• Today I did elliptical, bicycling, and weight lifting along with some yoga. I'm still going a little easy after my long run on Saturday. I have one more idea for a recovery technique that my husband has found really helpful. He was having a lot of trouble with pain in one of his calves. A track coach told him about about a…
• Thanks for all the advice about recovery. I do a lot of stretching, I take a nap, and I do the feet up on the wall thing too. Today I did an hour of treading water. My neighbor is a track coach, and he said that it helps runners to get their legs back. It really did help! This is the first time in my training I've been…
• I hate running by scary dogs! I'm glad you weren't hurt! Today I ran 18.5 miles (my most ever!) The marathon training is getting tough! My legs are really tired and sore now. Hopefully they'll feel better soon.
• I had a 7 mile tempo run today. Have a great day everybody.
• Today was a cross training day for me. I lifted weights, bicycled for 45 minutes, and did yoga. One thing that I think is really helping me stay injury free during training for the marathon is that I'm following a three run per week program with one speed run, one tempo run, and one long run. I'm also doing yoga every day…
• Today was a speed workout for me. 20 minute warmup one mile fast--followed by 400m walking two miles fast--followed by 800 m walking 2 x 800m fast--each followed by 400 m. walking 10 minute cool down It was a hard, but good speed workout. Have a great day everybody.
• I did a half marathon in June, and I bought a shirt that said, "If found on ground, drag over the finish line!" Thanks for all the encouragement everyone!:flowerforyou:
• Hi everybody! Today was my long run day. I went 17 miles (my longest run ever). It took me over three hours, but I did it! I'm proud of myself and all, but toward the end of my run I couldn't help but think that I would still have nine more miles to go to complete a marathon. I started wondering if I'm going to be able to…
• Kechie, I think you did great, especially when it's so hot and humid there. It's been fairly warm here too (but nothing like last week ). I had a speed workout this morning also: One mile walking to the track, One mile warm-up (11 min.) Two sets of 4 x 400m with 90 seconds in between each 400. (My times ranged from 2:02 to…
• I had to do a nine mile tempo run today. It was already about 75 degrees outside by the time I wanted to go, so I decided to go do it at the gym. I hate doing nine miles on a treadmill! It's so much harder mentally than running outside. But it was better than getting heatstroke. By the time I finished it would've been…
• One other idea is to get arch supports for your shoes. Last year my knees hurt and I got arch supports and it really helped. :glasses:
• Today I did weight lifting, cycling, and stretching. It's a scorcher in Oregon today (forecast says over 100 degrees the next three days or so!) Have a great week everyone.:flowerforyou:
• It's interesting that you ask that because my daughter and I were talking about it after our run. The truth is that we went over our calories a little the day before because we made pasta for dinner in preparation for our long run (a little carbo loading). We were talking about how if you counted from the evening of Friday…
• Congratulations Willywonka you rock! :drinker: I know exactly what you mean about the elation. I always dread the long runs, but feel so great afterwards. When I got home today, my husband was watching the end of an iron man competition on television and they were showing all the people who finished, including a 72 year…
•
So I don't know how I'm the problem but if I am I would like to what I'm doing wrong.
I'm sorry, that probably sounded pretty harsh, which probably wasn't fair. I do realize what a tough choice it can be to set clear boundaries for an adult child. I just really believe in the philosophy that we teach…
• I had knee problems, and stretching really helped me too. Also, you could take glucosamine with chondroitin, which is for joint pain. One other thing to try is treading water after a jog. That helps me too.
• Today was my longest run ever! I went 15.5 miles. It was a beautiful run along the waterfront of my city on a beautiful day. I felt pretty good until the last few as it was getting warm by then. I still finished though. I'm training to run my first marathon in October. I've run several half-marathons and I've done one…
• I say tell her if she wants to live by her own rules she certainly can, just not while living your house. As long as she's under your roof, you make the rules. Once she is financially on her own, she can consider herself an adult. The fact is that adults pay their own bills. I'd say she can choose to totally be an adult if…
• Hi everyone! I'm a Shot Block girl myself. I hate the gu, but love shot blocks. I have also put some gatorade powder in my Nathan water bottle, but not enough so it really tastes like Gatorade. Just enough so I get a few electrolytes. Today I did a speed workout, which should have been easy, but for some reason it felt…
• I had a fun and challenging weekend. Saturday I did a ten mile run including one killer hill, and then today I walked 15 miles in a Relay for Life event. My feet are tired tonight!
• I agree that after a while your feet toughen up so you don't get blisters as much. I went for a pedicure a week or so ago and told the lady not to touch my callouses because it took me a long time to get them! She laughed at me, but I was serious. I have Saucony shoes right now, but I was having trouble with my knees until…
• Hi Kechie, Things are pretty crazy so I haven't posted much lately. My grandbaby (Kya) is great! Grandbaby number two (also a girl) is due in about three weeks, so that's pretty exciting. I've done two half-marathons so far this summer and (heaven help me) I'm training for the Portland Marathon in October! So far my…
• I was having trouble with "runner's bladder" last year, so I looked it up and read up on the condition--that's how I know it's called "runner's bladder." What I read was that it's caused by the walls of the bladder rubbing together and getting inflamed. It only happens when your bladder is completely empty. I was…
• You said that you just weren't invited to your friends' activities. Maybe you could try inviting people to do something with you instead of waiting to be invited. Take the initiative and try to create the life you want instead of hoping it will come to you. If you invite people and they turn you down, then you might need…

• I trained for a half-marathon using a program that had me running only three times per week. Each week I did one run that was a speed workout, one was called a tempo run (medium length at my tempo speed), and the third was a long run at a little slower speed. It worked great. On the off days I did weight training and…
• I ran 10 miles on a two-mile loop jogging trail around a beautiful golf course in Portland, Oregon. I had to run around the trail five times, and there's a pretty good hill about midway. The last two miles about killed me for some reason. I ran eight miles the last two weekends, but the ten felt like so much more. I…
• I ran 6 miles this morning in the dark. For some reason I really love running in the dark! Weird, huh?
• How did everybody do today? I got up at 5:00 and went to the gym to lift weights and do a speed workout. I ran three minute intervals of jogging and running (5.5 mph and 7.0 mph.) It was a good start to the day. Hope everybody else had a good run today!:flowerforyou:
• I did elliptical and weights on Saturday, ran eight miles on Sunday, and then elliptical and weights again this morning. I'm happy tomorrow is a day off for exercise for me because my body could feel it this morning!
• It sounds to me like you did things just right by starting off on the treadmill and working your way up to running outdoors. Just keep working on it and it'll get easier. The other thing I notice besides that the treadmill is easier, is that I ALWAYS run faster in a race than I ever do during a daily workout. It doesn't…
