  • I gained 30# in one month. I wasn't small to start with, got even bigger. I didn't replace all the gluten filled food gluten free foods. I am slowly trying to loose all that weight. I am about 2/3 of the way there.

  • I just need to vent a little. I was on 30 mg of Prednisone for days, then 20 mg for 5 days, then 10 mg for 5 days. I got off the pills on October 29. I made the choice to not weigh myself because of the Prednisone. Luckily, it hasn't caused me to gain more than a pound or 2. I just hate having asthma and having to be on…
  • In the US it is required to have (wheat) or some such wording written if it is from wheat. However, no such requirement exists if it is made from barley or rye (rarely done for either). Wheat is one of the top 8 allergens and has special rules for it.
  • You can only get Celiac if one of your parents has the gene. That being said, many people have the gene and do not get the disease. This has long been a mystery to the medical community. One doctor explained it as the lock (your body) and the key (the gene) have to engage to give you the condition. They don't know why some…
  • I don't knit something just because I lost weight. I go to SAFF or Stitches and get some new yarn (and then make something new)
  • Better Batter is another one to one replacement. I used it last Christmas and made Yorkshire Pudding. No one could tell it was GF.

  • In 18 months my son grew 9". This all happened within the first 24 months of going GF. It is hard to determine if it was just his time or if going GF had something to do with it. Currently DS eats between 2-3 boxes of GF cereal a week. He is almost 6'4 and about 170#. I think he is headed for another growth spurt because…
  • My son was diagnosed almost 4 years ago. His only symptom was the back of his teeth were rotting away. The pediatrician didn't even want to do the Celiac Panel. I had to push and thank God I did. It is hard at first. It gets easier as time goes by. Everyone else in the family should be tested. Celiac is a genetic…
  • Best pumpkin pie recipe I have ever done is to create a pumpkin pie EXACTLY as you have done before. Do not pour it into a pie crust, instead add 1/4 cup GF flour. Bake as usual. Most people do not miss the crust. I got this from www.glutenfreeeasily.com. Nicole at www.glutenfreeonashoestring.com has an AWESOME apple crisp…
  • My son has Celiac. Anyone with a first degree relative (parent/sibling or child) should be tested for it. My tTg numbers did not indicate Celiac, but I do have one of the 2 genes. I went GF with my son and determined I am gluten intolerant. Who knew that cutting out gluten would prevent kidney stones. I am also the person…
  • You can add me. My son had a biopsy in Jan 2009 and confirmed Celiac. I had the blood work and it was negative, but I was positive for the gene. I went GF with him and feel so much better. Please add me also.
  • I like Trader Joe's corn pasta. Their rice pasta is Tinkyada, but in a different package. The advantage is TJ's prices are usually better.
  • ktouton there also.
  • It depends on where you go. Some places are very conscious of cross contamination. A local pizza place near me has different sauces, cheese and toppings for people with Celiac. We have a sub shop near my work that has 2 "lines" to create the sub. One is for GF and one isn't. Some cuisines are more difficult than others.…
  • My guess about the pizzas is for people like Lady Gaga who are on the diet because they want to loose weight or some other non-medical reason. I know most of the 5 Guys I go to ask if me if there is a medical reason for no bun. I can think of a few other restaurants who ask the same question.
  • With Celiac there is no anaphylactic reaction. Everything happens in the intestings. Some people have dermatitis herpetiformis, which is a skin condition and presents itself to people with Celiac. However, any contamination, no matter how small or slight, prevents healing and can cause damage if you have already healed.…
  • If you have a Trader Joe's near you they are pretty reasonable. Many times a health food store is a better choice than your local chain grocery store. If your child does have Celiac you need to take cross contamination very seriously. I have things like peanut butter and jelly lids labeled GF so people know not to stick a…
  • Celiac is an autoimmune disease. The body does not know how to handle the wheat and the villi (small, hair like fingers in the small intestine) become flat, blunt and do not work. My son was diagnosed with Ceiac (by biopsy) 3 1/2 years ago. He was almost 13 at the time. True Celiac affects 1 out of every 133 people world…
  • Sorry to burst your bubble, but as of right now there are no laws governing what can and cannot be labeled "gluten free" in the US. In Europe it is 20 ppm (parts per million). Not sure what the regulations are in Canada or anywhere else. My son was diagnosed with Celiac 3 1/2 years ago. After listening to all the symptoms…
