I'm going to start lifting weights, but I'm curious... What's the big difference between free weights & machines? Does one do a better job than the other?

so im looking into the jawbone up and the fitbit for tracking exercise, not so much food, i do that on mfp... i like the look of the up, the sleep tracking and that it's water-resistant... i don't know too much about the fitbit any opinions?
