  • Lol yes I think a bit mental to run a marathon..and do it again. Thank you for your replies, they really helped settle the head :) which is as well because I am off the rd altogether with a nasty chest infection
  • wouldn't you think? no I did a 10k a week before the marathon and it was a diaster. Well not a disaster but nowhere near a pb. Completely different training - lots of medium long runs, long long slow runs, hill work, some intervals, but def not an increase in speed. I wish
  • I had a similar experience on my second marathon!!! my brother rang I was at mile 23 I had a good old gossip with him, it passed those scary high miles for me, I bounced up to the finish line in great form :) ( course he thought I was nuts)
  • I like company but it can be hard because as you say you are either holding someone back or vice versa. I have a great friend who came out for a few long runs with me earlier in the year. We had great craic it was like a three hour counselling session lol we never stopping chatting and putting the world to right. My last…
  • Class, I love it! you said it perfectly 'beautiful misery'. Lucky you had great support in your companions; they obviously had great support in you too. Well done.
  • Jillian Michaels is fantastic, my circumstances have changed I can't get out running as much as I would like so am having to improvise. Lots of runs with kids on bikes/ flickers and JM in the kitchen with me pushing the dogs off me with my kids laughing at me. One of my neighbours runs alot of marathons, she has just…
  • Irish its the waterford whisperer. God yeah work away with the joggies to the interview, best of luck :) I have a wedding coming up going to wear mine to it
  • Fair play to you! someone here posted before about pikes peak I was nearly in tears reading it! looking foward to hearing how you get on. Saw another post mention a challenge in Texas, so here is one from Ireland, 4 marathons in 4 days on the Inishowen peninsula, which is a very wild and beautiful part of Donegal. I would…
  • Trail half marathon somewhere nice and scenic... can't beat it
  • woo hoo congrats! delighted it went well
  • Do let us know how you get on! I'm doing my first ten k since last August tomorrow, would love to pb but more importantly gotta finish smiling :)
  • welcome to the group! so much support and advise you will love it. Make sure and post and let us know how you get on on your half
  • Hi all thanks so much for the replies! I am also doing hill runs in between the speed work etc. I I had a look at my splits the last long run was done a full minute faster than last years long run pace , it felt comfortable so I just went with it. I may go back to keeping an eye on my watch. I had a 20 mile run planned for…
  • woo hoo thats brilliant! good woman yourself bet you feel brilliant. Delighted for you
  • Great you bounced back so quick! best of luck with your race. My first half was just over a year ago, I introduced myself to the 2.20 pacer had great craic with him then lost him 5 mins into the race, near the end of the race when I was flagging the 2hr pacer told me to push on & get in under 2hrs which I did. My advice is…
  • Hi i love beyonce bruno mars, tina, bit of taylor swift. Can't beat pitbull though he is a mucky little pup. For long runs I downloaded some move sound tracks - braveheart, last of the mohicans, some of Gladiator. Big soaring tunes and nice scenery to distract me and keep me steady.
  • Such a good thread! Some really fantastic replies. I'm like you and would be plagued with doubts especially coming up to my first ( and so far only) marathon. To me a marathon isn't a race as much as an endurance test and about as mentally challenging as physically. Knowing I was going to doubt myself I got lots of advice…
  • Hi Wendy, I have another half this sunday I'm kinda glad I think if I waited too long for another I would lose my nerve altogether. Definitely a head thing for me, it was all over the place running has kept me sane this past year I just didn't do myself any favours on saturday. Thanks for replying, I am sorry for your loss.
  • ah congratulations delighted for you!
  • I definitely don't want to go back there again! I was thinking about it my pre race routine was slightly off - I normally go mountain running once a week but the week before the race I did two 6 mile runs on the mountain. Then the day before instead of doing a slow run I did some walking and cycling. Also I fired the…
  • Doug I'm more about selfies then splits lol. I'm only kidding ( well abit) I didn't wear a hrm I do sometimes training but sometimes feel strangled by it even when I loosen it. I threw my watch in the corner will look at the splits when I get home from work. Thanks for the replies my mantra for the week is going to be '…
  • sorry forgot to add, I did a half last year where they had lovely fruit cake at the last stop - 9 miles in. I really enjoyed it and shot off afterwards. if I could figure out a way to have fruit cake on a long run I would :)
  • On a half marathon I normally take one or two gels, marathon training I experimented taking more gels but could only ever take 3. Sure enough on my one and only marathon to date I took three gels and tons of water. I also had pistaschio nuts & jellies on me. However I did feel I hadn't enough - I eat literally every two…
  • Be a king - it is worth a sucky 10 miler in the heat to get that title and bag, I love the bag much better than a t shirt.
  • Be a Crab King? of course you can! I was thinking that before I read your post, for such a title anything is possible! after reading your post I definitely think you should go for it. Best of luck and let us know how you are getting on.
  • I'm all about the scenery too, I did the causeway coastal half marathon last year loved every second of it! would love to go back and do the full this year. Also have my eye on the Loch Ness marathon, I love the scottish highlands so would love to do a race up there.
  • lol the glee is great its the fact I have gotton carried away with myself before in the past and ended up *kitten* over head on the ground bleeding and cursing :) not very dignified on the plus side I am way more sympathetic to my kids when they fall over - it really does hurt!
  • I was off yesterday had planned to go up the mountains near us with a friend. She rang and said will we do a step class instead it was so windy out, I was like not a hope we are going up the moutain...then I walked the kids to school lol we did the class. It was good but not as good as getting out running. So this morning…
