I planned my exercise today to include gardening - prune the overgrown lilac bush. I almost let it slide - but then at 5pm reminded myself this is one of the longest (and nicest) days of the year. I got it done - and got 5 bundles of branches out for pickup tomorrow. And it reinforced that if I log the exercise I plan to…

I did Google NSV a while back and figured it out (although the Vancouver group looks interesting  ), but I got stuck on *kitten* and had to ask for help! Thanks to those who shared that it's the auto-edit for questionable language - as in, "got my fat *kitten* off the couch and started moving!" And speaking of…

Yes, you can! OK, it took me reaching my mid-50's before I let go of "what will others see" and decided upon "what will I enjoy doing" - but it works (and swimming is great exercise). Don't short change yourself! My NSV today - on vacation, brought last year's shorts / beach clothes, and it's a good thing I brought a belt…

As the saying goes, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Great job motivating your folks! And THANK YOU to all who post here - your stories are truly inspiring! My NSV - just got back from a mini-vacation to Gatlinburg TN. Did some hiking in the Smoky Mountains, logged all my food (even if I did go off plan), and…

I'm enjoying tomato season more than ever this year! Walk outside & grab 2-3 fresh tomatoes, chop them up & add fresh basil, salt, pepper, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes - good for breakfast, lunch or dinner! And I love the way my shorts are sliding on without undoing the button.

I buy bags of the Hershey Mini chocolate bars as a treat for my mom (in memory care). The bag sits right by the door - and I managed to ignore it the whole time. OK, there was one piece of dark chocolate - last one in the bag, and Mom's least favorite - but I logged it!

I did some meal planning for today, and changed my dinner plans. I was going to include some leftover casserole - but it was putting me over my calorie, fat, and sodium goals. SO . . . it guess it will still be good leftovers for tomorrow! I'm not always this diligent in meal planning (or sticking to daily goals!), but I'm…

Yes, it does get easier, but you'll have "speed bump" days, too. You've had a lot of great advice; I'll share what helps me. 1) Don't skip breakfast & lunch; be sure to include protein - when I miss this, I find I'm more likely to start snacking in the evening and lose control. 2) Plan all meals, not just dinner - I hate…

There are no small NSV's!! It's like horseshoes and hand grenades - close counts! And changes that you can see in under two weeks are worth sharing. The day-to-day accomplishments are just important (and motivating) as the big finish / goal line moments. Thanks to all who share their successes and keep inspiring us not to…

I cheated and googled "NSV" to find what it stands for ;) - I guess it was originally a Weight Watchers thing. But while we're on the subject - even google couldn't help me figure out what *kitten* means. I've seen it a couple times - best one I can remember was something like "a**", as in get off the couch and move yours.…

Quinoa tabbouleh salad - lots of ideas for this at food.com. Costco makes a great one that includes mung beans - here's a link to that recipe: http://www.food.com/recipe/costco-quinoa-salad-498147 (I just buy it in the deli section LOL!)

"Salsa Chicken" - a favorite of mine for the slow cooker; quick to fix, if you don't mind starting it ahead 4 boneless chicken breasts (around 2 lbs) 1 envelope taco seasoning 1 jar salsa 1 can chopped green chiles or jalapenos (optional) Combine in slow cooker; cook until chicken will shred easily (around 4 hrs). Remove…

Yesterday, I forgot to make slow-cooker chicken I had planned, and was out late running errands. I thought about picking up pizza on the way home (my major downfall), but instead opened a can of tuna. Even better, I mixed it with pickle relish and fennel seed - who knew tuna didn't need mayo to taste good!!! - and didn't…

You rock! That's the winning attitude that will take you through the long haul. You can do it! My NSV today - I had to hustle out of the house early. Instead of just skipping breakfast or visiting the local drive-thru, I grabbed a couple Fiber One bars to eat on the road. A better choice than I would have made in the past!

I have two today: 1) I went to the grocery store, and bought only one thing that was not on my list - fresh blueberries were on sale! 2) My blood pressure has been in the normal range for over a month. In June, the top number was between 130 to 143. It has been under 130 since early July; this morning was 120 / 78! (My…

Here's a chant I use when I'm on the elliptical or treadmill: I can do it. I can be strong, I can be fit. I can be fit, I can be strong; I did it before, I'll do it again.

I love it! There's something so empowering about tackling these challenges yourself! And that successful feeling carries over into your attitude toward everything else you attempt (like healthy food & exercise). Well done! So here's my NSV today - I'm starting to enjoy the fresh tomatoes from my garden. A handful of…

Too bad you can't rate them on a "Rotten Tomatillos" scale! They'd definitely get a low score from me!

I've found a really good organic, whole-grain bread that has sunflower seeds on the crust. I toast that, and top with a slice of Havarti cheese (very soft & mellow). I splurge by putting cinnamon creamer in coffee. Often add fruit (banana / tangerine / apple) to round out the meal.

Zucchini Tomato Salad (all measures are approximate - suit yourself!) 1 small-medium zucchini 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes 1/4 cup feta cheese 2-3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar Slice zucchini thin using a mandolin or grater. Combine ingredients in bowl & toss. Chill if desired. Serve as a salad or cold side dish.

Going down the stairs the "normal" way (instead of sideways / 2 feet on each step) because my knees are feeling so much better.

Hi - Great job losing 16 so far! I'm in for the long haul, too - I'm down around 15lbs since mid-May, but it's slowed a bit and I also would like to lose around 60 more. I hope that sharing support & feedback with others will help me keep moving. My solution on going to the gym - I signed up with a personal trainer. I've…

I'm in the same boat - got a bad report card from my doctor last year, did a lot to improve so now I'm about halfway to my goal. I'm starting to backslide - I'm not planning meals or counting calories as well as I did before. Let's hope that joining this site is the motivation we'll need to take it the rest of the way! Sue
