  • Welcome Maura! Hopefully, this group can grow into a space for positive, responsible accountability. 🥰
  • Hi, I’m J! I’m from the US (west coast). I use MFP because, as a vegan, I need to monitor key nutrients, particularly those that are most frequently found in animal products. I started this group because, as an ED warrior, the strict culture attitudes I often see in the community is overwhelming. For example, I’ve…
  • Thanks for your reply! I’m honestly not exaggerating my medical situation. So there really isn’t much I can change about my shopping routine. I get my staples like nuts/seeds/etc. an vitamins by subscription and changing that would create many more problems than they solve. I gave this a great deal of thought (and tried a…
  • Thanks for your reply. Yes, you’re correct about WFPB being whole food/plant-based. And as I mentioned above, it’s pretty cheap. Pre-COVID-19, I would only spend about $20-25 on my groceries. But the same condition that makes immediate logging difficult, makes driving an impossibility. So post COVID-19, I have to have my…
  • disruptions to your daily routine can be devastating. Particularly when you're already battling depression. I don't have advice to give, but I wish you the best. 💕
  • And there is the point of this whole post. If I’m cutting the recipes, I’m obviously trying to make less. We’re in quarantine so I can’t exactly give away excess food. If my efforts aren’t successful, I have to figure out why. But thanks for your “help.”
  • This is what I had hoped. But I thought I was doing something wrong because the only size appropriate recipes were the ones I'd adapted from restaurants/coops/stores. And most of my recipes are adapted from "test kitchens" so I (incorrectly) assumed that their serving sizes would be less arbitrary than your standard…
  • As mentioned above, my concern is food waste. Generally, if a recipe serves 8, I'll cut the recipe in half or 1/4 so I don't waste food. I don't have the freezer space to store excess leftovers. Before the quarantine, I not only had freezer space, but my bottomless pit bf would eat any and all leftovers when he came to…
  • As is the case with the example recipe I posted, recipes generally say "Serves [x]" in the directions. So if a recipe says Serves 2, then I shouldn't have four (or more) meals...unless I'm not eating enough OR the portions are ridiculously large.
  • As an ED warrior, I try not to count calories (one of my triggers) but I do track my nutrients and I am meeting my targets.
  • Great suggestion! Logging/weight loss/etc. is not my primary concern. I'm mostly worried about waste. Since it's just me for the next few weeks, I cut the recipes in half so I don't create a lot of waste (I don't have the freezer space to store excess leftovers).
  • Well, most of my recipes are handwritten (or on my Notes app) because I usually veganize and test my favorite recipes before adding to my rotation, but the most recent example is this hummus recipe that was supposedly four servings:…
  • I FINALLY hit all of my nutrition goals before I added my supplements!
  • Honestly, it's really none of your business. It's the parent's job to police what their kids eat and teach them healthy eating habits. If the parent is doing his/er job, then (1) s/he'll ration the candy, and (2) keep the stash in a "special" place so the kids understand that they are not to binge candy (and monitor. If…
  • Haha! That would certainly make an interesting question too!
  • Thanks for your suggestion! I don't feel entirely comfortable in ultra baggy or barely there clothing (a baggy top once fell completely off during a Pilates class and one of the yoga classes I teach has a lot of men), but it's definitely worth a shot if it will keep the wardrobe malfunctions at bay. I completely agree with…
  • I think you know, in your heart, what happened and what you need to do. Based on what you've written (and my personal ED battle), it seems that, somewhere during your year and a half journey, your habit of restricting and intense working out became a compulsion. And it was serving you well while you were still losing. But…
  • Actually... There is a documented correlation between poverty and obesity. There are parts of North America where the nearest grocery store, Walmart or farm is over an hour's drive away. But if you don't have a car and you're working 2-3 jobs to avoid homelessness, what can you do? You eat what you can get your hands on.…
  • Actually, that is exactly what the body positivity movement is about. We live in a society that marginalizes people who are too fat, too thin, too tall, too short, too pale, too dark, too...something. Especially when we think they are too fat. And we all do it. The body positivity movement is about learning to think "I am…
  • That's not how it's done in my personal and professional circles. If there is an issue with a side topic, people may raise an eyebrow or even mention the issue, but quickly go back to the main topic. My grandfather used to say "don't leave your dollars [behind] because you're counting the pennies"which was his way of…
  • (1) What part of "you can lose weight..." or "not impossible but a lot of work" means "not feasible?" (2) If my post were based on her BMR, I would have discussed consuming 989 calories instead of 1300. (3) As a general rule, it's a good idea to actually read a comment before trying to refute it.
  • It was a typo but I never made a correction because I wasn't 100% sure what his number actually was and I don't really care (I only care that he is happy and healthy enough to hang out with me). Plus, it was immaterial to my point. I do remember he had one of the lowest BFPs on his team and that a few of the guys were…
  • Are you sure? I may not know a lot about men's weights, but I know, from my own experience (and years of ED counseling), that everyone gets to a point where the scale stops being important. You mentioned that he's losing a bunch of inches. Don't you think that is more important than the number on the scale?
  • Actually, is BFP was measured using a caliper. Not an estimate from a scale, photo or other device. Secondly, I've known quite a few guys with very low BFPs and they all look pretty small (though I don't know if they were "overweight" or not) Lastly, I never said a S wasn't tight on him, but when a M is sold out, he…
  • Based on your age, height and weight, your BMR (the number of calories you need to maintain your weight if you were in bed all day) is 1589 cal. And if you're sedentary, your TDEE (daily caloric requirement) is 1907 cal. (source: https://idealprotein.com/bmr-calculator-2/ ) Now, one pound of body fat contains between 3436…
  • OK. Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned the weight part. My BF is 5'11" (179cm) 198 and wears a S/M. I never knew the weight/size stats for any of my other BFs, so I used him as my measuring stick. Now that I think about it, his BFP is usually around 2% so maybe that's why he looks so small. With that said, I stand by the…
  • That's actually quite sad, really.
  • That's a very interesting perspective. I belong to several professional and lifestyle groups so it never occurred to me that, when posting an off-topic question, someone might be looking for a very specific answer :)
  • CICO works to a certain point. 5'10" 195 is pretty low for an adult man. It could be that he is already at an optimal weight for his constitution. The fact that he has lost inches speaks volumes.
  • Today is a lazy day (well...except for the Power Flow class I subbed this morning and the house cleaning planned - just no cooking or anything that requires hand washing dishes). Breakfast: Lemon Ginger tea with mint and honey. Chocolate Chia Pudding with stewed berries, coconut yogurt and almond butter. AM Snack:…
