When I travel for fun, I now reset my goals to maintenance. This allows me to have controlled fun ;) I agree with the other posters about food, but I think it's also important to keep goals realistic while travelling. Debbie

Big support, here! I haven't exactly been in the same boat as you, but as you know, I'm plateaued and am trying all kinds of things. I think that, when you started watching your calories you were quite overweight, and your body has changed dramatically (as has mine). I think this is a wise decision and if you want to post…

Thanks-- and one more question about protein. Do you guys know of any good protein powders that don't have caffeine in them? TIA (again)!, Debbie

You worry about chairs breaking when you sit on them :) This actually happened to a friend of mine. Your back shakes when you walk! :) Debbie

The only thing I would add to what others have written is that if you are very heavy and older (I'm 45) be really careful to stretch and not overdo it. I stretched and was "good" (ran 3X per week) and now I'm nursing a deep glute/hamstring injury even though I was careful. I had excellent shoes that I got fitted for. I…

My mom made a sweet potato thing for Thanksgiving that was low-cal and to die for. I think she got the recipe online. It had apple wedges, sweet potatoes, and I think some nutrasweet, but it was SO yummy. Good luck, Debbie

I don't know what the "best" way is, but I will tell you what helps me: 1) I lose slow and steady as well. Over the past 3-10 years, I have lost 37 pounds and I've kept it off. My goal is not weight loss, per se, but change of lifestyle. 2) during difficult periods (i.e., vacation, the holidays), I reset my goals to…

Boncharlie, There are some really great online (FREE) workouts that are short on (I think) bodyrock.tv. I can find the link when I'm home. All you need is an interval app on your phone (free) and sometimes you have to substitute on their workouts (for example, a dumbell for a kettleball). I think it's hard to get a good…

I have chronic upper hamstring problems (though I think they radiate from from my glutes. I think this because I got a massage once when they were sore and the glute massage seemed to REALLY help and be where the pain was. I also get pain in my hips that I seem to feel in my hamstrings. At any rate, I started off running…

I'll clap my hands for you!!! :)) When I was single, it seemed weird to come out, but I did, if the topic came up. Now I'm in a long distance relationship so it still occasionally seems weird except for people who know me well. My 11 yo son has a best friend down the street and I toy with the idea of coming out to his mom,…

I was going to post this same topic! We are having a small Thanksgiving at my mom's house. Most of my relatives are out of town this year and even my oldest son will be with his gf. My mom and I have committed to a small (as in number of dishes) low-ish in calories, Thanksgiving. We are only having about four small…

Same here-- I get a lot of support but most people say they don't have the focus. Debbie

I think that Vibrams (they are those toe-shoes) probably are the only shoe that won't get destroyed... they can be easily washed--- they are like water shoes. Others' opinions?

Pretty much accomplished mine! They even had Shipley's donuts at work and I didn't have one! :) Deb

I think what I find bamboozling about this whole thread is that, when I was a young tot, just coming out, there were only a few things you could "be". GLBT. Now, there are SO many terms (asexual is not a new term, I know) that it feels impossible to keep up with. :) How on earth to be culturally competent? :)) BTW, cheers…

LOL I have been watching ST:TNG with my son. I'd change teams for him! My vice is amazon.com. I only have about a drink a day and I'm not really a binge eater. Debbie

I also adopted two kids.... It's trying at times, but they have really changed me in ways (for the better) I could have never predicted. Best, Debbie

I read a great article in the NY Times about toe running-- it was an interview with the author of "Born to Run" who insists that toe running is best for not injuring yourself. Another triathlete friend of mine has changed her gait because of it. Best, Debbie

I think the group is great but I wish it would show up in my newsfeed somehow. The only rule I don't understand was something to do with using appropriate gender wording. Take care!

Great job, Soccer Chick!!! I have just a few, inexpensive things-- 1) an exercise mat 2) a 40 lb. boxing bag that I got on craigslist for 20 bucks 3) a few dumbbells 4) a cheapo HRM (omron) that works fine-- I just have to estimate my own averages 5) (most expensive) decent running shoes. Best, Debbie

Thanks again :)

(Doubting Thomas here). Are you sure? On amazon they seem to sell them separately... ??? Thanks :))

I have a question about heart rate monitors: I was looking for them, and some of the polars don't come with a chest strap (or don't appear to). Are you supposed to buy them separately or do some just not use a chest strap? Are the ones without a chest strap as accurate? Thanks, Debbie

I guess I'm just wondering (and truly, not trying to be oppositional) that if everyone complains about those last 10 pounds, maybe they are shooting too low? Maybe our bodies are trying to tell us something? *shutting up now, I promise :)

SCREAM!!! :)

I realize that my reply will get lost with the others but I have a serious, and non-inflammatory question: Why not just bag it and call it good? The reason I ask is bc I did some research and there really is a weight we are "meant to be" (I can't recall what it's called-- it's not called "set point" anymore, but it's a…

I'm serious here: wear something you're willing to lose. Have you been? I haven't competed but I went to one and you should have seen the pile at the end. The shoes were all but destroyed. I am about to do the warrior dash and will wear an old pair of my favorite running shoes. I saw people in vibrams saying they did the…

Awesome job!!!!! I feel proud bc I'm you're "friend" lol! Debbie

I read a study that said that people who KEEP weight off tend to be structured and regimented. I include exercise in my daily routine. You probably brush you teeth every day, right? Add exercise into your routine (perhaps you have done this, already) and I think it helps. Best, Debbie

Ohhh.. one last thing. My OWN successes motivate me. One thing that helps is I have a scale that measures fat percentage. Sometimes when I plateau, I notice that my fat percentage is going down, so I don't get so hopeless. That scale helps. Best, Debbie
