  • Hi, I'm in for Spring Fling...though a couple of days late. I've been so off track lately that this might just be the thing to help me get back into it and stay on it. I'm keeping my goals pretty simple to make it more about consistency and getting back into some better habits again. Nutrition: --log every day --hit my…
  • I find sabotage or unsupportive behavior (however you want to phrase it) tends to come from a lack of understanding and communication. When I sat down with friends or family and explained in really specific terms what weight loss meant to me, how much I had to lose, and the type of effort that that entailed, I found people…
  • I typically weigh in once a week. I used to weigh in daily, and I think I'm going to go back to that. I found it was much easier to rein in my eating or push myself to do more exercise when I was weighing in every day. I think it really depends on what works best to motivate yourself.
  • This whole butter v. margarine argument reminds me of another argument that happens a lot because I'm from New England: real maple syrup or fake maple syrup. I get flack for liking the fake stuff in that instance too. I grew up with margarine, not butter, so I never got used to the taste of butter.
  • In college I held 2 jobs that really made it easy for me to pack on weight. One was at a pet store and the other was at a gas station. The pet store was totally understaffed and so you'd always be asked at the last minute to stay later than you were scheduled for. I needed the money and was nervous about saying no. The…
  • Hey everyone! I would love to join. I have about 170 lbs to lose total. I've spent the last year and a half in therapy trying to work on the emotional eating issues. Since I feel like I have that a bit more under control, I'm trying to really give weight the effort it deserves and requires. Though most people struggle with…
  • I little late to this conversation, but here goes: 1. Lose 70-80 lbs by exercising at least 3 times per week, logging every day, and taking on a new exercise every quarter--though I'm rethinking the weight goal. mathematically it's doable, but I don't know if it's realistic. maybe i'll just focus on the logging and…
  • I don't find nutrition-specific books as motivating or helpful as weight loss memoirs--even when they deal with issues that I don't necessarily connect to on the surface (weight loss surgery or being 600lbs), they provide me with an "I can do this too" attitude.* Half-Assed by Jeanette Fulda * Moose by Stephanie Klein *…
  • It's not totally impossible, but it's not recommended and why put yourself under than kind of unnecessary pressure? Keep in mind that it took you 2 months to lose 13 lbs. That's 6.5 lbs/month--absolutely commendable, but also not the 10lbs you now seek. To lose that extra 3-4lbs takes A LOT of work, especially since as you…
  • I think it's partly people's tastes, what is maybe more accessible or easier for them to grab, and once you've built up a particular habit (in terms of comfort eating) it only increases the amount of comfort you get from that food because you've put that particular food on a pedestal. If you always reach for a cupcake when…
  • People have told me not to eat until 2 hours after my workout to get the full burn potential of the workout and others have told me to eat within 2 hours of my workout for the same benefit...Whether or not one is right is irrelevant to me. I know that if I don't eat soon after I work out, then I'm likely to binge later on.…
  • Take it from a fat vegetarian...eliminating meat doesn't mean you'll lose weight. Being a vegetarian didn't stop me from eating too many chips or ice cream and gaining over 100 lbs. Also, you'll still be eating those calories from meat but with meat substitutes (i.e. chick pea burgers, seitan, tofu). It's not like…
  • So glad to hear someone else expressing this same sentiment. I kept thinking, "why am I not losing weight? I'm doing everything that I can." I never realized how many excuses I made until I really paid attention to what I was saying.
  • HI! I have about 170 to lose total. I started last year and didn't have much success...had to work through a few things mentally before I could take on the challenge of losing weight. But I'm ready now. I've got my boyfriend on board and I'm logging everyday.
  • I agree with all of the above. Don't overthink what cooking is. You can cook easy meals with simple ingredients without getting fancy...some whole wheat pasta with low-fat alfredo sauce topped with steamed broccoli and mushrooms only costs about $6 total and lasts me and my boyfriend at least two meals. And it only takes…
  • I blog at http://www.sherambler.com, I've been blogging about weight loss more, but it's not the only thing I write about. I love reading about others' weight loss. It helps keep things in perspective. You can click on community/blogs and find some MFP blogs, too. I think there's usually a sidebar of popular and new MFP…
  • I'm not from Boston, but Southern NH...about 45 minutes from Boston. I feel like I rarely run into people even remotely close to me on here. Nice change of pace.:)
  • I have 170 lbs to lose total. It always helps to lean on people with similar goals, especially when there is so much to lose. Anyone can feel free to add me.
  • I'm still at the beginning stages of losing weight, but the best advice I can give comes from my own mistakes. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders with the weight loss already, so I apologize if you've already considered the following, but it's worth saying anyway. Set realistic goals. I don't just mean…
  • I'm sort of a professional student. BA in Creative Writing, MFA in Creative Writing, MA in Education and now I'm in a graduate program for a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. I'm hoping to parlay it all into a career in educational nonprofits with an emphasis on grant writing and development/marketing. Wondering whether…
  • Hi! I think that's a great goal...as someone who writes about her weight loss journey, I give this advice: Don't forget to make videos about the highs and the lows. When I started, I didn't want to admit when I gained weight or binged or whatever, but being totally honest about what it's really like to lose weight not only…
  • Like someone else said, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Are you upset at the calorie count? If it filled you up, 480 calories for lunch is not bad. I think my lunch today was right around there. If you hadn't intended on eating that many calories and were surprised when you logged it, try perusing the…
  • Personally, I think it's hard to just overcome that voice cold turkey (pun a little intended). Some people can do it. I can't. Try munching on substitutes to start changing or reducing the craving...granola and yogurt, low-fat chocolate pudding, orange slices drizzled in just a little chocolate sauce. Also, consider the…
  • My therapist suggested allocating rewards not for pounds lost but for hitting weekly or monthly targets that focused more on building that habits that would lead to losing the weight, like exercising 4 times a week, hitting 100 miles biked, staying within my calorie range 20 out of 30 days. It seemed to work better for me.…
  • I can totally relate--even the wanting to have babies as motivation part. I'm a bit in limbo--one foot in creating good habits and another foot in my old way of thinking and doing. I'm finally beginning to understand what it really means to take it one day at a time, which I think was my first big hurdle to overcome.…
  • If it were me, while being accurate about your calorie burn is important, I would spring for a piece of equipment before a HRM. Although, since you already seem pretty active, a HRM might be better for you so you can more effectively workout. I agree with everyone else about checking on craigslist, amazon and ebay. In…
  • Hi! I have about 170lbs to lose total. Feels like an uphill battle some days, but I'm trying to take it one day at a time. If you haven't already, try checking out the groups. There's a lot of great groups dedicated to having a big amount to lose and they provide great support for our specific goals. Good Luck!
