Are you going to be running up inclines in your 5K? Otherwise, it seems to me that improving your speed is what you're really after. In which case, HIIT/speed intervals would be far more useful to you. I do two interval workouts per week. Here's what they look like: Interval Workout #1: Run 1 minute at 8.0 mph Walk 2…

For running, I found the following article at Runner's World: http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning?page=single The upshot is: Your Total Calorie Burn/Mile When Running = .75 x your weight (in lbs.) x # of miles run Your Net Calorie Burn/Mile When Running = .63 x your weight x #…

Amen! It has taken me 20+ years to learn this lesson--wish somebody had given me such good advice when *I* was in university.

Had you been doing cardio-intensive exercise while you were smoking, or have you just started exercising now that you've quit? Your lungs need to be conditioned, just like other muscles and organs in your body, and I found when I quit smoking that I had a month or two of hacking up disgusting stuff while my lungs sorted…

Biology does not equal destiny. Genetics plays some role in the efficiency of your metabolism, where and how you store fat, and so on. But that doesn't mean there aren't things you can do to counter your obtain different results. There are, of course, real metabolic disorders that can be tested for and treated medically.…

I've been running (again) for months, and just broke the 33 minute mark on the treadmill for my 5K. So 32 minutes is really good! Now work on speed intervals and you'll be under 30 mins in no time.

Both! Duh... :)

But not everybody is an addict.

I don't go a single day without eating some candy, having some ice cream, or something like that. I need it, psychologically, and am much happier when I have my sugar to look forward to. The difference is, I eat a limited quantity of it, and I plan for it. Some people find sweets or other snacks/treats to be too triggering…

I know what you mean, but I feel as though a really well-made latke is at least worth the calorie splurge. I never feel cheated after a latke, unlike fast food or something else high calorie like that. Not to mention: Chanukah comes but once a year!

Me too (South Tampa).

Great job! Looking sharp!

I try to suggest date activities that aren't solely focused on food and drink. Like a good date would be to go to an outdoor farmer's market--you walk around most of the time, and if you stop and get something from a food truck or one of the vendors it's likely to be small or something you can select that meets your needs.…

Louboutins are the perfect way to celebrate such an accomplishment! Hope you had a great time at the Cindy Lauper concert.

On the few occasions that I've done this, my hunger has actually woken me from sleep in the middle of the night.

I concur, and I even like cauliflower and kale.

Well played sir. I'd offer you a cookie, but we're all here to lose weight.

I thought everybody loved cartoons? Especially overweight dudes!

Hmmm, what does that say about those of us with female organs who don't? We must be old! Or super ugly.

I'm also training for my first tri sprint. The one I'm aiming for is the first weekend in February (I live in Florida). Swimming is definitely my weakest sport, so I need to most practice in that. But I run 2-3 times per week, bike at least once, and swim once, plus I weight train twice per week. At this point I'm able to…

I'm 5'4" and my goal weight is 160. I guess I'll reassess when I get there, but to get much below 160 pounds I'd have to start getting rid of muscle and I'm not really interested in doing that just to be smaller.

I am right there with you--online dating is, for the most part, no fun! I *strongly* recommend that you google the name "Evan Marc Katz," and then take as much of his advice to heart as you can. After reading one of his books, I rewrote my online dating profile and took some new pictures (helped that I'd dropped some…

Thanks, I will check out those items!

I agree about keeping it simple--I'm already a cyclist and have all of my necessary biking gear. But, I've been told that it's practically impossible to get your bike shorts on over a wet bathing suit. So do you just swim in them? Which seems terribly inefficient (not to mention you aren't going to want to ride or run in…

do you live someplace where the water is always warm? LOL

I am a distance cyclist on the road, have my own indoor training bike, and still go to spin class at the gym regularly! With a good instructor and the right music, it's a fantastic way to get in bike time, especially in bad weather. Definitely give it a try.
