Thinking about getting a HRM, but the ones I've found are over $50!!! I want a decent one, but to just start off, I was thinking the $30 range... do I have any reasonable options?...

Good ones are hard to find for under $60 ($90 in Canada). Check out amazon for a Polar FT4. The ones without the chest strap will not be accurate and are not worth buying.

If you want further accurate results, the HRM needs to calculate vo2max!

If you looking for one around $30, go to walmart and get the SPORTLINE S7, it's more accurate that the numbers you will find on the MFP database

You can go to walmart.com and look it up and read the customer reviews, there very good and have been compared to the more expensive ones, there not perfect but will give you a pretty close idea of what your burning and percentage of your target heart rate

I would strongly advise against getting a cheap HRM. You get what you pay for when it comes to HRM's and if you a buy a cheap one now, you're just going to wind up getting a more expensive one later.

Like one of the other posters said, the Polar FT4 is a good, cheaper HRM. I personally have the FT7 and that was 79 dollars on drugstore.com

Search around online and you'll be able to find a decent one in your price range.

You may want to check out ebay. Once you know what one you want to get you can get them at a decent price is you are a savy bidder and willing to wait a bit.

I got my FT40 for $70, when amazon was $100-120 and stores it was $160.
