Not sure if I am in the right place
I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. My dr has been following me so she caught it very early. I am now on a medication and see a dietician in 2 weeks. The ADA website is very vague on recommendations but they do mention 45-60 carbs/meal with fats and protein to balance it out. I can manage that, it doesn't sound very…

NSL?
I was happy the other night when someone noticed I had lost some weight. I am pretty big and I haven't lost much so I didn't think it was noticeable and it made me feel good. I am at my mom's and we have been talking about all kinds of things. I told her I am counting calories and will talk to a dietician. She wanted to…

What do you think of using exercise as punishment?
Another post triggered this thought but I didn't want to hijack. Sometimes coaches or instructors will make students run laps or do push ups or some other physical activity for misbehaving. I always thought it was a bad idea to equate exercise with punishment because then you would develop a negative attitude towards it.…

Can I have a remedial quote lesson?
I am having trouble, since the board change, telling who is actually being quoted when there are multiple quotes. Anyone else?

When/How does it happen (mindset)
I notice that many of the people who have been here for awhile and have been successful have developed a pretty healthy (for lack of a better word) lifestyle. It is a whole mindset. I don't know how to explain this well. I just know that I don't feel that way, never have. I don't think I would have got fat so easily if I…

What to look for in a gym?
I am going to check out a chain gym, Fitness 19, on Wednesday. They offer $10 monthly fees for certain days and $49 enrollment. We have other gyms near us LA fitness, YMCA, a rec center and more. The $10 got my attention, then I looked on line and saw the rest. There are no showers. I live nearby so I can shower at home. I…

Is this right?
I had a shrimp cocktail at TGIFriday's. It was really good 100 calories and 18 g of protein. I am not sure how much is in the cocktail sauce so I just went light on that. It was so much better tasting to me than some of the higher calorie options.

Is it common to have to rely on the app, at least at first, to know when you should stop eating?
Left to my own devices I would snack here and there and unknowingly take in more calories than I need. Now that I am logging them, I am getting how to budget my calories. But, if I didn't know I had used up my allotment for the day I would probably nibble more. I like the app. I don't know calories in my head. I don't go…

What are some tasty replacement sushi options?
One of my favorite sushi rolls, golden dragon, that is tempura fried is of course many calories but yummy. We went out last night and I shared one and had an eel and cucumber hand roll. I couldn't find the calories for that, it's smaller than a roll, but it was much better. I just about broke the bank in calories, though.…

Is relatively high protein only a problem if your kidneys don't function well?
There is a recent post about how you learned about nutrition, but I swear everything has been turned on its head. It reminds me of the movie "Sleeper" when in the future all the "unhealthy" treats are found to be good for you. I remember there were warnings about high protein diets (I don't know how high or the macro %)…

Why are there opinionated people on the internet?
My husband laughed at me when I said there were people with strong opinions here. I guess that could be just about anywhere. But, but irl people don't ask for links to back up my claims.

Will reading through and putting into practice the info in the stickies be enough to start with?
I really hope this goes better than my last thread  I really like the mfp app. I didn't discover the forums right away. I like that I can see successes and learn from others who have been there. I read some of the old stickies and will go through them when they are restored. But, I feel like I am missing something.…

Does anyone feel like they are talking to themselves?
I am still learning here and when I give any input I feel it is as much for me as it is for the OP.

She don't lie, She don't lie, She don't lie
That darn scale. Whether or not you log that cookie, the scale knows. I have gotten off track, logging from memory and estimating. My weight tends to hover around 2 lbs but trends downward. I don't think I have gained, but I stopped losing. When I got fat I wasn't weighing myself at all. Now I weigh frequently. It keeps me…

Is it just a bad time to try? (grief)
I need to lose weight. But, life is getting in the way. I have been doing okay at home, but when I go out I go back to old habits. That might be something I can work around. Just start making better choices. My dad is really ill. That isn't new, but hospice is coming today to do an assessment. I am driving up to visit him…

Do hunger pains go away?
I have trouble feeling full. I give myself time for it to register that I have eaten, but unless I overeat I don't feel full. I am trying to choose foods with protein. Yesterday I binged, I just couldn't feel full. Is it something you get used to or that goes away? Does anyone even know what I am talking about?

Spring kitchen scale
We do have a kitchen scale. It is like this one http://www.leeners.com/canning/store/kitchen-scale.shtml It is not digital doesn't tare. I know a digital one wouldn't be very expensive, but this is what I have for now. Is this good enough for what I need?

starting out
I have been inactive for a long time. I am starting to do a few at home exercises. I am not sure how often I should and how hard to push myself at the beginning. I know I am not doing much, but it is what I can for now. I started just walking 3 miles and I was tired and sweaty but I was okay Wed I did a few exercises at…

What is so wrong with guesstimating?
If I am estimating some amounts and still losing am I still doing it "wrong"? I never tried counting calories in the past, it seemed too complicated. I started using this app to get an idea of how many calories I was eating daily. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it is. I do measure some things, but shared meals, I…

Obese the word
I am obese. The first time I saw the word on a medical report it really hit me how much I had gained. I tried losing, failed and gained more and am finally going to get to a normal weight. I knew I was overweight, but I didn't realize how much until that moment.

Strength training at home, what do I need to start?
I searched YouTube and saw a few videos, not sure how good they were. They had at the least dumbells and a mat. What should I have to get started. I have wood and tile floors. I don't have any weights. I have towels and blankets, but not a mat. I am a beginner. I guess if I really like strength training I will look into…
