Interesting. I hadn't heard about that.

Grassette— in reading what Pope Francis has written, each of us must look to see if what he describes is something that happens in our life, here and now, or just something that we— more or less— agree with. For me, then, does faith have the power to illuminate 'ever aspect' of life? Can it illuminate the boring hours at…

#4 proposes that faith is a light "capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence," which is "born of an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives." Does faith have this power to illuminate 'every…

it's difficult for a popes to write on faith, because inevitably the Christian people would prefer to argue about ethics and all of the other secondary consequences of faith

I pray the rosary while walking, something I learned from an old Jesuit, may he rest in peace.

What do we want? Do we want happiness, satisfaction, communion with the creator and Father of all, or do we want to do what we like (often shaped by tv and other media)?

At the Origin of the Christian Claim by Luigi Giussani. Ordering one's instinct towards the goal (which is to say, the whole) is the fundamental gift of self to the whole, the so-called 'duty,' whose essence, then, cannot be but love, which is self-surrender. [...] But giving oneself is not human unless it is to a person.…

What I've always liked about NPR is the in depth coverage, but this ends up repeating conventional talking points in election years.

We watch Doctor Who at Amazon. We still like the Simpsons, but not any of the other animated ones on Fox. The Middle is not bad. No cable, but we do watch Hell's Kitchen and Master Chef. Also, we like Shark Tank a lot. These shows are focused on business and process improvement, albeit with a certain amount of bluntness. I…

yes. 330+ days of logging, and that's what I've done. I was eating a LOT of calories at the beginning, and lost weight, because I was eating less net calories. Some folks report that MFP estimates of calories burned are high, but I've mostly been using those estimates. Lately I've been using Runtastic calories about half…

^^This. It's almost been a year for me, and lately I may run a bit if I'm having difficulty keeping it at 4.0

the other thing is that there's really two Yogas- the stretching and breathing one, yoga lite, if you will; and the other kind: the one with the kundalini serpent energy in the spinal column, for example. The lite kind I expect is not bad, and could be done alone or with a video. The other kind, the deeper and more…

Yoga means yoke. Who or what are you meditating on to achieve union with? Whose yoke? Wikipedia: "Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग, yoga) is the Hindu practice of physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, originating in ancient India.[1][2] The goal of yoga, or of the person practicing yoga, is the attainment of a state of…

I always ate breakfast and lunch, but I discovered I was undereating— and inhaling at dinner and beyond. One book I found helpful was Overcoming Overeating, which helped me see some of the characteristics of overeating as well as some of the emotional signals:…

fortnight. I worked on a project once with an Australian, and he used fortnight as a timeframe, and I had to look it up to see that it means 14 days (not 4).

As with Good Friday, I won't exercise (and that's a sacrifice too). I will do 1 full meal and 2 half meals with no snacks. I expect between 1200-1400 calories. My usual is about 1700.

I was surprised at how much I was eating to maintain and even gain weight (I got up to about 340). I've been doing MFP for 9 months, and have lost almost 90 lbs. I've done it by eating slightly less each week, eating calories gained from exercise, etc (including a lot of walking). I think the biggest surprise at the…

I would add: from friends who have posted the prayer: the Great Lenten Prayer is prayed with 3 prostrations, one following each request.

pizza and lemon crumble ice cream today. for fast days, I'm not going to go below 1200 calories (my net to lose weight is 1800 right now), so that puts me within the guidelines given by the bishops in the US (2 small and 1 regular meal). Serious fasting is for the healthy, and I'm not there yet!
