Ok so I am watching biggest looser and Jillian said you can subtract the grams of fiber from the carbs and get a "true" carb amount. Is this cheating? I have started to worry about carbs but most things I eat is full of fiber too. Can I do this and be successful? OMG please tell me this is the loop hole blessing from Gawd! :OP

why are you worrying about carbs? get an adequate protein intake (1g of pro per lb of lbm_, around .3g of fat per lb of bw and maintain a caloric deficit0
-
yes, you can subtract fiber from carbs for net fiber.... but minimize bread, rice, pasta, .... protein & vegetables!!!0

I took diabetes classes about 10 years ago and, when calculating carbs that would raise blood glucose levels, we subtracted the fiber carbs from the carbs. The calories are the same but it impacts your blood glucose differently.0
-
As far as impact on blood sugar, yes, you can. My SIL is diabetic, and I know that she does this when reading nutrition labels in determining amount of carbs she can have. Fiber, sugar alcohols, and such don't impact blood sugar because of how they are digested (or not digested). They call the "new" number net carbs.
However, if you are eating a well balanced diet, getting most of your carbs from whole-food sources (fruits, vegetables, whole grains), and don't have any diabetes issues, you don't really need to worry or obsess over your carbs, net or total.0 -
I agree. As long as I hit my target protein ## for the day (which for me is 60-80 grams/day), I allow myself unlimited fruits & veggies & I honestly don't worry about carbs. They are just fluff. If I want a baked potato or french fry I don't stress about it. 99.9% of the time I come in under on calories for the day. It's worked for me.0

Thats how Atkins calculates carb intake as well I think...Because the fibre makes the carb release more slowly...Doesn'tmatter. Work on your protein and keep your white colored carbs in check you'll be fine.0

And, keeping your blood glucose in check can help you avoid spikes and dips which can make you feel hungrier than you need to be.0

I believe it used to be 5 more fiber and you subtract 5 of the carbs, they've changed it now and it's apparently 3 carbs you minus out. No clue why the change was made.
Again not a loop-hole but what some do. I personally don't pay any attention, I log my food from the labels and let it go at that. I recall classes that taught that over the years and I think I did it for a short bit and then simply no longer thought about it.
You can read more about it on Nutrition sites/Diabetes sites via Google to feel more assured that what you heard is correct.:flowerforyou:0 -
I dont worry about protein or sugar. I dont eat sweets so any sugars I get are from fruits usually and apples kick me over every damn day. )0

Jillian is an idiot.
Her exercise form is horrendous and her beliefs on nutrition are full of woo, with no scientific backing whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure he means that you should make sure you're getting enough. As long as you're getting enough protein and EFA's, you can fill out the rest of your macros however you like.0 -

ensuring you get a min of 1g of pro per lb of lbm will ensure you limit lean muscle loss on a diet. also there are other benefits to protein, highest TEF, people generally find it more satiating etc
as long as your hitting your minimum amts of protein and fats you can eat as much cho as fits in your calorie allotment0 -

Well I hate to worry my pretty little head about it but I think its better to understand why instead of blindly following advice so that I can make future decisions all by my big girl self :OP0 -

lol AWESOME! Now thats what I wanted to know! Hope no one took my response as anything but playful convo. Just trying to make people smile while getting info )0 -
Kudos for trying to educate yourself. Unfortunately, there's a lot a garbage information out there and it's tough to separate the good from the bad (at first).
I highly recommend you start here:

Ive heard this several times. Kinda BS in my opinion, Im not a fan of any of Jillian's advice, only her workout videos. I dont trust anyone who sells diet pills, simple as that.
The reason is fiber is considered a carbohydrate on nutritional information, but those are carbohydrates your body cannot digest, so the idea is 'they dont count'. This really is not the best way to think of it, as most diets are expected that a great deal of the carbs you are consuming is fiber, so if you are not counting fiber carbs, you need to significantly reduce your total carbs you have in a day0 -
It is kind of true. What you have to remember though is that many manufacturers already do this for you (disclaimer: I haven't looked at US labeling laws directly but for the other countries I have looked at this hasn't really been regulated so basically it's up to them) ie the carb amount that they list will already have eliminated the fibre amount so I wouldn't be minusing anything away on good faith. But then, I wouldn't be counting my carbs up either!0
