  • Getting my depression medication changed made all the difference in the world for me. Also, one binge won't make you gain a lot of weight. Just like the first weight you lose is water weight, that's the first weight you gain, as well. It'll come right off. Hang in there! :-)
  • I recently changed to just using a HR strap (Polar H7) with my phone. They connect via Bluetooth. Gets the job done, stores the data in the cloud, and only costs $55 or so, which relatively reasonable.
  • Exercise calories don't give you the "not eating enough" warning. As long as you eat 1,200, MFP doesn't care if exercise calories knock you back down. (I burned more than I ate yesterday, but I ate 1,200+, and got no hassle from MFP.) Certain nuts, such as almonds and pistachios, contain "good" fats and are also relatively…
  • I've gotten into a thing where I break up my meals over time. For example, lunch is vegetables, an entree, and a (medical) shake. But instead of eating them all at once, I space them. Stringing it out like that has proven to be helpful.
  • When I first started getting into shape (I'm fat again now, but still reasonably fit and active), I felt ridiculous and mock-worthy at the gym. I had to make a conscious decision that what I was doing was *so much more important* than anything a bunch of dumbasses at the gym might think. Once I got past that, a lot of…
  • Last time I was in serious weight-loss mode (3 years ago, when I dropped 110 lbs.), I had to make a conscious decision that I didn't really care what anyone else thought. Whether it was being embarrassed at how I looked at the gym, to having to adjust my social life--they were dumb, superficial things to care about, and I…
  • IIRC, the net weight includes the weight of the container. The nutritional info (number of servings * serving size) is the actual weight of the product.
  • I lost 110 lbs on diet and exercise. Your doctor is a fool.
  • Some days, you just go through the motions. The important thing is to keep on keeping on.
  • I used to feel that way. Finally, I realized: 1) Most people are too focused on their own work, anyway, to be paying attention to what I'm doing--I am not the center of the world's attention. :-D 2) If there are stupid people who want to sit there and judge me, it's really not my problem. Life's too short. Once I focused…
  • @Moxette: I'm kind of wondering that, myself. :-) I definitely want to build up to a century; I think I've probably got 60 miles in me at the moment. My secondary goal is not so much weight loss at this point (mission accomplished :-) ), but more body recomposition. I'd like to continue to bring down body fat % and drive…
  • Every time I hit a plateau, I powered through it by doing a ridiculous amount of cardio. Then the loss would resume.
  • >I've heard that some people have HRMs that don't do the calorie estimates for you, how do those people estimate the burned >calories during that people? See my post above.
  • Here's the calculator used by the medically supervised weight-loss program that I completed. http://www.hmrprogram.com/index.cfm/DietTools/Walk-O-Meter (Enter your weight on the left side, then click the "Calories for any Activity" tab on the right side.) Here's how I map their categories to HR: Low intensity: HR 60%max…
  • I just dropped 110 lbs in 7 months. Under medical supervision, though--I don't suggest doing that on your own. (I have one friend who did something similar without the doctors involved--it cost him his gallbladder.) good luck! :-)
  • @Koschina: I have a feeling I know what it is, but I'm afraid to get banned even if I PM you. It's pretty obvious if you think about it. ;-) Re: strangest food item found: I have the reverse problem: I've eaten a scorpion, but scorpion isn't in the MFP database.
  • One thing I've told myself that's been of some use: Anyone can gain 100 lbs. Not just anyone can lose it.
  • @CherryObebe: Thanks for the coconut water tip!
  • Yeah, what speakz82 said.
  • Thank you for this post. :-)
  • Thank you--I'll keep your sage words in mind as I get started. :-)
  • Thanks, everybody--I appreciate your thoughts (as well as your very kind words :-) )! @stronglikebull: > Starting Strength or Strong Lifts 5x5 I absolutely abhor weight training, but I'll check these out. Never say "never"... :-)
  • You can get potassium supplements, which is what I take. If you can get your MD to Rx them for you (assuming you've got insurance :-/), that will also make it cheaper. I've been getting them as an Rx, but understand them to be a bit pricey otherwise. They're huge and hard to swallow, but they give you a nice, 1500 mg…
  • All you can do is put away the day that didn't go well, and do better the next day. One good day will become three, which will become a week, and pretty soon the momentum will sustain itself. Good luck! :-)
  • I agree totally with MikeInAZ's comment about really only caring about HR when you're working out. Unless you're out there digging ditches or something the rest of the day, it's pretty much a non-issue. I paid something like $150 for the Garmin Forerunner 305 wrist GPS/HR strap combination last January. It's a fairly old…
  • (ignore--can't delete)
  • Joking aside, 9 trillion girls within a square mile of you, and you have to go for the one teaching your class? Go for one of the other 8.999999999999 trillion. The risk of awkwardness/messing up someone's job is higher than the probability of your getting lucky. :-)
  • Starting with the disclaimer that I'm not a medical professional--I only have my experience (and results) to speak from. I have the Polar FT60, which is a watch/strap set combination. I only use it at the gym. I also have two Garmin units with heart straps, which I use when out cycling. (One of them lives with the bike I…
  • This sounds like how everyone thinks the Starbuck's barrista is hot for them...
  • I've had potato-crust pizza for Passover, when Jews aren't allowed to have normal crust. It was pretty disgusting. Maybe you'll like it better than I did. :-) b
