I al But, from what I've read (Lustig etc), the Fructose half of sugar (sucrose is 50/50 glucose/fructose) can only be processed by the liver (and not by any other cell as glucose can be). The liver turns fructose into fat (apparently). So sugar is different from most carbs in this regard. Also, sugar in soda etc seems to…

Personally not arguing with anything you've said - I have no expertise in this area. But here's a top UK cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra who also seems to think inflammation from the wrong (refined carby) diet is more to blame for CVD and cholesterol is much less important than is commonly believed (statins!). I don't…

One of my colleagues, aged 55 - runs several triathlons a year - suffered a heart attack about a year ago. He survived thankfully but he lost his commercial pilot's medical. He's a physics Phd and all round smart guy. He's looked into it for himself and he concluded it was likely due to carb loading / hyper-insulinemia /…

https://www.bodyrecomposition.com/muscle-gain/muscle-gain-math.html/ According to Lyle McDonalds calculator you only need around 175kcal a day in surplus for muscle growth and additional calories beyond this are more likely to go to fat.. No experience myself as I'm in the middle of a 5 year cut! :-)

used to be always hungry when I included refined carbs - pasta, cornflakes etc and sugar in my (calorie controlled) diet. I cut them completely when I went on keto diet about 3 months ago. Almost never get hungry now and cravings are close to zero.

Everyone has to find what works for them I guess and there's more than one way to lose weight. My own experience for what it's worth.... About 5 years ago I dropped from 108kg to 78kg in about 9 months by counting calories (but not changing macros and still having sweet treats when calorie budget allowed) and running 5k…

My girlfriend suffered really badly with migraines and she is allergic to all painkillers except Triptos. We recently went on the ketogenic diet and her migraines have cleared up completely except for when she has her period. Her brother suffers from epilepsy. Interestingly, the keto diet was created for epileptic children…

I just bought one of Lyle's books - looking forward to reading it! Lyle wrote a book on the Ketogenic Diet right? Be interested to read that one as well. Regarding the Kevin Hall study there's a response from Fung here - https://www.dietdoctor.com/how-kevin-hall-tried-to-kill-insulin-hypothesis-pure-spin Kevin Hall is the…

There's evidence that prolonged caloric restriction causes the body to react by reducing it's energy expenditure (slowing metabolism) - see the link to scientific american below. More worrying, there are signs that this effect can be very prolonged after a period of caloric restriction.…

Thanks! Very interesting - especially the acc.org one. Was interesting to read them singing the praises of Statins though. I just watched the movie Statin Nation a few months ago. The gist of it was that some evidence shows they only improve total morbidity for 1 in 100 people and have a lot of side effects for many. I…

I've been keto three months now and it's amazing. After the initial adaptation period that is! It's like freedom from the slavery of eating. The whole concept of three meals a day and two snacks just to get through one day seems ridiculous to me now. Honestly if someone told me I wasn't allowed to eat for three days…

One of my pilot colleagues was in ketosis and a security agent reported him. He was hauled off the plane for testing and the flight was severely delayed. We are not allowed to fly even after a negative test result.

Some new research on IF states "Abstract Objective Objective: Intermittent fasting (IF) is a term used to describe a variety of eating patterns in which no or few calories are consumed for time periods that can range from 12 hours to several days, on a recurring basis. This review is focused on the physiological responses…

Thanks for your thoughts. What do you think about calcium scoring MRIs as in his point 3? If they are as conclusive as the author states, I don't understand why the AHA would resist them?

I'm not a troll. There seems to be a rigorous debate at the highest levels about nutrition, CVD, diabetes and I'm interested in this conversation. I don't have an opinion. I just fly large airplanes for a living so I don't know enough to have one. There seem to be a growing number of doctors and scientists who think CVD is…

The link is at the top of the post. The first part of the article talks about setting up MFP for keto macros and the lower part talks about how to get the script that adds the Net Carbs column. The problem is that some countries food products are labelled already as Net Carbs (Uk I believe) and some are not so beware of…

But Dr Peter Attia who developed metabolic syndrome even while he was an athlete seems to be saying something similar.. http://eatingacademy.com/nutrition/do-calories-matter Was a bit surprised by the amount of hostility to Fung... Maybe Attia will be in for worse :-) I don't know myself - trying to keep an open mind I…

Hi - I've lost 14kg in 2 months on the keto diet. About 4 years ago I lost a lot of weight by counting calories and counting exercise but I found it very hard to keep the weight off and was always hungry. I now believe this was because I was still eating sugar and carbs that resulted in cravings and swings in blood sugar…

Here - you can setup a script that automatically calculates net carbs as well http://cavemanketo.com/configuring-mfp/

Precisely. The question is whether certain types of food (simple carbs) are causing us to over-eat because they drive fat storage and induce cravings. It's a multi-faceted problem involving multi-national firms, social issues, politics, education and personal responsibility. That is likely also has bio-chemistry at the…

"Three major conclusions can be drawn from this study. First, a high intake of sucrose from a low-fat, hypoenergetic diet did not adversely affect weight loss or other metabolic indexes when compared with an isoenergetic diet in which sucrose was replaced by starches and aspartame. Both diet groups showed equal significant…

I'll say it again - the proof is not contained in what I said. I'm not a bio-chemist. The proof I was referring to is with Lutwig's presentations. Apologies if that wasn't apparent. Regards.

I don't think you've understood the point about calories. What these guys are saying (Lustig) is that if you eat say 2000 a day with high GI carb loading, the increased insulin levels might cause say 500 of those to get stored into fat rather than being burned. So you only have 1500 a day available to your muscles and…

Nice to read opposing views (especially from the scientists - thanks for that). I guess you have to look at upsides versus downsides right:- A) If Lutwig is right and I cut all sugar out except from eating fruit - then I stand to get potentially massive health gains (or disease avoidance) for the price of losing out on the…

Thank you - I'll read those.

Does anyone know of any scientific papers that refute or de-bunk the bio-chemistry in Prof Lutwig's explanation of the mechanism behind the metabolism of Fructose by the liver? Seems to be an incredibly complex issue and probably requires decades of study in medicine, endocrinology and bio-chemistry to make any meaningful…
-
Guys I'm not saying the proof is with me - it's in the links I left. Checkout Professor Lutwig's videos - he will explain the biochemistry of how fructose is directed to the liver to be metabolized and this results in fat storage whereas glucose can be metabolized by any cells / organs in the body. Watch Sugar: The bitter…
