  • Doritos. Of all the salty, carb-y snack foods, those demon chips have some fiendish power to kill my healthy eating resolve like nothing else.
  • ^^ This. Vitamins are not an exception to the rule of toxicity -- the dose makes the poison. Even vitamin C can be toxic in high enough concentrations (though it is really hard to reach that level, as excess quickly flushes out of the body).
  • The problem I see with this doctor's stance is that the science is progressing AWAY from vitamin supplementation for the average individual. There hasn't been just one, but many studies showing the lack of benefit in vitamin supplementation and megadosing. When I see a single scientist taking a stance contrary to the…
  • I have the same problem, and what strong_curves just said is basically the answer. Have something in the house to hit that craving. It doesn't have to be huge; I keep bite-size chocolates, for example, individually wrapped, so that I can eat one or even two and usually squeeze them into my calorie count. Just don't let…
  • What amusedmonk said, but in the meantime the macro counts themselves shouldn't be wrong. You won't get the red/green numbers you want but you can still track amounts.
  • Vodka and Kahlua. Sometimes I leave out the coffee. ;) [No, seriously, I both cream and sweeten, but I'm not picky and I don't generally drink more than a cup a day anymore.]
  • Ah, okay. That makes more sense. I was about to question the judgement of whomever got married, that they might keep friends like that!
  • Were you at a wedding full of third-graders? I swear, some people in this world ...
  • I'm not sure that would work based on the OP. AFAIK there's no way to exclude a meal category from the count, so they wouldn't be able to see both the calorie count of the food planned AND actual calories remaining.
  • Yes, I see some that are completely unhelpful and terse: "You eat less" and "Eat less food," full-stop-end-of-post. Well no sugar, Sherlock. She clearly is aware, since she has lost weight in the past and works out regularly. She's come asking for experiences and advice in breaking out of a slump, and gets something that…
  • I like bottled green tea. CostCo has a bottled green with lemon that is to die for!
  • There's no such thing as a "detox". It relies on weaselly and undefined terms like "toxins", and it has no scientific validity url="http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/dec/05/detox-myth-health-diet-science-ignorance"]second article from the Guardian[/url. I would save my money if I were you, or put it towards…
  • Just thought I'd drop this in here, since it's an example of the kind of thing being debated here. Can you spot the not helpful responses in this thread?
  • Yes. Banting is the origin on a lot of low-carb diets (though IIRC he didn't invent it, just promoted it heavily after losing weight on it).
  • I used to drink way too much coffee a day. I've recently switched to tea, but I still crave the Starbucks Veranda Blend every now and again, which gives me an excuse to go sit in a Starbucks and read. :) I do put some half and half and raw sugar in it, but I don't recall the calories at the moment. Somewhere around 80, I…

  • What rabbitjb said: sadly any creme that promises reduction is a temporary fix at best, using hydration or some topical chemical to temporarily reduce the look/color. I've got my own to struggle with, sometimes in the worst places, like at the place where the arm meets the torso (not on the shoulder, but lower down the…
  • I'm seeing some comments about the Flex fitting poorly and not staying on, but I personally don't see it. I wore a Flex nearly every day for the last two years and it rarely fell off (and usually only if I caught that band edge on the corner of the desk or something). When it did die recently, I considered the Charge, but…
  • There's also the method of prep to look at. Cooked veggies can often be more calories because we introduce things like oils or butter when we cook them. Like when roasting asparagus -- calories go up because I'm drizzling EVOO on them, but soooooooo worth it.
  • I said "no" to snacking after 9pm yesterday. That, for me, is a big accomplishment, as that's usually when I go over my calorie count for the day.
  • I honestly didn't know anyone was still doing Banting. So retro. :) Of course, Banting's method was pretty much a low-carb approach, so I suppose it's not *that* retro, I guess. ;)
  • Depends on the person. Metabolisms differ, so there's no one set amount. I do agree with debrag12, 1 lb. a week is a healthy and sustainable loss rate. The weight did not come on all in one month, it isn't going to go away in one month either.
  • Because if I had to make it myself, I wouldn't be eating yogurt. Part of it is the quick, individual convenience, especially when packing one for work. "But you can make it ahead and put it in individual containers!" Yup. Problem is, I'm not good with reusable containers for work. I usually end up with a bunch of dirty…
  • This is why expensive, silly diet programs (I'm looking at YOU, 21-Day Fix) are so easy to sell. They promise the path to CICO, though they rarely flat-out say that. "The destination is weight loss, and the way to do that is to use these seven little containers with every meal," etc.
  • Agreed. Telling someone just that losing weight is all about CICO is about as helpful as telling someone that the proper way to prepare dinner is to cook the food. It's kind of self-evident, and it's definitely true, but it doesn't help at all in the process to achieve that end result. There are steps to cooking food, and…
  • There's ALWAYS room for bacon. ;)
  • Nope. Bacon is actually exempt from all scrutiny, as it is ... well, it's bacon. Do not question bacon, just be thankful it is in your life. You should not anger bacon by weighing it.
  • I started out loose on the weighing, and since I had a lot to drop it didn't make a huge difference (the calorie deficit was still enough). As I've dropped weight, I've had to weigh more often to avoid stalling. I still don't weigh a lot of prepackaged things -- like a Kashi bar -- and with things like oatmeal I usually…
  • Well, it *is* a quick fix, or at least a short term fix. You're not supposed to do long term courses of it. The goal is to aid weight loss while the patient trains themselves to eat less and move more, but eventually the patient is expected to fly solo without the amphetamine co-pilot.
  • I need more days like that. "I need to eat some chocolate and drink some wine ... it's for my health." Sadly, I'm more often OVER than UNDER.
  • Doritos. Not only kills my salt intake for the day, but I have almost no willpower to resist them and so usually overeat. They're like my diet kryptonite.
