Dumb Q
What if any aesthetic changes could be expected if you ate at maintenance and worked out? (In my case it would be cardio and a limited number of higher-rep bodyweight exercises - am working around injuries). I feel like this used to be enough to look reasonably fit, or it did when I was in my early 20s, anyway.

Calories from cooking with oil
I just made amazing fried diner style burgers. I used a LOT of oil as per directions. I used 85% ground beef. The burgers released tons of fat into the pan (not all, obviously, but enough to increase the amount of liquid in there by like an inch). So, not all of the oil used to cook the burgers is going into my belly, and…

DOMS persisting on one side only - pull / strain?
it's been a day and a half since i challenged my legs, and a couple of weeks after i stepped up the overall amount of activity i've been doing - more daily workouts, mostly light nonimpact cardio, some bodyweight work, and a couple of sessions of hiit on a bike. the other day i tried high rep leg presses. (the lowest…

veg for lazy single people
What's the most time/energy-efficient way to get fresh veg in, if you're a single person? I'm fed up with washing veg/cutting/cooking & washing dishes. (FYI, I dislike frozen veg, and when I make double portions, e.g. of roasted or sauteed veg, about half of that winds up getting thrown out, because I'm not always home to…

Martial arts style conditioning
I can't actually do this kind of thing anymore, but just curious - what is going on with this kind of workout? Is it HIIT --> fat burning, or what? I ask because I was in the best shape of my life when I took kickboxing classes. No other activity has gotten me as lean or strong. I didn't eat any differently, either. We did…

VO2 max and heart rate
If I have an estimate of my VO2max (say from the calculator derived from the research discussed here), and I want to work at x% of that VO2max, can I use my heart rate as a proxy? How would I do that? edit: never mind, I found another calculator that converts bpm to VO2 max and vice versa:…

bummer
annoyed. i thought i could maybe do a kickbox video, making substitutions for jumping jacks etc. knee acting up anyway. i don't know why i can't get it through my head that i have to properly deal with my stupid knee (and other things), there's just no working around this stuff that's not going to aggravate things. only…

Calculating portion sizes for soups (given x ingredients)
Is there a quick way to work it out on paper? Like I want each portion to be 2 cups for this soup I'm making. In this soup are - 4 cups cabbage - 6 cups broth - 3 cups onions - a 28 oz can of diced tomatoes w water - 4 celery stalks, 1 small carrot, 1.5 cups green beans, 5 cloves garlic, 2 tblspns olive oil, 2 tblspns…

Total Immersion freestyle - how do you do the kick?
Haven't tried it yet - I've been watching the vids, and it seems simple in theory: you use your whole body like a kind of torpedo, placed kind of low in the water, and use your leading hand (hand 1) to cut the water, right? And as your other hand (2) nears the leading hand, you kind of pivot your torso, by whipping the leg…

If your fridge loses power for 12 hours, is the food inside safe?
I didn't get a chance to see what state it was in at the 12-hr point before the fridge/freezer started working again and things got back to whatever state they were in originally. Frozen things might have been partially unfrozen and refrozen.. obviously you don't eat things that were completely defrosted, but what can…

Pacing exercise - muscle soreness
I used to be able to work out daily. I've started up again, but this time I have arthritis and my hypermobility has become a burden. So getting back to fitness after time away, I'm scared of pushing myself too hard and setting myself up for another overuse injury (I've had a lot of issues with tendonitis and repetitive…

Post your most filling ~100 calorie snacks
Mine: - 1 soft-boiled egg - 1/2 cup asparagus - a tiny piece of whole wheat bread (0.25 of a small roll) Calories: 104 Carbs: 6 g Fat: 5 g Protein: 8 g Fiber: 1 g Iron: 14% DV I boil the water and chuck the asparagus and egg in at the same time; boil on high for 6 mins (on my stove). The soft yolk tastes like butter. A…

Have you taken turmeric and/or bromelain?
Did it help relieve pain and inflammation? If so, how long did that take? Hoping to get some relief for OA, tendonitis, and post-exercise soreness.

Things I forgot when I was maintaining / off the wagon
I'm watching my intake again, now that I'm dealing with regain after years of maintenance. Due to injuries and arthritis, I can't burn off cals through exercise the way I did before. When I could just burn those extra calories that would let me have full-fat cheese or a nice piece of crusty white bread, it didn't matter,…

Swimming - shower at pool or at home? Which do you do and why?
Option 1: just dry off, put your wet hair in a pony tail to freeze on your way home, put on the clothes you came in with, feel gross about that, get home, take that stuff off, shower properly there Option 2: quick shower at the gym, uncertainty about residual chlorine in crevices (especially if showers are open), no shower…

What's a good resource with handy rules of thumb for nutrition?
USDA has this http://www.choosemyplate.gov/food-groups/vegetables.html They've got these groups - Dark Green Vegetables - Starchy Veg - Beans and peas - "Other vegetables" - here, it's a mish-mash of cruciferous veg, mushrooms, onions... I'd like to have an easy way of think about hitting micro and macronutrient targets,…

Can you eat cooked clams the next day?
By the way this spaghetti alle vongole is delicious, and so fast. Don't omit the lemon zest if you try it, it adds a lovely brightness. I had it with asparagus.

Working out after a blowout

Best use of exercise time for fat loss? can't lift :/
Female, 38, bmi of 22, high body fat % (visual comparison, but it's up there - I've gone up and and down within a 74lb range. I recently regained weight due to inactivity after injury, after maintaining at 124 lbs for several years. I'm sure I've lost a lot of lean mass and have gained a lot of fat. Goal: lose fat, at…

Substitute for chorizo and other dried/cured meats?
I love chorizo because I cook for one and am convenience-minded - it keeps for AGES, no freezing or prep required. It's an easy way to add meaty flavour to stove-top dishes like pasta, omelettes, legumes, or as a tasty ingredient in dishes like this mind-meltingly good chicken and chorizo thing. Are there less fatty…

Wrapping your head around "net" calories
I previously used another site. I remember logging both intake and exercise (estimated, no FitBit or whatever, don't plan on getting one). I don't remember the 'net' number looming so large on that other site, and this is preferable to MFP's way imo - focusing just the gross number made intake feel somehow easier to…

Slight lower back pain - ok to walk on treadmill?
I picked up a suitcase two weeks ago and woke up an old pain (that I got while doing a similar movement). I can't remember what the original problem was, pulled muscle or what, but my instructions at that time were to rest and take OTC painkillers until it stopped hurting (so pulled muscle, probably). It hurts much less…

Cooking for one on a budget with minimal hassle
I've lost a good amount of weight - and after years of maintenance, regained a bit. Last time I lost, other than portion control, I mostly ate the way I've always eaten - whatever food I felt like that day, cooked (or bought) that day, and some gone to waste. No attention paid to cost, and at least half my meals eaten out.…

How far can I get with 80s style fitness?
I am working around a number of orthopedic issues. I've recovered from the ones I can recover from, and am eager to get back into shape and optimize function, but I have to work within limits (under medical orders). I'm not willing to risk further injury - I want to be able to continue to engage with fitness in 20 or 30…

calorie targets after regain
I lost 50 pounds four years ago, and easily maintained up until a year ago, when health conditions set me back. I regained 17 pounds and would like to lose them. I am female, 38, 5'7, currently 145 lbs. I can't work out as long or intensely as I did a year ago, and I'm hungrier (I think the reduced activity contributes to…
