Runners - 1 legged squats??
I was reading an article on balance exercises and one of the suggested moves was a one legged squat and it said they were "imperative for runners" because it worked the gluteus medius. I am not a runner but I sometimes run (okay, jog). Runners, do you do one-legged squats?? What improvement have you seen? **edited to…

Arm strength question
I am right handed. For most daily activities my left arm is nothing more than decoration. When I do strength training I do the same on each arm. But my right arm has noticably more muscle because I don't use my left arm for much of anything outside the strength training. If this were you, would you begin doing extra…

Skinny Fat is my goal
Working in health care for many years I'd never heard the term skinny fat used the way it is used on these forums (it has a very different meaning in healthcare) but people always use it as if it's as bad as being obese. But skinny fat (as it's used here) is exactly what I'm aiming for. I'm not there yet, but I hope to be…

Lifting heavy not better
Repost as posted in wrong forum initially. This doesn't surprise me, but it's still nice to know research agrees when faced with the constant barrage of "you must lift heavy" and "light weights do nothing" posts on these forums. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_125127.html With Weights, You Can Lighten…

Diet vs Lifestyle change
I find the number of MFP members who dislike the word "diet" fascinating, since most are actively trying to lose weight. I realize am older than a lot of members (51) but I've considered myself on a diet since, well, since I was old enough to notice what I looked like (8th or 9th grade, probably). I grew up when young…

Meeting my goals
Yesterday evening I met my new birthday goal for the second year in a row. Jan 2011 I made the cliche New Year's resolution to lose weight and get back in shape. My goal was to get back in my favorite non-stretchy size 8 jeans I wore when my husband and were dating before my birthday. Thanks to my daughter's recommendation…

NSV??
First, a little history. I haven't lost any weight in a while. I've exceeded my original goal and maintained it for about 8 months, except for a gain over the Christmas holidays, which I lost again in January. I'd like to lose another 5-10 lbs but I like the diet and exercise routine I'm doing now so just hoping that might…

Water - why so much?
I often see posts on here from members stating they drink above the recommended 64 oz of water per day. Sometimes it even seems as if they are bragging about how much water they do/can drink in a day. I'm not suggesting that is good or bad, but I've always been curious as to why those that do this do it. So for those that…

Calories in Spiked Juice??
Does anyone know how to calculate calories in home fermented juice. My husband buys this stuff called "Spike Your Juice", which is a yeast that you add to juice and in 3-4 days you have an alcoholic juice drink (very tasty stuff!!). The box says that after 4 days the alcohol content could be 14% (varies with the juice…

Hungry Girl
I've seen hungry girl mentioned many times on these boards. I didn't realize it was a Food Network show until just now. The stuff she made looked disgusting. rice cake with pkg tuna and salsa on it?? pkg strawberry yogurt with peaunut butter Capt Crunch and strawberries?? Beef jerky or popcorn the perfect snack. I don't…

How much difference does 20 lbs make?
Last night I wore a 20 lb weighted vest while doing free step. It made a considerable difference in how much I sweated and how hard I had to work to get through 30 min. But, I have no idea how much difference it made in the calories I burned. Is there a formula to calculate things like this?

Low carb - what is it?
What do you consider a low carb diet? I see this term thrown around a lot on these forums but it's also pretty clear that it means very different things to different people. For those that strive for a low carb diet, do you count total carbs, or net carbs?

P90X and an old lady
I was talking to my daughter yesterday about wanting to get some new workout DVDs to do in addition to Zumba. She said she was going to loan me her P90X DVDs because she thought I'd love it. I've seen many posts about P90X on here and it always sounded really hard and like it had a lot of weights involved. So my question…

weighted vest
I really hate that I can't get the same calorie burn from Zumba that I did before I lost weight. Has anyone ever tried doing Zumba or other aerobics in a weighted vest. If so, was it awkward? I expect it to take some getting used to, but was it ever comfortable and still fun? What other exercises are good in a vest? I…

Medical Advice
Who do you listen to for nutition advice? It seems to me that there are a lot of people on here that do not follow the "current medical guidelines" for nutrition. If not there (or if there) who or what do you listen to? Or do you not listen to anyone and just eat whatever you please without a thought to nutritional…

Should I feel bad??
I don't know why, but we got far less trick-or-treaters this year than in the past. So, I found myself with a LOT of leftover fun size candy bars, which would be eaten if they remained at my house. So, I brought them to work and set them our for others to eat. But, now I'm thinking of posts I've seen on these boards…

Wii Fit

Gun control
So I was at a bar the other night and a friend walked by and said "okay, we know you have guns, you don't have to flex 'em". I was just sitting at a table with my arms crossed on the table. I just thought he was being goofy. But today someone else said something about my arms. I can feel bulges when I run my hands over my…

Counting sex as exercise

Whole grain beer
Would adding Benefiber to a glass of beer be the same as whole grain beer? I asked this of a nutritionist friend and she laughed loudly and said "That's the best one I've heard in a while. I'm stealing that.". I think she thought I was joking. But beer is made from grain, it has carbs, so if you add the fiber back, why…
