  • I'm vegan! If it's not a starchy, sugary, or fatty vegetable, I don't even count it. So I'll count corn, tomatoes, and avocados, but not broccoli, brussels sprouts, or cabbage (they take more calories to digest them then are in them to start with, so it's a win!).
  • Hi slothbears (love that!). You are a purist! I was always mixing my food together on my plate when I was a kid. You were probably one of those that didn't want them to touch. :)
  • I wasn't familiar with 80/10/10, I just googled it. So that's a raw diet? Roasted veggies won't work for you, sorry! How do you like it gracekatherynadair and orlam3?
  • Yay, glad to meet some new vegans! Let's share some recipes. My new favorite dish was recommended by another MFP vegan friend. It's pretty simple, roasted veggies. Roasting the veggies seems to do something amazing to them, and I can't believe I've only roasted the occasional brussels spouts and asparagus before. The other…
  • Roasted veggies! Toss some sweet potatoes, beets, turnips, rutagagas, sweet onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, and/or anything else you had in the fridge with some olive oil, rosemary, and lemon peel at 425 degrees for 45min or so. Season with salt and pepper. Yum yum yum.
  • My beloved tells me every day. I think he's a bit brain damaged, but he really does think I'm beautiful. 12 years together hasn't changed it.
  • No, really, I'm just middle-aged and small. Smaller (and older) people really do need fewer calories.
  • I only chimed in because people like to tell me that I shouldn't go under 1200, but that's just not true for me. Thanks for the advise about strength training. I do lift lift some weights and tone, but I admittedly don't to nearly enough in the abs. If it doesn't help my belly fat, it may at least make it look better. :)
  • It also depends on your frame and metabolism. I'd gain weight eating more than 1200 calories. I'm 5'4" with a small frame, and I'm 51 years old. I'd LOVE to eat more, believe me, but I'm maintaining 125lb at 1000-1200/day. I get plenty of exercise, and eat all my calories. You may think 125 is small, but not on my frame, I…
  • 5'4" with a small frame, and my goal was 120. I got there but a week of splurging during the holidays but 5 lb back on that I can't seem to get off! I have to net 1000 calories a day. I couldn't do it if I didn't work out every day and eat (aka drink!) those calories.
  • Hi Dolls! I just found this group, how wonderful to hear all of your experiences. Especially after another exhausting night of burning up and insomnia. I read through a few pages but didn't see anyone mentioning insomnia. It ccould be entirely the night sweats, since I do nothing every night but throw the sheets on and off…
  • Wow, what a difference! You look terrific!
  • Harold and Maude. One of my all-time favorites. I don't know if people hate it or not, I just don't know anyone else that's seen it (except the other weirdos that went to the cult midnight shows in DC back in the 70s.)
  • That's so funny, I always think I'm so picky about movies, but I love most of the ones you all have listed! Moulin Rouge, What Dreams May Come, The Big Lebowski, Bladerunner, etc.
  • Well, too much protein can a problem in time, at least for women. I haven't actually read the studies, but I've been told that too much protein can create an acidic condition ,causing the body to leach calcium from the bones to neutralize it. Countries when the women eat much less protein have far fewer cases of…
  • I usually go red on fiber by 11:00! I ignore it. I'm vegan, I eat lots of whole grains, beans, & veggies.
  • My brain turns off, and despite where ever I am really supposed to go, I'll drive home or drive to work. Autopilot. So I figure if I lose my mind, at least I'll go where someone knows me. :)
  • For me, I focus on long-term results. I want to look better, and I do now that I've lost 23lb, but I want to be strong and healthy as I get older. I'd like to lose more weight, but with my slow metabolism I may not, and I'm not willing to eat any less or work out more than 1hr/day. So I focus on knowing I'll be able to…
  • Thick athletic socks to prevent the blisters. They'll soak up the sweat and cushion your feet. Bandaids if it's too late for that. :)
  • bunny ears and a bunny tail.
  • Luna bars have never tasted salty to me. Overly sweet, though, I don't eat them often. But if you've been cutting back on sodium you'll notice that lots of things taste saltier than they used to. A friend of mine noticed this the other day, his wife has been buying everything with lower sodium and over time he's now much…
  • You poor thing! Such problems. :) I use a kabob skewer. Makes a nice round hole.
  • Oh, well I want to burn the calories (so I can eat them back), and I want to have fun and not hate my workout. For me, that usually means Zumba. The class I go to is very high energy and so much fun that it spoils me for any other workouts.
  • For me, I want to burn those calories, cuz I want to EAT those calories. But I found that I feel that burn when I've truly burned a lot of calories. I use a HRM to track them, so I know it's not just my perception.
  • I still think this depends on the size of the person. I am 5'4" and small boned. 1000 net calories/day is maintaining me at 122lb, and has been for months. I don't think an arbitrary number can apply equally to smaller people. I work out almost every day and always eat my exercise calories so I rarely really only eat 1000…
  • How many calories I burn epends on the style of the class. I started Zumba and MFP about the same time, about 6 months ago, and I've lost 23lb. My favorite Zumba class is nonstop high impact aerobics, very high energy dancing and lots of fun. Some of the other ckasses I've gone to are very low impact, low energy and laid…
  • I'm 121lb, small boned, 51yo, and I'm eating 1000-1100 cal/day. I always eat all of my exercise calories. I'm about to my goal and not losing much anymore.
  • I try to stay focused on WHY I'm doing this. I keep my calories down mostly for vanity, I don't want to go back to being fat. I work out because I want to stay strong and fit in the years to come, to be able to tackle anything. Also to get those extra few calories to eat back, since I have a close and personal relationship…
  • I had hip surgery 5 weeks ago. The first three weeks I couldn't work out at all, I just stuck to my calorie limit. I resisted weighting myself, knowing that I'd get back to working out as soon as I could, and that all I can do is just stick to the program and not go over my calorie limit. I sure did miss those exercise…
