Knees Crackling?

I just noticed a couple months ago that my knees crackle when I do anything with them beyond walking. If I go up steps, do lunges or squats, high knees, things like that...there isn't any pain with it, but I am wondering if there is anything I should do to make sure it doesnt become painful or mess anything up? I know a few people with knee problems that prevents them from doing certain workouts and I don't want to make things worse, but at the same time, it doesnt hurt so I want to just keep going so I can lose weight and stop putting further stress on them. Thoughts?

Make sure you are using good form in whatever it is your doing and that should help keep pain at bay. My knees are often cracking also and the only time I really get pain is when I lock my knees out while running. I have had arthritic knees since my teenage years and have found proper form to be the best remedy for pain. Hope that helps and good luck!!

I'd say that's a bad thing and probably worth a visit to your orthopedist.

It's called crepitus, which is where the word decrepit has its origins. It's most often associated with arthritis, but can have various causes depending on if it is a bone or soft tissue problem. I would have it looked at on your next checkup, but I wouldn't go rushing off to the ER or anything.

You might wanna have it checked out. I have bone on bone on my left knee and a crooked knee cap and the thighbone is off from the lower leg bone but I don't want surgery nor will they do it at my age of 49. I did loose weight and it has helped alot so it doesn't bother me much now and I have started back up doing dog agility that the knee dr told me to stop last Feb 2012 due to the knee. Good luck!

I feel you! My knees, ankles and shoulders pop all the time, always have. You'd think I would be used to it, but it still kind of grosses me out while I'm working out. No pain, just popping. I hate it.

my left knee and left leg at the top of the thigh joint pop too. If I lie flat and do a leg raise I can hear/feel it pop. my partner says its not normal but it doesnt hurt or cause any problems at all

Crepitus normally gives no indication of disease or injury, it usually occurs when the ligaments are a little more lax than they were previously, but can (as previously stated) be an indication of osteoarthritis. If there is pain along with the cracking, that is a different matter and you should get checked out by a physiotherapist or your GP. If it's not painful, although it sounds alarming, there's unlikely to be anything seriously wrong. As someone above said, making sure you do everything with good form will help to prevent knee problems. Good luck!

My shoulders pop whenever I work them, I always assumed it was air pockets, same as cracking your knuckles?
