  • I agree with your husband in terms of not overdoing it the night before a race. I eat a normal size portion of healthy carbs (whole wheat pasta) the night before long runs and it serves me just fine. I try to keep carbs to about 55-60% of my calories the week before the race. I also try and avoid anything extremely fatty,…
  • Be very careful - you walk a fine line. If your goal is simply to finish the marathon, you may still be okay. You'll just have to take it much slower than planned. If your goal is to finish in a specific time, that may not be possible with this injury. The runner in me completely sympathizes with you wanting to achieve…
  • A little over a month til the Frederick Half! I'm excited for this one. I'm doing the Iron Girl Half the week before in Columbia, so I'm hoping the Frederick half will provide some relief from the dreadful hills in Columbia. How is training going for everyone?
  • Official half marathon training starts this week. This time I'm trying for some speedwork during the week. Have never done that before, so I'm a little nervous. Long run this weekend will be 4 to 5 miles. It's been 3 weeks since the 10 miler, so I think my legs have recovered :-)
  • Clyde's 10k is a GREAT race. It's crowded enough to be motivating but not so much that it inhibits your running. And the post race food is really good. I've run it several times and may just do so again this year.
  • BIG CONGRATS on quitting smoking... I'm with you there. Had my last one on 4/18/11... it isn't easy but it's worth it!
  • I've heard the same thing about Frederick. I know a bunch of people who ran it last year and loved it. I'm thinking of going for the Marlyland Double in 2012.
  • That's awesome, congrats!!! I PR'd a 10k a few weeks ago and ever since then my legs have been bricks. I think I need to listen to my body and take a rest day today. I'm doing a 10 miler in 3 weeks and right now I'm not even sure I could finish it, which is frustrating considering I've been training since July.
  • What's up, folks! I'm Martha and I live in Baltimore and I've been an on/off runner for several years. To date, I've run one full marathon, four half marathons, and several 10 and 5k's. I love finding new places to run locally. This summer I discovered the NCR trail, which is AWESOME! I'm trying to step the running up a…
  • Zyban is generally perscribed to help you quit smoking, not for appetite problems. I've taken it on 3 separate occasions and I would say I have a love-hate relationship with it. It does help reduce the cravings and get you through that initial first 3 months, but it also made me feel slightly crazy. Like hyperactive, can't…

  • This is my absolute favorite. Calories are in the MFP database and are correct, as long as you make it as is. Slow Cooker Pumpkin Oatmeal Serves: 8 Yield: 8 cups Ingredients: 6 cups water 3 cups pumpkin, diced (I use 1 large can of the Libby's Pumpkin) 1 1/2 cups steel cut oats 1/2 cup honey 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2…
  • Are you close to a Trader Joe's? They have a "Reduced Guilt" Pizza Primavera (frozen) that is awesome. They also have individual servings of mac & cheese that are low cal and made with whole wheat pasta. Both are a go-to for me in a pinch. Good luck!
  • "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Single, greatest movie line EVER!
  • I'm training for a 10k at the end of October and am in the middle of Hal Higdon's 10k training. I love it and I feel like I'm getting stronger every week. You can be flexible with which days you do the runs as long as you get them in (I run Monday, Wednesday, and Sat/Sun and cross/strength train three other days). Good…
  • I've run 4 Half-Marathons and one full. I used the Galloway program for one and then switched to Hal Higdon's program. I don't think there's anything wrong with Galloway, just personally prefer Higdon. I find it easier to focus on miles rather than minutes. Either way, be careful. As you increase your distance, you need to…
