Hi Friends,

I'm signed up for a 10 km 8 weeks from now...

Any tips on how to "train" - I want to do it with a good time.

Thanks for any tips!

I like Hal Higdon's training site. Runner's world probably has some good training programs too.

Good luck! Let us know how you do.

How much can you run now? I did Couch-to-5K to run a 5K but now I'm working on running a 10K and I haven't found any programs as good as that one.

I just try to up my time running by 10% each week and also I do a coached track workout (intervals) with my triathlon club once a week to work on my speed.

    Thanks Annjkh...

So, I checked out the Hal Higdon site, and downloaded the 10 K Training Guide for novices! I love it! You basically do short runs which build to long runs (about 2 per week) and then on the other days you do strength training or cardio. You rest one day per week. I'm going to start today!

MacMadame - you might like this trainer, and you probably don't have to do the novices one, you could do an more intermediate training schedule.

I'm glad it worked for you. I use his site for all my race. Have fun training! It is such an accomplishment when you finish the race.

Were you surprised that you only run a few times a week with the program? On the cross training days, can I still do the treadmill at the gym, or should I try some other class or cardio equipment?

    Thanks!

I trained for a half-marathon using a program that had me running only three times per week. Each week I did one run that was a speed workout, one was called a tempo run (medium length at my tempo speed), and the third was a long run at a little slower speed. It worked great. On the off days I did weight training and sometimes elliptical, but I think the running three times a week really prepared me without injury or boredom that running more often might have done. Good luck on your 10K.:flowerforyou:

That's what I am using for my half marathon training. It's called the FIRST program and you can check it out at runnersworld.com They have other plans there also. Good luck!! :flowerforyou:

Thanks everyone! I'm a few days into training and loving it! It's almost easier than my usual exercise routine, in that I know what to expect, and I can look forward to some days being lighter and some being harder.

I liked training too. It helps that running is as much as a mental activity as it is physical. When you know what you have to do, it's easier than going to the gym and trying to decide then what you want to do.
