  • ED's are not a dieting issue, it is a control issue. Usually, the person with an ED realizes that he/she can control at least this ONE thing in an otherwise out-of-control life. As posted above, those with an ED don't necessarily see it for themselves, but others do. More so in anorexia. They look in the mirror and still…
  • Unless you have cardiac problems or HBP, I wouldn't worry about it. I am hypotensive and on HBP for cardiomyopathy. I *have* to exceed what is recommended. The numbers you see here are a guide not a bible.
  • For the most part, I think this is an excellent tool..... That being said, 128 has never in my experience been the standard weight for 64"....120 has been. Also, someone with a small frame should weigh less than one with a large frame at the same height. Can you adjust for this? :flowerforyou: For me, I was at my…
  • Oh yeah! :flowerforyou:
  • Lestan: Congrats on finally getting that scale to move! That must have been a sweet moment for you! Mimi: If the meal doesn’t make sense, bring it up to the nurse. She can get the meal changed if the MD ok’s it. So many in our generation are used to just doing what we are told and don’t advocate for ourselves (or our…
  • +1 on much of the advice given. I love my red wine, but realized that empty calories were causing my weight gain. I removed the empty calorie drinks during the week and allowed myself to enjoy on the weekend. Net result was a 3 lbs loss my first week. (I am sure that was a lot of water weight, so the jury is still out over…
  • Yes, alcohol can speed up the aging process, but red wine has proven cardiac benefits. A mediterranean diet has proven to have life extending properties. You'll end up wrinkled, but we all will at some point (unless a surgical knife is in your future).
  • Military was a way of life for me. I went AD after I graduated from college. I always found military men attractive ;) I think there are those born to it. My sis *hated* the constant relocations. I love it!
  • I definitely love extreme weight loss! Great show. I do like the biggest loser, but think extreme weight loss is better for non-competitive folks. :)
  • I am one that needs that low a caloric intake. Always have (so ignore my 50+ years). I was a super athlete back when, so calories burned were high. I finally resorted to listening to my body. I ate ONLY when I felt hungry. PERIOD. Yeah, yeah, folks scream about skipping meals - but the reality for me personally was if I…
  • Good morning Ladies! I've been gone for a few days....I definitely need to make mfp a better habit. I drive home to Jacksonville for the weekends - with taking Monday and Tuesday off this week, I wasl up there longer than usual. :) I find that both hubby and I have some bad habits on the weekend that we need to address. We…
  • No. You will always have it. You can get improvement. My father was 54. His EF was 15. They installed an ICD (internal cardiac defibrillator). Back then, a good survival rate was 5 years. Today, they brag about improving it to 10. My father is now 79!!! That is 25 years, post-diagnosis. He has beat it and then some! His EF…
  • +1 with the RN advice.....and I am an RN (also a computer programmer! LOL) in a family of RNs. My father had CHF at 54. (He didn't know family history because his parents - immigrants from Ireland - died when he was in HS.) Salt is the main thing to avoid. With CHF, you don't want to take internet advice. See your…
  • After reading what everyone else has been through, I feel fairly blessed! I have congenital cardiomyopathy. This has me on beta blockers, but when you combine that with natural hypotension, my BP can be seriously low! (70s/30s at night). The only weird thing that ever happened is that 3 years ago I had bilateral hearing…
  • BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass. Arnold Schwarzeneggar at the height of his career would have had a BMI in the obese range. Often BP issues are inherited and not caused as a result of being overweight or not. I think a trip to the MD would help identify the cause. Skip the BMI.....size 4 is what you should be…
  • Happy Friday everyone! Oh, Heather, I can relate to your niece. I was married to one of those jerks. I warned DD not to loan him any $ (he NEVER will pay you back)....yet 6 mo into her Navy career, she lent him money. :noway: He didn't pay her back so I hope she learned her lesson. It is so very hard when it is their…
  • I was only 105 lbs when I met my hubby (size 2). I am now 13x ish and size 8. I told him that I hated the weight gain and he says, "Oh yeah, I should complain that you now have titties and an *kitten*! ooooooooo! No guy would complain!" LOL He supports my weight loss goals, but says he'll take my body either way. He is…
  • How much water are you drinking? In the canteen, I would shave off 1/3rd of each portion and trash it. Drink a huge glass of water to fill you up. When you feel hungry, drink more water. There may be more calories in the canteen food than you are counting. Not sure where you work, but why can't you bring your own lunch?
  • If nothing else convinces you to drink water......maybe this will.... Picture yourself at 50. Look at the faces of 50 yo women (unchanged by surgery). You will see a wide variation of wrinkles, from almost none to very deep with sagging skin. The difference (when you take out special genetic exceptions) comes from who…
  • Nice to have someone to share the boat with! I was told to increase my sodium intake by an MD back in college. Been tossing salt on for the past 35 yrs. :)
  • I went to St Francis Prep in Queens (NYC) in 1979. Dad was AD military! That being said, my 2 youngest graduated from Ed White. My two boys went to Forrest and I swore I wouldn't put my daughters through that school! My oldest girl graduated from HS in SC. Yeah, just like my Dad, I do a lot of moving around. Hubby is Army…
  • Put a piece of wood or hard plastic on the floor and below the scale and try again. (That piece should be larger than the size of the scale.) We do this when we do health checks at corporate offices that have carpeting where we do the health checks.
  • Just an FYI for folks.....sodium (even high amounts) are not necessarily bad for everyone. You should see the looks I get from folks when they see how much salt I add with my food. What they DON'T know is that I was born naturally hypotensive. Due to genetic cardiomyopathy, I have to take beta blockers. For those that…
  • I started gaining weight about age 48. I am currently 52. It's more than just age. It is being female - sorry guys, it DOES make a difference - and soon, for you, peri-menopausal. Your body simply doesn't burn the calories like it used to! It will take time, but you can figure out what works for you. Good Luck!
  • Fellow wino here! I have been menopausal for about 2 years now. I do love my wine! So I am giving it up during the week and rewarding myself on the weekend only. I hope this helps because I cant stand my flabby belly and thighs!
  • When I was a single mom of 5, the only wine I had was what I put in my spaghetti sauce. Later, I started to enjoy my glass of melot every evening....then 2....sometimes 3. Anyway, weight kept creeping up. I added exercise. Nope, didn't help. I already at so little that I didn't want to reduce that, so I started looking at…
  • Here's a fun one for ya: My house in Jax (Westside) but I work in Boca Raton! I am only home on the weekends! LOL
  • Another point I would make for those over 50..... if you have HBP, you may be taking beta-blockers (coreg, metoprolol, etc.). Studies have shown that beta blockers reduce RMR (resting metabolic rate) by 12%. This could be affecting your ability to lose weight.
  • Hi! I'm new here too! I am 52 and was fit from 1984 thru perimenopause. Since then the weight has been creeping up steadily. I am fully menopausal now and the lower metabolism sucks! I am 5'4'. After my first was born, I dropped to 105 lbs (which everyone thought was too thin), but I varied between that an 115 until a few…
