  • Do what works for you - and supports your goals - no point following a routine that says do xyz if in doing that it doesnt work for you. I found out the hard way - through experimenting that I need to maintain a high protein level in my diet to keep the weight loss going - if I remained on my cals but eat a higher %age of…
  • Great result - knocking that sort of time off a run is a really good result !
  • Are you talking tinned or fresh tuna ? Most tinned tuna will be pre-events there should be a batch date on the tin that says when it was produced. For fresh tuna ask your fishmonger where it was caught.
  • Well done - awesome result !
  • Amazing - plus just what I needed when feeling demotivated - thanks !
  • NIce post - thanks for that - I think that BMI can be described as a very blunt brute force tool, for me to get to my healthy BMI I would have to go down to about 160 lbs which I think would make me look ill. Plus I would struggle to maintain it. I had aimed for about 200 lbs which was in the range this calculator gave me…
  • Did you measure yourself before you started ? If so have you lost inches - that is a sign that you are loosing fat but gaining muscle.
  • The long and short of it is that they need to want to change - if they dont then as much as you try to help them you are not going to get them to loose weight. If they are negative about diets and dieting then let them see the results that you achieve through your journey. Some people also like the attention that they get…
  • Great Idea - makes it easier for when you want to find something to eat - if you use the iphone then you can also add those recipes to an iphone app so you have a shopping list with you when you are out and about - then you have no reason not to cook healthy
  • Your weight can fluctuate over a week - which is why some people suggest weighing in only once a week or less frequently. Your body will also need to adjust to the new diet and exercise. You may be losing fat but putting on muscle so you might have a net loss of zero but be healthier, muscle is more dense so you will get…
  • Good question - I dont know if there is a limit to the number of friends you can have but I would think 2-4 weeks would be a fair time to allow them to at least check back in. What about if they are being negative all the time would you cut them straight away ?
  • Firstly I wouldnt weigh yourself everey day - stick to the eating plan you have set yourself along with regular exercise and weigh yourself only once a week. Your weight can fluctuate during the day and over a week you can gain and loose some weight. Choose a day and a time - I do Sat morning before breakfast and weigh…
  • You body fat measurement can be effected by dehydration - if you are dehydrated then it can cause the value to go up in error.
  • If you are not sure then measure the widest part, what ever you do keep measureing in the same place to compare them - really it doesnt matter too much if you dont measure the precise place as long as you know where you have measured and can repeat that measurement. If you dont have a tape measure then find clothes that…
  • Are you only relying on the scales to measure your progress ? If so then you could be hiding loss of fat by gain of muscle. For example - I lost 3 lbs this week, I also lost 1.5% of body fat - so over all given my weight I lost 6 lbs of fat and gained 3 lbs of muscle. Muscle is more dense than fat so I will get smaller,…
  • Hi, Can you turn on your sodium levels in your diary, it is one of the settings you can change - it could be that you are taking in too much sodium. Also are you measuring yourself as well as weighing yourself - if you are doing more exercise than normal and different ones then you could be losing fat but putting on muscle…
  • remember to reset your goals very time you checkin with a weight
  • You cals are calculated by taking your BMR ( what your body uses to function ) and multiplying it by a factor based on how active your lifestyle is. For me my BMR is 2500 and I have a sedentary lifestyle so that would be a factor of 1.2 giving me roughly 3000 cals a day. For 2lbs per week weight loss I deduct 1000 cals a…
  • There is a cardio activity called strength training - add in the time you do weights for as that as well.
  • Hi, For me I had to ask myself why I am wanting to loose weight - I want to be a smaller size - which will be more healty long term - I also want to re-learn healthy eating. So following that line of thought I want to loose inches - the pounds will follow ! Steve
  • Natural sugars are healthier than refined sugars so sugar from fruit is better for you than out of a packet. All food, be it fat, carbs, proteins, have the potential to become fats in your body. Fat is your the way you store an excess of food for leaner times. You need to use what you eat in a day - so if you eat lots of…
  • Starvation mode will kick in when you are eating about 1200 calories but it will vary from person to person. If I remember from my biochem lectures It isnt about the feeling you have when you wake up it is the way the body adjusts its biochemistry to deal with a period of lean times. Your metabolism can slow down and your…
  • Hi, If you dont mind - open up your food diary so we can see what you are eating - I would suggest more protien in a diet as it reduces hunger. But with out seeing what you are eating then I cant offer much more than that. Steve
  • I lost 27 lbs - dropped below 300 lbs. I have gone from 0 mins a week exercise to 500 mins a week . But for me the success of the month is gaining all my MFP friends who are helping me through this journey !
  • I log items separately unless it is obviously the same thing - such as a store bought sandwich. If in doubt you can just add up the calories and quick add them - so for a ham sandwich - check what the packet says for the bread, ham etc and add them up. Then you are likely to be reflecting what you have eaten.
  • Hi, Your body can detox or adjust itself when you change your diet, do you want to share your food diary so we can have a look and see if we can offer any advice, sometimes people cut back too much on one thing too quickly. Are you following any diet in particular ? Some people find that the first week of a particular diet…

  • Two things come to mind; 1). Have you been watching your sodium intake ? If you have too much sodium then it can cause you to retain water. 2). Measure yourself, dont get focused on the scales - the aim for me is to be smaller and healthier so if I loose inches by converting the weight of fat to the weight of muscle (…

  • I will be doing this - I decided last night I wanted to add some abs workout to help trim my tummy - I am loosing weight by not inches on my stomach.
  • Hi, I err on the side of caution - I eat my calories and then eat back most of my exercise cals but I also reset my goals every week when I weigh myself. Each pound or KG you loose will effect your base metabolic rate reducing it a little - so if you dont reset your goals then you will start to loose less weight. For me I…
  • If you are eating less calories then you Base Metabolic Rate then you can switch your metabolism in to starvation mode where it will slow it down. Eating more calories can kick start it back into normal mode so you may use more calories per day and start to loose weight.
