Patience.....you've only been running for 4 months. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, your only goal should be building aerobic fitness. Don't worry about speed yet, if you're consistent it will come. My best ever 10K was 54:41 a few years ago but it took years of very consistent training (I didn't start running…

Keen makes great quality products and you could also check out Merrell.

In terms of calories an additional 20lbs will mean an increased expenditure of 6 calories for every mile walked. The real benefit of using a weighted vest is that the additional weight may help with bone density.

If you know the distance it's pretty easy to estimate net calories as long as you weren't race walking. Weight (in lbs) X .30 X distance in miles Speed has little to do with it, it's physics, it takes a certain amount of energy to move a give mass over a distance.

My TT bike which is up on the trainer right now waiting for the snow to go bye bye......

Check out 80/20 types of running plans (80% of your runs at low intensity) Based on 5 runs a week that would be 4 easy to moderate and one faster / speedwork. You didn't say how long you've been running for but hitting 175 to 180 sounds a bit intense for every run (I hit that racing or doing hill repeats)

I've had a Concept2 rower for about 10 years now and have never regretted buying it. Basically the only maintenance has been cleaning the bar and lubing the chain in close to 10,000,000 meters of rowing. The C2 units are not cheap (with the pandemic there are waiting lists for them) but they are the gold standard of rowing…

Cycling VO2max of 45, the fitness age being 45 years lower than my chronological age I take with a grain of salt.

It's too bad that PaceMaster went out of business, while I don't use mine as much as you're using yours it's performed flawlessly for about 12 years and only now is starting to show its age (speed control needs replacing but there are no parts). The only complaint I've ever had about it is that a wider deck would have been…

LOL I've always thought that these polar bear swimmers etc are a special kind of crazy!

For really cold days nothing beats a merino wool base layer. It gets cold here and I've run quite comfortably down to almost -40 (same in C or F) with a merino wool base layer, merino wool socks, med weight tights (most important thing is that they're wind proof) with a med weight half zip & fleece layer topped off with a…

We had a PT instructor in college that made us skip.......it's hard work and even in my youth left me gasping for air. I might just add some to my work out routine.

"during my workout classes".....it's their workout class too. Does it bother others? Does it bother the instructor? Perhaps you're in the wrong class......

I buy most of my runners online but I have stayed with the same couple of shoes (with varying iterations) for years. If, for some reason, I needed to go to different type (ie stability vs neutral) I'd go to a running shop for a gait analysis and buy at least my first pair of the new shoes from them (going to a shop & them…

If you can, return the spin bike and get a smart trainer. I don't use zwift that often but have been using TrainerRoad and just keep an eye on my power levels while having the boob tube on. It'll get your heart rate up seated or otherwise.

Great pictures, especially the mountain goat!

I was closer to 50 when I started and, so far, the only negative has been spending money on smaller clothes. One of the real advantages of starting later in life is (assuming the racing bug bites you) that you'll be improving for quite a few more years and setting PRs while your contemporaries are slowing down (they could…

1 hr (12,562 metres) on the rower today - hit the 100,000m threshold for the C2 Holiday Challenge, 100,000 more to go by Dec 24th.

It's also a recovery issue. If your longest runs are around 5K it's probably not a big deal but if you were, for example, training for a half or full marathon and your runs were getting longer it may be ill advised.

The good news is that we evolved to walk long distances 365 days per year and in terms of energy expenditure are quite efficient (a 200lb person burns an addition 60 calories or so walking 1 mile). Having said that, if you've been sedentary for some time treat it like any new activity; start off with shorter walks and…

A little OT but C2 has a lot of great videos on their website for learning rowing form and they also will send you their workout of the day email if you subscribe (they'll have several workouts each day based on your fitness level and goals) they also offer a free online logbook for tracking your rowing (they have a…

There was a race walking group at the indoor dome my son had soccer practice at years ago......some of them could really motor. Definitely much faster than regular walking and some race walkers are probably faster then me running longer distances (my best half-marathon was just over 2:09, the world record for a race…

Get yourself a pair of bib tights, you can always add a merino wool base layer if it's really cold, the bib tights will stop you from getting any exposed skin if you're getting a little more aerodynamic. Check out "lobster" gloves, not quite a mitten and not quite a glove - you'll thank me later!

There are some aspects to the fitness industry that I despise and one of them is promoting unrealistic expectations. 4 weeks is an incredibly short period of time and, while you probably did make some progress, it's not enough time to see drastic changes. Getting really defined abs takes both a lot of dedicated work over…

My row yesterday was added numerous time but that seems to have been the only hiccup, if it happens again you can just delete the duplicate workouts.

30 min on the bike trainer & 5,000m indoor rowing

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware that they had Olympic biathletes in the family, that's an impressive sport. Have you seen what one of those .22 rifles goes for?
