If you honestly feel as though you haven't eaten more than usual, the only logical explanation would be water retention. How old are they? I have a feeling that's someting somebody very young would say. If that's the case I don't think you should worry about it (I understand that you are, but you know what I mean) because kids say really dumb things. And young teenagers as well, trying to assert themselves I guess

I'm 20, 168 cms (5'6?) and 55 kgs (121 lbs) and I've always used freedieting.com's calorie calculator (http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm) to see how much I need. According to them I need 1900 cals for maintenence when I exercise 4 days a week, and 1600 if I'm sendetary

http://i.imgur.com/jcjTX.jpg You could also drink a glass of full fat milk with every meal. If you're only looking to up your calories without any specifics I'd say it would be easier to drink them than to eat them

The hormones that help us relax when we're about to sleep also decreases appetite (which is why we wake up not feeling hungry even if we go to bed starving) so maybe you could try giving yourself more time to wake up before you try to eat? I don't know, it's just a guess :-)
