  • Sneak the veggies in...like a mom would do to her children. Shred a carrot or zucchini and mix it in with other foods. I put spinach in fruit smoothies. Looks gross, tastes great though. There's V-8 splash juice that has veggies & fruit in it. Make it a goal to try at least 1 new veggie a week. Sugar snap peas and baby…

  • What about adding weight training into the mix? It doesn't have to be a crazy amount. I use hand weights. It helped me with a plateau. If you're not sure what to do with the weights, they have strength training dvds at a lot of libraries. I will do one while the kiddos are eating breakfast or in bed. (I have 6 kids.)
  • My 10 year old daughter rarely eats meat too. She's on the slender side though. The doc wants me to get her to gain weight, but hard when she's so picky. I can get her to eat trail mix (peanuts, raisins, M&Ms). She'll eat yogurt, string cheese, and hummus. Those are full of protein. She loves smoothie/shakes. I usually…
  • We'll also put on a music CD that has a fast moving beat & crank it up (Toby Mac is the kids' favorite at the moment.) The kids and I will dance. If our bodies are moving and heart rate is up, it counts! Of course the youngest child (2) wants to be held in my arms as I dance. oh well, I'll take what exercise I can get!
  • I recently checked Fit Family Fun Circuit with Tonya Larson from our local library. She exercises with her husband (who has a baby attached to him in a baby carrier) and 3 other kids, who look ages 3-9. They have short exercise segments, plus a free style section. All my kids (ages 2-12) will do it with me.
  • I have nut allergies too. I tend to snack on Weight Watchers String Cheese or a generic 50 calorie string cheese. Dannon has 80 Calorie Yogurt Cups, regular or Greek Yogurt. If you have an Aldis near you, they have a chocolate chip granola bar, only 100 calories, that's nut free.
  • Are you stretching after you exercise? Years ago, someone told me that when you exercise, lactic acid (or some acid) builds up in the muscle being used. When you stretch out afterwards, it spreads that acid out. If you don't spread it out, you'll be sore. Don't know how accurate that explanation is. I just know that I feel…
  • Yesterday, I made a fruit smoothie in the blender (frozen bananas, frozen blueberries, 1%milk) and threw in a cup of fresh spinach. It looked gross, but tasted awesome. 4 of my 6 children (ages 12-2) drank it too. My son (who doesn't like veggies) asked for 2nds. I've also made Kale Chips (recipes are all over the…
  • I'm big into the concept of companion planting. There are certain plants that grow well together. There are certain plants whose growth will be stunted if planted next to a certain one. For my tomatoes, I always plant basil and marigolds right next to it. The bugs that might eat your tomatoes will be repelled by the…
