  • Don't believe the calories that the machines at the gym spit out. Or MFP for that matter. I have a HRM, and the results for me are very similar to those listed on this site: http://www.runtheplanet.com/resources/tools/calculators/caloriecounter.asp Especially when I average the two (distance and speed). But that's just me.…
  • Does this seem like what is happening? http://www.m.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/guide/sleep-related-eating-disorders If so, you should see a doctor.
  • I am not a doctor, but I am fairly well-versed when it comes to psych meds (been on many and done lots of research). Weight side effects (gain or loss) were not one of the common side effects from the Pristiq trials. Reduced appetite WAS one of the most common side effects, and you can deduce from that what you will.…
  • What is your body saying? Sometimes we mentally want to keep going, when our bodies are giving signals that they need a rest. If your body is still feeling good, go for it!
  • Yes, safety can be an important issue. I am a long distance runner (I'm not on MFP to lose weight) and I only do one HIIT session per week. The following day is usually cross training or active recovery. One doesn't have to be running, though. You can do it just as well on an elliptical machine or stationary bike which,…
  • No, it is a bad idea. You should go back to your regular routine. Restricting your caloric intake will only lead to more bingeing.
  • I was somewhat surprised to find out recently that you can in some ways target fat loss. Studies have shown that High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is not only great for lowering overall body fat, and in less time than standard aerobic exercise, but it is particularly good at reducing abdominal fat. Here are two such…
  • ^^ What she said! I might add, some medications are more likely to cause weight loss. And even if it might be common for people to gain or lose weight on a particular medication, you could do the opposite or your weight might stay the same! In fact, people with atypical depression (which despite its name is actually the…
  • I'll give you an example: St. John's Wort. Naturally occurring herb found readily in supermarkets and over the counter in chemists. Combine this with an anti-depressant and you're fast tracking yourself to Seratonin (Steven-Johnson) Syndrome which carries a high mortality rate. The same can happen when combining…
  • Are you about to have your period? I can gain anything from 500-800g leading up to my period.
  • This is not strictly true. Mix certain herbs with medications and you can kill yourself. Always check with your prescribing doctor first. Just because something is 'natural' doesn't mean that it does not have it's own side effects / downsides. Even psychotherapy has side effects!
  • Yep. I gained 6kg in 5 weeks on a combination of Zyprexa and Remeron despite NO increase on caloric consumption, very 'clean' eating and lots of cardio exercise. Oh and I'm not someone who ordinarily struggles with their weight and I have oodles of self-control, i.e. I didn't give in and overeat just because the medication…
  • Hmmm, I actually think I look smaller in photos than in the mirror.
  • A really large bowl of salad with some steamed chicken or turkey. All the fibre from the veg is super filling. Mix it up with different combinations of fruit/vegetables and low calorie / minimal dressings. If you keep coming up with different combos it won't get boring.
  • Getting only a few tablets at a time is an excellent way to handle it if you have concerns about dependency. One thing I have done in the past is have a loved one retain my medication, so I can take a small amount at a time but not be worried about running out. Hang in there. I'm sure you'll be fine. x
  • That's actually incorrect. A couple of meds I was on caused me to gain 6kg in 5wks despite NO increase in caloric consumption and an insane amount of exercise. Had I eaten any less I would have been a candidate for malnutrition. I used to have anorexia nervosa. Anorexia is not a choice, but I mention it to say that I can…
  • I was going to post that! To the OP: You won't really know how your body will react to a medication before you try it. SOME have a tendency to make people gain weight or reduce your ability to lose weight, but that doesn't mean that your body will react that way. In general, anti-psychotic medication (used a lot for…
  • Running builds leg muscles.
