  • Oh, and, if you have 5k and 10k races near you, throw a few of those in with your training. If you have never run a race, the shorter distances will give you a feel for what race day is like. I like to plan a 5k and a 10k that coincide with the miles I need to run on my training plan. They are mini-goals that keep me going…
  • I suggest finding a good run/walk training method. John Bingham and Jeff Galloway both have books and online guides detailing this method. Depending on the race, you might be able to do a run/walk the entire time and not worry about speed (beware of the sad wagon picking up the stragglers!). I took a long time getting…
  • I was thinking about this the other day when I saw two tall women--my height of 6'--and they were soooo thin that they looked sickly. I am at 18/20 now, down from 26/28. I would be happy with 14 but 10 or 12 would make it possible for me to shop in some stores that don't go over a size large.
  • And, keeping your blood glucose in check can help you avoid spikes and dips which can make you feel hungrier than you need to be.
  • I took diabetes classes about 10 years ago and, when calculating carbs that would raise blood glucose levels, we subtracted the fiber carbs from the carbs. The calories are the same but it impacts your blood glucose differently.
  • I told my weight loss doctor that I was looking at a hysterectomy and he advised me to keep my ovaries because of the menopause effect. He said it is more difficult to lose weight after menopause. I see it with my aunt who has been trying to lose weight forever. She runs three miles a day and eats a low cal diet (under a…
  • I have worn New Balance for years. I get one that reduces pronation and I use an insole insert for extra support. You could go to a running/walking specialty shoe store and talk to the people who work there. They can help you find a shoe that works for you. It might cost more than the Reebok Classic but you won't regret…
  • I have been told eating a little protein in the evening, before bed, will help regulate blood sugar overnight (some diabetics have high morning blood sugar because the liver starts kicking out glucose after fasting for a few hours.) I have also heard that a little carbohydrate before bed can help you sleep better. Some…
  • My aunt is convinced that it is bad for you. That it bulks you up. My protein shakes have whey protein in them and I have lost very little muscle with my weight loss. Almost none of my weight loss has been muscle. If that's bulking up, I'll take it.
  • http://www.bikemania.biz/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=NuMetrex_Bra This looks like it could solve the chafing problem.
  • I have been seeing a specialist who deals with weight loss and nutrition and he has me stand on a machine that calculates percent of body fat and metabolism. Out of the 61 lbs I have lost, only 2 lbs have been muscle. He says they usually expect a more significant muscle loss but, because I work out and eat a lot of…
  • I get to the gym at 5:45 or 6:00 am, right after waking up. I don't eat before or for an hour or so after my workout. I don't think it's a good idea to do what I am doing but it works for me. When I used to wake up at 5:30 am to run, I would eat a Cliff mini bar--about 100 calories. If you go over by 100 calories on a day…
  • And, they just introduced tropical flavor. Can't wait to try it!

  • I LOVE the chocolate Shakeology. I would have it every day but it so expensive! One of my friends is a Beachbody coach and she is trying to convince me to become a coach even if it is just for the discount on Shakeology. It is the most satisfying and filling shake I have tried and I have tried a lot of them! One of these…

  • Diagnosed with it about 4 years ago although some doctors had always suspected it and other doctors think it is just my weight. I am going with the highly qualified research and teaching UCLA doctor's diagnosis. She also diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism--mine is caused by my pituitary not stimulating the thyroid.…
  • I wonder if it has more to do with a dramatic weight loss than the drastic calorie reduction? It seems that people who lose a bunch of weight, through not so extreme diet and exercise over a longer period of time, have been able to go off diabetes medications. I think I would have to lay around for 8 weeks to survive! So.…
  • How low carb are you talking? If you are having a few servings of starch a day--like one or two with your three meals--I have been able to cut things down by using sandwich thins instead of bread and flatout wraps instead of tortillas. I will usually go for whole wheat pasta or brown rice when I can. Just a half cup of…
  • I totally share things on MFP that I would NEVER share on FB!!
  • My nutritionist recommended it.
  • Maybe it's a normal butt thing :) I have always had a flat *kitten* and, especially when I am thinner, my butt bone is more prominent. All that standing and pedaling has got to be turning your butt into buns of steel!!
  • I have been eating Luna bars. They are under 200 calories with around 9 grams of protein. Target's Market Pantry has some yummy bars for under 200 cals with 12 grams of protein. Kashi makes a good bar--go lean crunch bar--150 calories and 8 grams of protein. I eat a protein bar every afternoon. It satisfies me and I think…
  • I had ankle problems and went to a podiatrist who told me to stretch my calves. Apparently tight legs can pull on the ankle ligaments and tendons and cause ankle pain. Maybe you stretch already...
  • I used to be a vegetarian and am a guiltily omnivore now (some day I will probably go back to veg or at least pescatarian). I had lost 85lbs as a vegetarian about 4 years ago. I was chatting with some of my vegan friends who bump up their protein with protein powder. Whey protein is vegetarian and you can feel good about…
  • Old Navy is a loser's best friend. You can keep buying smaller and smaller sizes without spending too much. And, getting to a 29 is great, too!
  • I always use the machine number--it is usually lower than MFP. I figure it knows how hard I am working where MFP doesn't.

  • Oh, I also add a packet of Truvia for a little sweetness. Bottom line, I think if your sugars are coming from whole foods, it's not as bad as added sugar. Sugar is sugar but it is better to get your sugar from fruits and whole foods rather than sugar added to foods. I guess getting some nutrition with your sugar is a good…
  • I haven't been tracking my sugars, really. I pay attention to carbs and fiber, though. Every morning I have a smoothie: 2 scoops Aria Designer Whey protein powder, vanilla flavored and about a cup of frozen unsweetened fruit. Strawberries, mango, pineapple, mixed berries, peaches or a combo of any of them. And about a cup…
  • I have had one. My Dr. said every 5 weeks would be enough. It has been a couple of weeks and I still feel better than I did before the shot but not as good as the days right after it. I wish there was a self injecting shot--like an insulin pen or something.

  • I am always looking for good cookbooks that I can just cook from and not worry if I am going overboard. Love my Ellie Krieger So Easy cookbook.
  • I have an old Weight Watchers scale that I bought at Costco about 4 years ago. It is right on track with the fancy scale at my gym plus it calculates the weight you have lost (or gained). I have only had to replace the battery.
