Do you like beans? I make a pot of black beans once a week and we eat them with pretty much any meal. It adds a lot of protein into the diet without too many calories.

Shoes help a lot. I got fitted and have a pair of Brooks. I have never had shin splints with them but do get calf pain from time to time.

When I am in the hospital I usually gain 5 to 10 pounds in water weight. It normally comes off within a week. I would drink lots of water and try to at least walk everyday to move the fluid out of your body.
