  • I think the OP is referring to an ad I have been hearing on Pandora lately about a joint thing between MFP, some other health site (I think) and Subway to win free sandwiches or something for like a year. Can't be more precise than that because I tune out the ads when I am running.
  • Depends on you current fitness level and experience. 5 months is the timeline for most beginner training schedules.
  • I leave it to you. :)
  • I like this one because I chose not to listen. Oh, knee injuries!
  • Aren't we Homo sapien sapiens? So not quite the same as our Homo sapien brethern? The two things that confuse me about the Paleo diet, is 1) during that time multiple forms of 'cavemen' existed so there is some vagueness I don't like. 2) Two of the three Primary drives are for sugars and fat. The idea being we…
  • I am a fan of anaerobic running, so I try not to breath at all. :D
  • Have you had a medical professional look at your knees? Not to be in any way alarmist, but I injuried my knee in a run and thought time would make it better. Did the whole rest, mixing hot and cold, tried strengthening stablizing muscles, but whenever I would go back to running (or do any sports at greater than 50%) the…
  • Two other points to think about is; 1) If you are starting to feel tired, you can always slow the pace down even if you have to walk. 2) It's your first half marathon, no matter how you complete it, that is a pretty big goal in itself.
  • Depending at where you are at physically, it is doable... But if you don't feel right running a 1/2 is probably the last thing you want to do. Best of luck with your training and watch out for zombies!
  • Congrats on your 10K time! It's always nice when you get a better time. Then it is like a double win. Also, a nice breakfast after a 9 mile run sounds like it will be extra delicious!
  • So how is everyone's Fall Marathon/ Half-Marathon training going? I am in week two and it has been hard to get back into the swing of things.
  • Thanks for the information. As with most things in life there is no simple answer. Ah well, trial and error it is!
  • I've asked the question back when I started about activity level way back when I started and I suppose I have one question for clarification. Is activity level related to the amount you exercise? I was originally told to determine my activity level completely excluding how much I exercise, which I found strange as exercise…
  • You may want to check out ebay. Once you know what one you want to get you can get them at a decent price is you are a savy bidder and willing to wait a bit. I got my FT40 for $70, when amazon was $100-120 and stores it was $160.
  • Awesome sauce!
  • Come on natural 20. Papa needs a new Sword of Wounding?
  • Well... I do enjoy getting a little tipsy, but I enjoy doing it on good beer. Whether I start with extracts or go into doing it from raw ingredients, I am not sure. I have heard from scratch is actually cost effective, while extracts you are paying about the same. I watched some friends make some beer from scratch and had…
  • When you say burn, are we talking workout lactic acid burn or are we talking tearing jabbing burn?
  • Maybe slowing down a little might help also. My wife is doing the same program, but once she got into the straight runs she was running similar paces to me, who has been running for years. Because of that I ran with her once and kept pulling on her shirt to slow her down to a pace I thought she could do the full distance…
  • Welcome back to the world of running! Hopefully whatever made you have to stop is well behind you and won't come back! Great work on the runs.
  • Ooops.... I forgot a very important word in that post... Summer HALF marathon done :embarassed: . Though being able to run a full marathon at pace slightly higher than a 5:00/mile would be awesome.
  • So summer marathon done. Finished in 1:42:29. New PR for me... Now training for my fall marathon. Hope everyon is having a great Canada Day/Independence Day weekend!
  • Calculating God by Robert Sawyer (love it for the Royal Ontario Museum ref) Kendo: Elements, Rules, and Philosophy by Jinichi Tokeishi And the most exciting book is..... Oregon Drivers Manual.
  • True, my pace changes with the distance. My 5 mile pace was 7:40/mile last time I ran it but my 11 mile pace floats around 9:00/mile. Went to that WAVA site, interestingly it made me feel slow. Not even 50%. Boo-urns!:grumble:
  • I think it all depends on what you want your HRM to do. I think if you figure out what are the essentials that you need and see which of the HRMs (FT4, FT7....) works for you and is in your price range get that. You may also want to shop around a bit. I got a new FT40 for $71 off of EBay and have been enjoying it very much.
  • When you say middle of your calf, do you mean the middle of the back part of your lower leg between the knee and ankle or in the middle of the calf muscle? I simply ask because you may have either strained Achillies tendons or got a muscle knot in your calves. You can always try changing hot and cold on the affected area…
  • What about doing whole wheat thin pizza crust? That is what I do when I do homemade.
  • Weightloss tend to happen more quickly in the beginning and slows down near the end. Initial changes in diet "shock" the body and it drops the weight. For 36 pounds, the closer you get to the 20 mark the more slowly the weight will drop off and even more slowly when it comes to the last 10. Just the way the body works.…
  • I always find that I have a tendency to drop my head and shoulders when I run up hills. Kinda like I am just gunna trudge my way through it. I kinda think running up hill already makes you want to run smaller strides and the head down for me makes matters worse. Recently I have been making an effort to keep the head up and…
  • Really? No body practices kendo here? Well, that reads the forums...
