Science Compared Every Diet, and the Winner Is Real Food
http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/03/science-compared-every-diet-and-the-winner-is-real-food/284595/ The Atlantic: Science Compared Every Diet, and the Winner Is Real Food Researchers asked if one diet could be crowned best in terms of health outcomes. If diet is a set of rigid principles, the answer is a…

A very very simple thought on "exercise calories"
We all know this comes up all the time with very different views. The crux of the issue seems to me to be this: If you want consistent(ish) weight loss, then you need consistent(ish) calorie deficits. BMR is basically a constant, and lifestyle is basically a constant. The target calorie deficit is a constant. Exercise is a…

Profile pic: Cumulative caloric deficit and weight loss
The graph in my profile pic shows my weight loss in kg (blue) and cumulative caloric deficit, divided by 3500*2.2 for the number of calories in 1kg of fat. The light blue line is a linear trend of my weight loss calculated in excel. I assume my BMR is 2300. This is obviously low, so it appears I'm losing weight in advance…

Question: steady or variable cal deficit better?
I just have a question regarding whether its better to hit the same caloric deficit day after day, or if changing things up is better? For instance, is it good (more efficient, as in fat loss per time) to have one day a week where you change your target to maintenance? Does that do anything to prevent your body getting…

HRM connectivity problems
Hi all, Recently my hrm has been having problems finding my heart rate. It worked perfectly for almost a year until the batteries started to die, so I swapped those (both wrist watch and chest strap), but there are still occasions where the watch and chest strap don't seem to be communicating with each other. Have other…

The Essential Guide to Nutrient Requirements
The National Academies Press has released updated dietary reference intakes (RDI). Think of it as the new bible for nutrition. You can download it for free here: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11537&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed: nap/new (New from the National Academies Press) [You have…

About BMI
From Matt Yglasias: http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/2010/09/body-mass-index/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+matthewyglesias+(Matthew+Yglesias) He has a great chart comparing national average BMI for a bunch of countries. Follow the link to have a look. I'm pasting the text of the post here, but…

Powerthirst - recommend this energy drink
Ok, I don't actually recommend drinking it, just watching the ad. Awesome. I've got gratuitous amounts of manergy just from watching it >_< http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuNxHqwazs ps. almost certain this isn't a real product.

how do you interpret skinfold tests?
I wonder if anyone has any experience with skin fold tests? I got it done by the AIS the other day and just had the results emailed to me. I'd love to have someone explain it a bit more. They told me not to pay much attention to the body fat %. They focus on the sum of skin fold measurements when they train their athletes.…

Getting my body composition tested at the AIS :)
I'm off to see the AIS for an "anthropometric profile". I'm pretty sure its a caliper method fat test. FYI: AIS is the Australian Institute of Sport, a government department that churns out Olympic medals and does a lot of health / nutrition research as well. I'm not sure which of those is the main business, but I can…

Pepsi "wants to be part of the solution"
From The Economist: Read the whole article here: http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15772138&fsrc=nlw|hig|03-25-2010|editors_highlights Excerpts from the beginning and end: COCA-COLA once famously defined its market as “throat share”, meaning its stake in the entire liquid intake of all humanity. Not to be…

Just got selected in the top running division
My university organises an event called Inward Bound. Its an orienteering race where you're blindfolded, driven around for about 3 hours, then dropped off and told where the finish line is, and how far away you are (within a 10km / 6m band) but you're not told which direction you've been taken. The first thing to do…

Need help cooking Chinese with low sodium
Ok, so most of what I cook is Chinese style or inspired food. I use a lot of soy, temari, shoyu, oyster sauce, black bean sauce, hoy sin sauce, msg (don't freak out) and other stuff. One thing that's really obvious when I enter this into MFP is the sodium content - especially from black bean sauce (>1000mg from 1tbs!!!). I…

The Biggest Bully: TV show a loser for weight loss
An ex-classmate from way back just published an article that many here may like to read. She's done a lot of work over the past 10 years or so with people who have eating disorders and the article begins focusing on "The Biggest Loser", but covers the general social attitude toward fatness in the west. You can read it…

How do you recover muscles quickly after a big workout
I'm training for a big race in 5 weeks (very short time left) so I can't really afford too many down days at the moment. But I found on Friday after a 10mile run it took me nearly 3 days to recover, and on the third day I had to cycle since I still could barely run. Today I did 12miles (and started carrying a pack) but the…

How do you log interval training?
I've recently started HIIT. At the moment I'm doing 5x 30:30 sprint:jog intervals after a warm up and about 30 mins before the balance class at my gym (taichi, yoga, pilates, balance). The problem is I can't work out how to log the intervals. I don't mind leaving it out, and just feeling free to go 1-200 cals over my…

Alcohol
How do people deal with alcohol? I'm from Aus (don't know if that's relevant but...) and I regularly drink socially, say twice a week? If I'm out for 2 hours I might have 4-6 beers (600-750 calories). If its a longer night, its more. One of the first things I did was make one meal 'alcohol' so I can see the total calories…

Fitness assessment results
I had a fitness assessment this morning. The basic routine was to take my height and age (gender is obvious I think), blood pressure and girth measurements, then load me up with a HRM and take my resting heart rate, then put me on a stationary bike and record heart rate at different workloads, measured in Watts/Kg, then…

What's the maximum deficit needed to avoid 'starvation mode'
My BMR+daily activity is about 2,340 calories, hence my MFP target is 1,340 (I'm impatient and I know I wont quite, which seems to be the main reason given for gradualism). All of last week I had net calories between 700-1400, mostly closer to 700. Obviously, as an 84kg (185pounds) male, just under 30years, 183cm (6"1'),…

USDA disagrees with the box - who to trust?
I'm trying to enter couscous that I had for lunch, and the box says 1 serve of 100g has 341 kcal / 1448 kj. Also, 11.3g proteing, 71g carbs and not much else. The ingredients are pure durum wheat semolina. Nothing else (just add hot water). But USDA gives the calorie count for 100g as 112 calories. Just under 1/3 of the…
