  • I used to row for Thames on the Tideway, and was in a vet VIII a couple of years back, but since moving to the Middle East (again!) I haven't done much. Just the ergo, and cycling now, though there are a couple of clubs in Dubai. Tried it out here a few times, and it was great, have to row at 4-00am in the summer though,…
  • That's pretty damn quick for a 2k Lucan 07. Great performance.
  • Wow, lots of new guys, and some seriously good times. You're right Michelle, we could be serious contenders for the January challenge. I'm going to try and join in, but I expect to be working in the Middle East, and will have to find a local gym. Shouldn't be a problem. :-)
  • Wow, haven't been here for a while. Lots of new faces and stories. Great to see! Welcome to all, and don't be intimidated, I've yet to find anyone in this group who isn't incredibly supportive and helpful. I'll visit more often in future.
  • Another nice little vid from the Decent rowing series, showing a good ergo exercise for the catch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyYeQZ-dOqk&feature=youtu.be
  • Hello Elle, you need to practice feet out on the ergo. What tends to happen, is that you get used to pulling yourself up the slide on the footstraps., then take the catch and open up the body angles before the legs are fully driven down. Net result is that you shoot off the back of the slide, as feet come away from the…
  • Here's a little tip I picked up during my full on training days. When rowing on the Concept 2, there's a point where the chain stops going forwards, and starts to come backwards as you apply the pressure from the legs. This is the "catch". The catch needs to be as swift and smooth as possible. To help, focus on a point…
  • That makes three of us!
  • Another May 5th here.
  • Rowing, not for the faint hearted.
  • Actually. not far from Aberdeen, about 35 miles South, near Lunan bay in Angus, just a little North of Arbroath. Beautiful countryside for cycling, but not in Winter!
  • My understanding is as follows; Following Terry's recommendations, we don't go for the longer aerobic rows as per the ~youngsters~ , but we keep the same mix as if we were going to do Summer regattas. 1. Peak power. This is like going off the start of a race, very high rating, very high intensity, lots of adrenaline, uses…
  • Up in Scotland, a lot of the roads aren't salted or gritted, and become sheets of ice with a thin layer of powder on top. Way too dangerous for road bikes. Mine's away until we get a thaw, probably about next May!
  • Dear lady, have no qualms. Your man is just being honest, and you should be equally honest. My lovely wife frets over my weight, and my heart, I exercise. She has bad breath, I tell her, and we buy mouthwash together. She wants an honest opinion of the new shoes, I tell her they're not expensive enough. I glance at a…
  • Best yet! 30 mins, avg split 1.54, 7864 Mtrs. Gasping for breath at the end, but lungs weren't quite on fire, so know I can go faster with some more training. Legs felt fine, it's just the oxygen intake I need to master!
  • Unfortunately, I think that I'll have to be in London for work, so may not be able to join in. As soon as clarified, I'll sign up if I'm able to contribute.
  • I breath in just before the catch, and fully exhale through the stroke and on the finish, then I snatch a short "in-out" breath on the recovery, and inhale again just before the catch. When putting the pressure on I must sound like an old steam engine! Here's a link to breathing on the Concept 2 site;…
  • Here's a useful technique video, with a breakdown of the rowing stroke, and a correct sequencing of the body positions through the stroke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ82RYIFLN8&feature=related
  • Now you've gone and spoiled my day. I'm all of a sudden hungry!
  • 2.05 splits is why they are the seniors! For your 2 x 500m, just remember to do some feet out, and fixed seat rowing, as part of your warm up, that will help get you into the right posture. It's all about maintaining the technique whilst the body's under stress. I think you might surprise yourself. Good luck.
  • That sounds nice EvieCat. Haven't managed to get into a boat for a while, and being out on a lake makes me a tinge green.
  • Hey Elle, at this stage, that looks pretty fine, and quite a bit above average. A few more sessions, and you'll break 2.30 splits for 20 mins easy!
  • Had a bit of a fail yesterday through tiredness, so cut my session short. Ate a bowl of beef stew and potatoes last night, to try and put some energy back in. What a difference today! Did an effortless 30mins, rating a steady 26, heart rate a constant 124, and easily hit my 7.4K+ target. Just goes to show, you can't run on…
  • Hello Tyson, definitely start out slowly, and get the technique right from the start. There are some good little videos around to help. Try these sites to start with; http://www.howtorow.com/how-to-row http://concept2.co.uk/training/technique Your machine is two handed, like sculling, but that doesn't matter, the technique…
  • MFP has me on 1200 a day, but I find I completely lose all energy if I don't eat back a good portion of my workout calories. I try to do between 30-60 mins on my rowing machine every day, and now I'm starting to run and cycle too. I just can't keep going if I try to stick to the 1200. Still losing weight though, roughly a…
  • Hi Will, I rowed for Thames from about 1988 to 1996. My last race was a head across Paris, and we started No1, chased by a few national squads! (We were veterans.) My real racing was done in Leicester, and Bristol , and I raced at Henley in 1984 and 1986. Didn't get further than the first day though, I know of Furnivall…
  • Please don't be intimidated by the times posted here, the important thing is that you are enjoying the exercise, and 5, 6, and 10k workouts are perfectly fine, at your own pace. Get the technique right, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you'll develop, and be able to tick along quite happily at an improved pace. Good…
  • Damn, I'm past it.....59.
  • 20 mins, 5115 metres, Avg split 1.57 Best yet.
