  • Mountain trails are my gym.
  • I think consulting your doctor is a much better source in this case. I get the impression there are other factors involved here that are playing into the equation. I like to think people are trying to be helpful but so often on these forums it comes across with a condescending and even insulting tone. There are good people…
  • I love my Vivosmart... and friends. :)
  • This for sure. I've received the encouragement from the "fit" runners too. Truth be told, there will always be someone fitter, faster, stronger, or leaner than you. And the same holds true for them too. We're all runners in the end and the beauty is that we are all each others inspiration from the fastest to the slowest.…
  • Boy do I disagree with this quiz. Half the questions were cute and snarky but certainly don't describe obsession with running. I scored in the 20's because I never need to convince myself to run. I need to convince myself not to so I don't injure myself. I've never thought "this is hard". My only complaint is "Done…
  • We like Pine Nuts. Adds nice flavor as well.
  • I've gone through this same thing exactly. Does she have a training plan to get to a fitness level where she can run regularly? If so double your runs and run with her while she trains. If not suggest that she pick a plan and that you'd help her with it. In my case my wife could only run short distances. I kept telling her…
  • Try turning it into a game. Learn to eyeball calorie counts. Take a guess before you log the food so you can start to put things into perspective. See if you're estimating high or low. I wouldn't be surprised if you could come withing about 100 calories pretty regularly. It sounds like you've been doing this for a while.…
  • Very true. In fact, normally I wouldn't eat my exercise either. But when I'm at the end of the day and really want that one more thing the extra calories are nice to have around. A good rule of thumb I like to use is to not eat more than half of my exercise calories if I do end up eating any.
  • I like to count it before I eat it. Especially if it sounds really yummy. This puts it into perspective and gives me the motivation to exercise moderation. With that said, I don't make any food off limits as long as I'm willing to log it. I love food too so I put in the extra effort to burn calories and give myself the…
  • I have a similar product, the Garmin Vivofit. Same basic idea. I love it, especially since I normally sit at a desk all day but not always. It's really just a fancy pedometer but raising awareness of how active you actually are I find to be helpful. Especially since some days I'm sedentary and others much less so. I set…
  • My best advice, layers are your friend. Wearing a couple layers that can be packed mid run is better than overdressing. A long sleeve tech shirt over a short sleeve for example. Sun comes out and peel off a layer and throw it around your waste. Run with a pack? Throw in an ultralight portable rain coat. You may not use it…
  • No, this is very good. The short stride mid foot strike is the key to reducing injury in my experience. Take a look at Chi Running or Pose Running for some guidance on proper form techniques. There are a lot of theories on proper form out there. Personally I follow the barefoot running techniques. When I first started I…
  • It's a misnomer to say you don't have control over what you eat. You don't have much control over your options but which ones of those you eat and how much of them is entirely up to you. I don't go out of my way to eat "healthy" though I do enjoy it. It really boils down to calories when using MFP. Count and measure as…
  • I typically find that when I start any form of regular exercise it takes a few weeks before I start to see effects from it. If' you've only been running a few weeks, it may be another week or two before that extra activity reflects on the scale.
  • If you're only going to weigh yourself on "good days" then you're missing the point. Weigh yourself regardless of circumstances. If you have a "bad day", I bet that weight will drop off real quick in the following weeks.
  • I agree. Had a similar situation recently. The numbers do change as you lose weight. Not sure if it's helping or not yet but it is looking that way.

  • Oh, I do enjoy a nice wine. :) I totally understand what you mean. I ran an ultra relay last month (my legs were 30 miles) even though I've got something going on with my heel, PF or tendinitis not sure which. (I'm too stubborn to get it looked at because they'll tell me to stop running.) I was feeling pretty invincible…
  • Don't sweat it. What you're doing to hit your goal IS great progress. Keep up the good work. I use smaller goals. My goal is not my ideal weight. It's what I find palatable to shoot for right now. Once I hit it I'll set a new goal. This will continue until I reach my maintenance goal. Small steps. You got this.
  • This sounds familiar. I wonder if this is closer to the root of the problem. I recall early on when I started running being at the gym on the dreadmill. Next to me would be another runner and I'd notice they had their machine set to 6 or 7 but mine was only at 4. I felt like I wasn't pushing hard enough. Perhaps I was…
  • Aside of the obvious answer of, it doesn't matter what they think. Do this for you. They'll notice in time. The people around you see you regularly. The changes your body is going through occur gradually and while there are significant changes between 18 pounds ago and now, most people will more likely be comparing how you…
  • That's too bad. I love the music integration. Especially since ZR sort of works with external players now. I use Spotify for music and while it isn't perfect, it works pretty well and I can enjoy my music and the story. I just finished S2-M11. Going to end up getting season 3 pretty soon at this rate. :)
  • I weight more than I'd like and recently switched to 1520 calories a day. I don't believe in cheat days and sometimes feel hungry when my next meal isn't "on time" and can fit two slices of pizza within my daily calorie goals without going over. So far I'm successful. Certainly you couldn't be addressing me. Don't paint…
  • I was 280 lbs and climbing when I was watching enviously as people ran through my neighborhood. For years I would say how I'd love to try running too but I had to lose the weight first. I never did. But in 2010 I got tired of waiting and started the C25k program. It starts out with walking and just a few seconds of running…
  • Excellent point. I hadn't considered the social impact in a scenario like that. That makes sense. Thanks.
  • I can see what you're saying. The activity of calorie counting being a trigger for a disorder. It seems that there is a simple science to it though. If your body needs 2000 calories and you always put in exactly 2000 calories then your body is never starved of fuel or in excess of fuel. It only doesn't work when you not…
  • I'm unclear. Are you talking about measuring food and shooting for realistic goals? Or measuring foods but not using any goals which wouldn't make a lot of sense. Inversely setting unhealthy goals can and likely will lead to an ED but that isn't the fault of measuring. By my thinking when you measure and plan it can become…
  • Fellow running addict here. FR sent. :) In fact my motivations for losing weight sound very similar. Any other runners looking for friends feel free to send me a FR too.

  • Seriously, why do people have to poop on other peoples enjoyment. Not EVERYTHING in your head need to come out the hole in the front. For the others in this thread. I have no tattoos at all and likely never will. It's a fear of needles and pain thing. I am however fascinated by them and I've seen some gorgeous and creative…
  • Is it me or is your phone getting bigger in those pictures. :) Nice job and inspirational dedication.
