  • YMCA downtown. Otherwise, I walk everywhere.
  • This. Water is really helpful before meals and throughout the day. Also, are you tracking your protein intake? Generally, eating more protein fills you up for longer periods of time. If you eat a bowl of cereal in the morning, you're likely to be hungry again in a couple of hours. If you eat eggs in the morning, you…
  • It can be suspect, though many companies will disclose on their websites how their caramel color is derived. Also, remember that in the US, to be considered "gluten free," the product needs to have below 20 ppm of gluten...which could be enough to cause a reaction in some people. So it's tricky. I've never had trouble with…
  • I live in a loft downtown. It's pretty awesome. As for high school, well, I went to East Lansing. Kudos to anyone from around here who's heard of it, lol.
  • Wow...that's scary. It's good your aunt was around to look after you! The lactose thing is actually pretty common among celiacs. I had it too as a kid, then grew out of it around 7 or 8 years old.
  • Yeah, even longer in Europe. I was constantly sick as a baby, but fortunately, my mom is a family physician, so she was persistent. None of her colleagues could figure out what was wrong with me for almost two years, and then she ran into an old friend who was a GI doc, and he said he'd heard of this thing called celiac…
  • I'm not fat, old, or vegan, but I do have Celiac Disease! And, more importantly, I'm pretty freakin' awesome. So...feel free to add me :D Also, gotta ask...when you say "a Barney voice," do you mean Barney as in the big purple dinosaur, or Barney as in How I Met Your Mother? If you're referring to the latter, the more…
  • Welcome! There is a lot of support here, as well as recipes, etc. I've been gluten free for 30 years, so I have a pretty good idea of what's going on. Feel free to add me if you'd like to see my diary!
  • If you want them to roll better, and/or use them for quesadillas, heat up some oil on the stove and dip the tortillas for about 10-20 seconds. Dry them thoroughly. They'll be stretchier, and have a much better consistency. ...of course, the oil isn't really good for you, but it definitely makes them more palatable.
  • Welcome! I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease at age 2 (30 years ago now - yikes!), so I've been doing this for a long time. If you have any questions, this is an amazing support group. You can also feel free to ask me anything and I'll help if I can!
  • Thanks! I really like it. I live and work downtown, I've met a ton of really cool people (all from other places), and am really enjoying what this city has to offer!
  • Thanks for the reply! I'll follow up with my doc and see. Over the last 6-8 weeks I suffered through both the new super-norovirus and the flu, so I'm sure my levels have been all over the map. So, I may wait a month or two and then schedule the followup so I can see where I am. I'm also adopted, so it's really important…
  • I'm actually lucky in that my local store has a ton of affordable gf options, so I haven't ordered from these sites in awhile. I can't speak to the prices, but I seem to remember them being fairly reasonable: Kinnikinnick.com - they used to have a flat-rate $10 shipping fee, no matter how much your order, so I would get…
  • Hello, and welcome! Sounds like you've been through a lot--but you've come to a place of support and enthusiasm for health. Good luck on this journey, and remember--it's a marathon. Take it one step at a time (so to speak). Cheers!
  • That's a good one, I've always hated running. My worst is probably burpees. Nobody likes burpees.
  • Hi all! New to the group--I'm Paul. Weekends are tough. I do kickboxing three times a week and crossfit two days a week, so I generally take Saturday and Sunday off. For the most part I can maintain, but I'm sure it would be better if I could squeeze in a light run or some squats or something on the weekends. It's just…
  • This actually made me LOL. Nice.
  • Gluten free is SO much easier now. I was diagnosed at age two (in 1982), and really until Atkins got popular, it was nearly impossible to eat out. I'd ask for a burger without the bun and get those vapid stares and the inevitable, stupid question: "How are you gonna eat it?" Then it would still come with the bun, and when…
  • I try not to be married to the scale. That said, I weigh myself pretty much every weekday morning, just to see the effects of what I'm doing. Skip a workout, eat a huge meal, enjoy several adult beverages? Usually shows up on the scale the next day (by a pound or less). Still, it's important to weigh yourself at roughly…
  • Like another poster mentioned, Captain and diet (or Coke Zero) is a fairly low calorie drink, but keep in mind that there are about 60 calories per shot (1 oz) of Captain. So, obviously, if you have stronger drinks and/or many of them, those calories still add up. Another low-cal option is vodka and diet tonic or just…
  • I try to build up on protein in the morning, as I find it keeps me full through lunchtime. My typical breakfast is a nonfat greek yogurt, a banana, and a glass of milk. I also chow down on about a quarter cup of blueberries if I have them around. Obviously, if you're avoiding lactose, my routine won't work for you. But it…
  • Thanks--and good to "meet" you! So many people find health benefits to avoiding or limiting gluten. I don't think I'd advocate cutting it out completely unless there's a medical reason to do so, but I am glad that awareness and availability have increased drastically in recent years. Makes things SO much easier for those…
  • My typical breakfast consists of a banana, a zero-fat Chobani yogurt, and a glass of skim milk. I usually workout in the morning, so I eat the banana pre-workout, and the rest after. About once every week or two I'll have a bowl of Rice Chex instead. My mid-morning snack is a small handful of walnuts (about an 1/8 of a…
  • I'm a fan of New Planet and Omission, and even Redbridge will do in a pinch. I've never tried the Estrella Daura, I'll have to look for it!
  • YES! I forgot to mention that--I eat at least two sweet potatoes (big ones) a week. SO good for you, and tasty too!
  • I have Celiac Disease, and have been on a gluten-free diet since I was two. I've never had trouble with my weight, but I have always led a fairly active lifestyle, and spent more than a decade as a competitive swimmer. Probably the biggest benefit to a gf diet is that many of the easy unhealthies, like pizza, beer, etc,…
