  • I found the only accurate measure is a HRM. Each class I do is 2 hours, I train 3 times a week. Depending on the class, I'll burn between 500 - 1000 cals. I did have a Fitbit, but to be honest, the calorie burn it would give for a session of TKD were just as much rubbish as MFP. Its worth investing in a HRM if you want to…
  • Ok, I'm in too, but no pics being posted. I'm likely to trash my phone camera if I dare try and take a pic of me with a bare belly!!
  • It's an ITF thang
  • Over Xmas, I'm aiming to learn my new pattern in TKD - Hwarang. Am about halfway through now. http://youtu.be/RQJdI3VA4a8
  • Hi! There's a whole group of folks who're Indian and trying to lose weight, check it out: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1017-india-weight-watch and welcome to MFP
  • Give it a go, there's nothing stopping you from trying. I do Tae Kwon Do and was extremely unfit when I started over 5 years ago. Age is no barrier either - we have an 80 year old at the club I train with. Go for it!
  • I've cleared out my big clothes, if they weren't worn out, they went to charity. To keep costs low, I've bought 'new' clothes from charity shops, you can pick up some real bargains! I've kept my favourite pair of going out trousers from when I was a size 24/26. I'm a size 16/18 now and aiming to get to a size 14. Good luck…
  • I was never ready for my first sparring match in competition and have never felt ready for any sparring match! I do Tae Kwon Do (TAGB) and we can start sparring in competition from 9th kup (Yellow stripe).
  • I haven't done much sparring in competitions, but it is so very different to sparring practice. Thankfully, our Instructor is doing more free-form sparring during class and has set up a one hour sparring class at one of his clubs, open to all of his club members, which means we're all getting a chance to spar against…
  • I log my TKD class as Tae Kwon Do which is listed in the database and use a HRM (Polar FT4) to log the actual time and calorie burn - the burn generated by MFP is far too generous!
  • Hi, from Leicester, UK. Have been training in TKD (TAGB) for 5 years now and going for my Red belt (2nd kup) in a few weeks. I did a brief couple of months of Jiu Jitsu but didn't get on with the teaching style used. I plan on going back to it if I can find a different school.
  • Sparring's been a regular part of my Tae Kwon Do classes since I started. Hated it to begin with as we didn't do a huge amount. But it's gotten better over time. I'm not too bad against other of my grade and weight class (I compete in competitions every so often). We do semi contact, so it's all about control and safety -…
  • I'm doing TAGB TKD at the moment, which I love! I did do BJJ for a few months, but didn't get on with the teaching style of the school. I'd probably like to give that another go with a different school. Karate's something I wouldn't mind trying as an alternative to TKD
  • I've been doing Tae Kwon Do for the last 4/5 years. Its helped me massively to increase my overall fitness. And you should see some of the Black Belts we have (3rd Dan and higher) obese is one way to put it...but having seen them break blocks of concrete, I'm not arguing with them! That's awful! We have an 80year old, who…
  • I have to say, out of all the training we do, I love doing patterns! Provided I stay on target I should be a 1st Dan Black Belt in April 2015. As for other styles of TKD joining the TAGB style, I don't know about other Instructors, but my Instructor gives the student a probationary period to see if what they know and can…
  • For me, who doesn't follow any faith, thank you for such an informative post.
  • I had better vision with my contact lenses, but now I can't get them in my prescription so back to wearing glasses. Couldn't be without them!
  • Once you have blisters, the only thing I can recommend is blister plasters. They cover and protect the blister and tend to remain on area you've applied the plaster to until the blister has healed. As @KristiRTT has said, don't deliberately burst a blister, otherwise you leave yourself open to an infection which can take…
  • Have a look at this thread, seems to be along the same lines as what you're asking: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1033965-can-you-eat-what-you-want-and-lose-weight
  • 1) When I was in the last stages of ending my last job in London and working on moving back to Leicester, you could say I had a wake up call that made me realise I wasn't happy about me and my life. And that I had to do something change my life. The biggest change would be my weight, since I've been overweight all my life!…
  • As a reference, have a look at this thread, which is good at explaining how to use TDEE on MFP http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/912920-in-place-of-a-road-map-3-2013
  • Do a some trial classes of different arts and or styles and see what clicks. Admittedly it's hard to judge on the basis of one class, but you never know. I've not had to move (yet) but when I was forced to take a break from TKD (health issues my instructor couldn't deal with) I did Jiu Jitsu for a while which is completely…
  • Just bear in mind -10%, -20% 'theories' refer to TDEE calculations. Don't reduce the calorie value MFP gives you depending on how much you say you want to lose a week. MFP takes TDEE and BMR into consideration so you should 'in theory' be eating back the calories you burn working out. A topic on the forums to read if you…
  • Annoying as it is, people like to use values that they feel comfortable with and if that means just calories, then so be it. Given this is a US site, the vast majority of MFP defined values for items comes from http://ndb.nal.usda.gov which is US based, but even then there are variations on MFP to what's listed there.…
  • I'm guessing you put your weight loss at 2lbs a week - 1200 is the amount it defaults to for most people who choose to lose 2lbs a week. As for forum links, literally use the search facility for the forums and the list of topics on the subject is endless. It is a popular topic of debate on here
  • Try http://www.bbcgoodfood.com Some fab recipes to try! As for 1200 cals per day...not my thing, but search the forums, plenty of reasons why 1200 isn't really a good idea long term
  • I posted a link to the BBC News article in the Chit-Chat, Fun and Games forum: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1027849-obesity-is-a-disease-in-the-us-should-it-be There's another thread in the same forum on obesity being classed as a disease: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1023482-obesity-a-disease…
  • Congratulations!!! What a reward for all your effort and hard work!! :drinker:
