorexic. Once she got the help she needed, which by that point included hospital stays, she managed to gain some weight and started having periods again. Having been told she would never have kids, she now has 2. But she's one of the lucky ones. Please look after…
  • This has to be the best suggestion - it's what I do too. I jumped into a half marathon having never run before. I did it, but ruined my knee in the process and now can't run at all. I walk as much as possible, play tennis with a friend (we have free coundil owned tennis courts nearby) and do strength training by doing the…
  • My favourite fish dinner, takes 25 minutes: 1 salmon or trout fillet (about 3 oz) Cumin and paprika powders 3oz new potatoes bag of baby spinach an egg veg - carrots/broccoli/mange tout - whatever you like! 1 lime Place fish on a sheet of baking foil, sprinkle some cumin powder and paprika powder, or a bit of ground black…
  • Now! You don't have to start with giant dumbells and lots of grunting. The idea of a PT for a few sessions is great to get the right idea about what to do. If you have gym membership, they can usually organise this for you. You can start on the resistance machines, where you can choose the weight you're lulling/pushing…
  • Tesco often do a side of salmon for £10, it cuts up into around 9 or 10 pieces - I put them in separate food bags and freeze them. Markets usually much cheaper for fruit and veg than supermarkets. The other thing I've found really useful is planning (roughly) what I'm going to eat for the week, that way I only buy what I…
  • Unfortunately not, the nearest one is 6 miles away and don't do monthly membership - I've "joined" them so I can swim there fairly cheaply, but it takes a long time to get there and back. Good idea though! Thanks.
  • I didn't know that, thanks! Will look into it :)
  • Well remembered! Yes, I went back for almost 2 weeks, and put on about 3 pounds. You'd be surprised at the lack of couselling in the 70s, unfortunately, but I'll show her this and see what she thinks. Scan products? Is that with some fancy-dan kind of a phone or sommert? I use yoghurt pots and string. Will def try the…
  • Whilst living with an American girl, she turned to me in a bar and said "woah, you're double fisting!" I nearly dropped the 2 drinks I was holding! Such a different meaning over here...
