  • I probably got ppm and ppb mixed up. I know it was under the fed standard until the fed changed the standard. Just before I moved they were getting ready to add some equipment to remove some of the arsenic. The city water system consisted of three wells and a big tank on the hill. The automatic tank level control was…
  • The last place I lived (before this one) had 7 ppm of arsenic in the water and it was still probably safer than bottled. People in that town have been drinking it since the mid 1800's and they're all a pretty healthy bunch. I've never consumed anything but tap water, except maybe when away from home and needing a drink.…
  • Sugar free Metamucil. It's not really a laxative, just ground up psyllium husks. It's the only thing that has ever worked for me. YMMV. Edit: Oops. I didn't realize this was a really old thread that I've already replied to with the same advice.
  • Per a doctors instruction years ago, 2 moderately heaping tablespoons of sugar free Metamucil (or equivalent) ever night before bed. Keeps things moving along nicely. I get either Metamucil or Equate Fiber (orange flavored) from Amazon for pretty decent prices. If I don't do this regularly, nothing else happens regularly.
  • This is the scale I use. I bought it in 2010 and it's still working fine. I live in an RV and it's stored on it's side next to the shower. When I use it I set it on the floor (not the carpet), step on it and wait for it to give me a weight, step off and let it shut off (it calibrates itself then if necessary) and then step…
  • I've had a One for a few years. I thought about the Flex and decided I didn't want to always have to wear something on my wrist. I also read about problems with it accurately counting steps. I find the One to be pretty accurate for any step based activity. Any other activity I simply log as an activity on the Fitbit page.…
  • I'm one of those that weighs every day. First thing in the morning after hitting the bathroom and before I eat or drink anything. I try to ignore increases, cause they happen for all the reasons already listed. I log any new low. As long as I'm logging a new low every week or so I'm happy enough. Seems like it's going…
  • Is there an anxiety or depression group on MFP? I've been on online support groups for anxiety and depression and sometimes they help, or sometimes they turn into wallowing in self pity parties. Seems like weight and exercise can be related to depression (it's hard to lose when we're depressed, being overweight makes us…
  • So why is it that a bag of candy (you name it. Gum drops, spice drops are one of my favorites. Jelly beans. Those candy orange slices. Hard candies. Or even a bag of marshmallows), aren't going to survive more than a few hours in my presences. None of those have salts or fats. I'm not claiming to be "addicted" to sugar.…
  • Minca I can totally relate to depression. I've fought with this since my early 20's and I'm 48 now. Major Depressive Disorder, they call it. Among other things. I can go to seriously not wanting to get out of bed depression, like lately. To mild every day depression. But I can't say I've ever not been at least somewhat…
  • I hope this doesn't sound snarky, but seriously, 16 pounds and he's making comments? Are you 4 feet tall? Sure, you have a range you want to stay in and that's fine. If 16 is out of the range then you need to deal with it for your own satisfaction. But your husband seriously needs a good smack upside the head.
  • I quit (again) two weeks ago. There have been some rough patches, I'm used to having one in the morning, or when I get in the truck to go somewhere. And I would have one when I was bored or craving food, whatever. Or being around someone who is a smoker. I don't remember how many times I've quit. I think this is try 4 or…
  • Just throwing this out there. Grapefruit interacts badly with a number of common medications. I'm not saying grapefruit is bad or anything. Just that people should be aware of this. http://www.drugs.com/article/grapefruit-drug-interactions.html
  • Do you have a smart phone? I use a program called Sleep As Android. (It's for Android phones obviously, but there might be something similar for the iPhone). It does some pretty trick sleep tracking, but the feature you could use is the alarm. First off, it's a gentle alarm. Ocean sounds, birds, other things. But the…
  • Women, being emotional creatures by nature, are far more likely to use emotion against men to get what they want. And are much better at it. Not meaning to generalize, because I know not all women are like that. But I've met, and been played by, more than my share.
  • Take your medication. For one, it's not a good idea to just stop those. As an anxiety and depression sufferer I can relate. I never really was able to deal with my weight until I could get a better handle on my depression. I was like, why bother? Also, antidepressants can only really be the cause of weight gain if they are…
  • Just make sure you compare the nutritional information that comes up on MFP with what is on the package. I've scanned a number of items and had it bring up an item with significantly different numbers than were on the package. Whoever scans the item first attaches that bar code to the item. If they don't put in the right…
  • I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea in 1990, weighing in at probably less than 200 pounds (don't remember, that was a few years ago). My initial treatment pressure was 13 cm/H20. As I gained weight (I went over 300 pounds), my treatment pressure increased until I was at Bi-PAP 20/13. I lost weight back down to 200 and was…
  • Get your thyroid checked, for sure. Also talk to your doc about getting a sleep study. Do you sleep alone? If you have a partner, ask them if they notice anything about your sleep. Do you snore? What you're describing with your fatigue was me before I was diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea.
  • I used one of these, about 4 years ago. http://www.quitkey.com/ You can get it for about $50 on Amazon. I'm not sure about the UK though. It's pretty simple, you pick a day to start, then smoke like normal. Every time you have a smoke, you push the little button. After a week, it starts giving you a timer. When you reach…
  • Does American need a Barbie? I mean seriously. We're in deep do do when the size and shape of a child's toy is a matter for the news, but most Americans probably couldn't tell who their governmental representatives are.
  • This post makes WAY too much sense to be on the internet.
  • I've never cared for fruit. And I don't see any real value in eating it. You can get all the nutrients you need from other foods. Except the occasional pie. Then it is OK.
  • I turned off the dish a few years ago. So much money nothing worth watching. I was down to the news and car racing. The news just pissed me off, and I couldn't justify the cost to watch cars go around in a circle. I had Netflix streaming at one point but when they split the service I cancelled the streaming part. There…
  • I don't have one, but everything I've read about the Flex indicates that it only goes in the wristband. I'm sure the Force is the same way. I have a One and I wear it clipped to my shirt pocket facing in, unless I'm wearing a shirt without a pocket. In that case, it's clipped high up on a pants pocket, also facing in. I…
  • When I lost a lot of weight, I had a lot of people tell me I had become too skinny. I doubt anyone was trying to sabotage me, it's just perception. Think about it. They've seen you heavy and that has become what their minds expect to see. They've adapted (maybe even subconsciously) to your appearance. Now, you've lost a…
  • I got mine on Amazon. I would say either the Force or the One, depending on where you want to wear it. The Flex is missing a few features that were deal breakers for me. It does not count stairs and it doesn't have a display, but mainly it does not have the activity timer feature. The One and the Force appear to be the…
  • As far as driving is concerned, I get a lot of steps while driving with mine. I have a One. It can mistake road bumps for steps. I drive a heavy pickup on really bad roads, so I can rack up a lot of steps. When I go to drive enough distance where I think it matters (45 minutes to town, for example), I start the activity…
  • I don't know how you define very low calorie, but for me it was 800-1000 cals. Occasionally going some over that. Details are in my profile and I'll leave that at that. I lost about 130 pounds in 9 months. For me, I did an 8 week transition where I added foods and increased calories. You could do it slower than that if you…
  • Interesting, though not really surprising when I think about it, is that they were much easier to do today when I did them right. The hardest part was actually getting back up off of the floor, basically. That is where I was losing my balance and such. I was able to do them this morning with 16 pounds in each hand and…
